THIS ISN'T GENESIS, RAY WILSON IS A FAT FAGGOT WITH A SHITTY VOICE, I WANT MY WATERED DOWN ARENA CROSSOVER POP BACK, GIVE ME PHIL'S NASALY ANNOYING VOICE BACK.
DOWN WITH ART, UP WITH THE SAME SHIT OVER AND OVER! POWER TO THE REAL GENESIS FANS!
It is not Genesis, but it honors Genesis great composition with a good interpretation. I prefer a million times these kinds of interpretation than those interpretations that move songs to reggie or other weird styles.
The point was that people complained as much about Phil singing Gabriel era songs as they are Ray. Given your age you didn't see the original Genesis or the subsequent 70s configurations nor did you experience the backlash against Phil. I did. People bitched incessantly about Phil with many calling for Genesis to disband simply because PG left. Now - its just accepted that Phil sings the songs. Ray came along and it was ,as they say, "deja-vu all over again". The guy never stood a chance.
People used to say the same things about Phil singing this song as people here are saying about Ray. "Oh who is he fooling ? He's just the drummer and he thinks he can do better Peter"... Blah, blah, blah. I'm betting that many of the Gabriel fanatics here weren't even born when that configuration of Genesis existed and maybe even the Collins 70s era.
@bowiemott at least Phil Collins was involved in some way to the creation of this song even though he wasn't yet the singer. Ray wasn't involved at all. Hence, Phil has more right to sing this than Ray Wilson does. Enough said.
@TornadoOf07 Because Phil Collins drummed on the album he has more of a "right" to sing the song than the Genesis singer in 1998? That doesn't make a damn bit of sense. Following that convoluted "logic," Tony Banks has more of a "right" to sing a song from Trespass than Phil. And Chester Thompson has no right to drum on any of the songs. Give me a break!
I cant understand you - personality culters.... Ray Wilson has a good voice and he sings this song with good technique and with expression. So what's your problem? Does only Mozart play Mozart like Mozart? How poor. Music is Music and this is a good piece, no matter who plays or sings it, as long they are capable of.
I think he captures the spirit of the piece quite well ...
And this from someone who idolized Gabriel (Still do), and saw Genesis WITH Gabriel twice (Selling England By The Pound at Santa Monica Civic - LLDOBW at the Shrine) ....
What IS missing ? .... The theatrics that made Gabriel so extraordinary ...
Still .... Not bad at all .... Hell - I think Tony Banks screwed up more than the singer did ... Banks kinda blew the intro ...
Lol i dont mind who sings lol as long as they aint super bad tbh im into the music Ray wilson is ok he aint the best but it beats no one singing if you ask me Looks like a cock though at 1:00 with his weird headbanging lol
I was surprised, he did a pretty good job. He didn't try to be anyone but himself. I can respect that. Big shoes for sure. It does sound like a cover band though.
Kinda like a dramatic reading of the material ... bass and drums were good, keys a bit flubbed, rhythm guitar negligible, vocals okay but a bit bland and looks like a drama school student ... oh well ... Genesis as a cover band of itself ... probably did it as a result of fans screaming to hear the Lamb one more time. No props or costumes makes it a bit dull. Oh well folks, the old days are gone, so its either this or sitting at home listening to your archives. Sigh.
This is tortuous; albeit on slightly less so than Phil Collins' rendition. Wilson has no idea what he's singing about. Peter Gabriel lived the song.
In truth, Ray Wilson should never have been allowed to join Genesis; it was an act of desperation on Tony Banks' part - as was Genesis' final album, which was truly pitiful.
this isn't genesis..this a very disgruntled banks, and rutherford trying to capture the magic of 70's genesis, with terrible results...this guy clearly can't sing..he can't even do it in the original key as gabriel and collins did...they have some serious balls to perform this without the other 2...collins and gabriel must have had a good laugh with this line-up ! even the crowd didn't seem to impressed with the lack of enthusiasm in their clapping ..simply terrible !
wtf just because he doesn't sound like pete or phil doesn't mean he can't sing.....i mean i can understand not liking this version but dont be stupid.
@phishpeaks Sorry dude, this is Genesis. I've seen The Musical Box and they did a far better job than this. Even Banks' keyboard work on the intro was rather sloppy.

By the way, this is the 35th Anniversary of the incredible album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, which was released on November 18, 1974.
He just...doesn't have the voice to cover Gabriel's work...or Collin's for that matter...it isn't easy to cover either, but his performance just disappoints time after time :[
good solid version. I'm just glad that with Phil Collins gone, Genesis were able to perform their original classics in much longer form than silly "Old Medleys"..
sorry, but this ain´t Genesis...the song is one of Genesis but the rest is just as cheap as ray wilsons voice, who was the worst choice for a new vocalist

FADING LIGHTS ... please...!
@Hunne2303 i'm not being "stupid" as you said ,as you eloquently put it..i'm stating a fact..yes, he may be able to slightly carry the tune, but this isn't genesis..this is just rutherford and banks disgruntled at the fact that collins left to continue other projects, and nothing more..he's not a good replacement and doesn't have the emotion and character that gabriel or collins had..an even better replacement would've definitely been Fish from Marillion.if anyone could do the job, it' him !!
@Hunne2303 How could he sing it like Gabriel? it's not right from the soul like Gabriel's and we can't put PHil Collins down, He and Gabriel, made a pefect duet in vocals! Their voices also looked very much one to the other! perfect "match"!"Sellinhg England By the pound", and "the lamb..." are always insisside me talking....to my heart! thn x Genesis!
@Hunne2303 I respectfully disagree. The members of Genesis hired him as their vocalist, and he did the best job he could. No, it's not even CLOSE to Gabriel-era Genesis, but he (Ray) had something to offer.
I don't mind Tony and Mike wanting to continue Genesis with a different vocalist. Genesis is an evolving musical project. My gripe was that they (T & M) were shocked when CAS tanked. Of course it did! Phil was not on board. They should have kept Ray for a second album, a sort of "concept album"--what if Peter never left Genesis in '75 but was still a member in '97? It would not sound like a Phil Collins-led album at all...but so what? Ray's voice led to possibilities T & M never examined.
I live in NYC, and strange enough: I hate musicals (not my thing), but I wonder, Why anybody have thought OF making a musical show based on this album? They alredy did Quadrophenia... If not a musical maybe a Rock Opera (is it the same?)
You're so right, I'm sitting here listening while doing something else, not two lines into the song, I said, OUT LOUD TO MYSELF "What the h@** is this?" I never looked twice at it when I chose it to play.
Ray Wilson was a great choice to do Lead Vocals for Genesis, Shame,CAS was more Mike & Mechanics than actual Genesis, Everybody blames Ray for Genesis failure. I blame Genesis Management for going to Poland & booking Stadiums. Not Smart with a new singer, who's main Fan Base is in the USA. Greed was their downfall on this outing folks.

To be fair, the kid's not done a bad version and he's got a decent voice but, to coin a phrase, i know what i like and i like what i know, its not the genesis we all know and love, it's just not rael(sic) genesis is it?
"Worst version the the entrance I've heard since Larry Fast was butchering it on the second PG tour in 1980."
it might surprise (and delight) you to learn that the keyboarist who played the into to Lamb in Pete's band was one Timmy Capello (yes the Sax player from Tina Turner's band and the Lost Boys)
This is terrible. It's in a lower key, Tony's playing is a bit off. And what are some of you smoking? Ray's version is better than Phil's? Not even close. What made Phil's position unique as the new singer is how SIMILAR the timbre and frequencys were to his voice. This is just lame, period, done, fertig, fine', over. So please, get your heads out of your arsch.
That was Timmy Capello in 78. And as hyper as that was, I saw that tour and it was a faster version of the lamb, but it blows this lame ass version out of the water.
Ray is the second best on this after Pete, never liked Phil on the old ones, his voice is too thin. Would love to here more oldies with Ray on vocals. Anyone know if they did any others?
I'm not gonna comment on weither this is Genesis. ;)
What a shame. If you want to put together a "tribute" show, go ahead. But bill it as such. THIS IS NOT GENESIS! And neither is "Then There Were Three". Without Steve and Peter, it's John, Paul, George and Lester.
Sorry, Ray Wilson fans, I'm going to have to agree with this one. The Musical Box plays it far better, yes. And the fact that I believe they play it in the song's original key, unlike Genesis is doing here. He also sounds nothing like Peter Gabriel, unlike Phil Collins, who sounded a tad like Peter.
this has to be the worst singer EVER. its a shame to see him side to side with mike and tony. the drummer sucks and I can´t even notice if there´s abassplayer. Mike, Tony: They´ve written some of the best songs in rock history; then, they choose this monkey. Nobody´s perfect!
DrowningInDejaVu....LMAO!!!!!!! No offense to this guy, but there's no way he can fill in for Peter or Phil. It sounds like some cheezey American Idol show.
Impressive cover, well done who ever he is. A good grip on the better of Peter than most other cover singers I've ever heard. Who is this? Excellent cover on the music, very tight band.
It IS Genesis, with Ray Wilson as lead singer. He joined for the "Calling All Stations" CD and tour. Didn't go ever with fans I guess. I rather liked the CD AND his voice.
It's GENESIS! That's no cover! When Phil left the band in 1996, they replaced him with Ray Wilson (singer of this clip), recorded one album (Calling All Stations, 1997), and toured Europe in 1998. They disbanded shortly after that...and now Phil's back! For what it's worth, I think Ray did an excellent job with the older material.
Honestly, I think he is a Gabriel fan, so I think he just gets nervous, big shoes to feel. I think he's a good singer, and has qualities of both Collins and Gabriel, as well as his own touch. I just don't think it worked for genesis. But honestly, I'm fine with him. (Maybe not in this performance though.)
Genesis has been my no 1 band for 35 years, and I love all this stuff from Gabriel era, but this singer doesn't sound bad! To me, he is more 'into it' than Peter himself in the video from kake2005ip. He sounds terrible there! I think that Genesis should've stopped making music after Wind & Wuthering.
this kinda sucks. genesis sucks in this one. tony fucks up on the intro. mike sounds ok. the lead vocal guy isnt that great and the show lacks phil presence. its not as entertaining. this one try, but genesis should have stoped when phil left. and come back this year with mike, phil and tony! its cool that genesis are back at least for one more tour with the right memebers!
I love the way Ray does this song. Who cares if it's not exactly the way Peter or Phil would have sung it. If I wanted to hear a note for note rendition of the original, I'd just listen to the studio version.
Man...I wanted to have sympathy for Ray Wilson, but he just can't do this well. I mean he certainly tries, but his accents are all wrong: stresses when he shouldn't, etc.
To this day, I'm still really surprised Mike and Tony even bothered doing this. This is nothing but a horrible memory for true Genesis fans. What a joke.

PeterMayer 4 years ago
He sounds uncannily like Gabriel in some parts :O
AlbaSaab 4 years ago
Agreed!
renoo27 4 years ago
There was only one Genesis: Gabriel, Banks, Rutherford, Hackett and Collins.
JMRBAQ 4 years ago
Geez, no Peter, no Steve, no Phil. I always thought at least Chester and Darryl were involved. No wonder this tour stiffed.
I don't have any problem with Ray's singing but as someone else said, this isn't Genesis.
guitardude57 4 years ago
To all those arguing about who's better who's best - strikes me the people there were having a good time.
Elvisasmoose 4 years ago
the only origional members here are tony banks and mike ruthaferd
Broderick85 4 years ago 2
What a shame. If you want to put together a "tribute" show, go ahead. But bill it as such. THIS IS NOT GENESIS! And neither is "Then There Were Three". Without Steve and Peter, it's John, Paul, George and Lester.

oh my god judges were found.. please dont make me laugh!!! what you can do is only written those absoulte rubbish in messagebox. I'm impressed.
caven87 4 years ago
the musical box plays it better, and haha tony banks fucked up a bit
FloydNIN 4 years ago
Sorry, Ray Wilson fans, I'm going to have to agree with this one. The Musical Box plays it far better, yes. And the fact that I believe they play it in the song's original key, unlike Genesis is doing here. He also sounds nothing like Peter Gabriel, unlike Phil Collins, who sounded a tad like Peter.
tenchimasake 4 years ago
Agreed! I'd rather go see "The Musical Box" than watch this scheiss.

Which other mouth openers went frequented the auditions for this Genesis-incarnation? David Coverdale? Bryan Adams? Limahl? One can only guess.......
helmuthb 4 years ago
Why? Why?
WHY?????
And people say that Phil Collins is bad. :| Oh well, I'm glad Ray Wilson left.
tenchimasake 4 years ago
He didn't leave... they just decided to stop.

Phil never sang it as well as Ray F-ing Wilson? Some people really don't have taste....
PeterMayer 4 years ago
This is terrible. A different key, Ray Wilson is boring as fuck. Wake up people.

WTF was that,a cover band with 2 Genesis members???

so shameful that this sound so boring!!!! it doesnot sound like genesis at all.
darksideof1 4 years ago 2
this has to be the worst singer EVER. its a shame to see him side to side with mike and tony. the drummer sucks and I can´t even notice if there´s abassplayer. Mike, Tony: They´ve written some of the best songs in rock history; then, they choose this monkey. Nobody´s perfect!
monshiux 4 years ago
Ray Wilson..was perfect in this song...And is so sad..to leave up from Genesis..He did a Great Job!!!!!!!

Finally someone who liked it too. :)

I want my money back and I didn't even go to the show.
DrowningInDejaVu 4 years ago 3
DrowningInDejaVu....LMAO!!!!!!! No offense to this guy, but there's no way he can fill in for Peter or Phil. It sounds like some cheezey American Idol show.

Is that Aston Kutcher????
artgonewrong 4 years ago
He does a good job. But Peter and Phil just fit better.
hogweed1975 4 years ago
This sounds like an awful cover version on one of those music reality shows.
Rutherford and Banks couldn't recruit a better singer than this guy?
Diostillrocks 4 years ago 2
Phil better???? I frikin guess so! This is awful.
drj602 4 years ago 2
I don't like this singer, Phill is better
karejimenez 4 years ago 2
I prefered them in the 70s during their progressive era. LONG LIVE TO GENESIS!!!
Whosnext04 4 years ago 2
Impressive cover, well done who ever he is. A good grip on the better of Peter than most other cover singers I've ever heard. Who is this? Excellent cover on the music, very tight band.
Thanks
ilmlin 4 years ago
It IS Genesis, with Ray Wilson as lead singer. He joined for the "Calling All Stations" CD and tour. Didn't go ever with fans I guess. I rather liked the CD AND his voice.
TEKNOSAPIENDuran 4 years ago
It's GENESIS! That's no cover! When Phil left the band in 1996, they replaced him with Ray Wilson (singer of this clip), recorded one album (Calling All Stations, 1997), and toured Europe in 1998. They disbanded shortly after that...and now Phil's back! For what it's worth, I think Ray did an excellent job with the older material.
Drew1701E 4 years ago
Well put!! :D At least SOMEONE knows what they're talking about.
renoo27 4 years ago
Honestly, I think he is a Gabriel fan, so I think he just gets nervous, big shoes to feel. I think he's a good singer, and has qualities of both Collins and Gabriel, as well as his own touch. I just don't think it worked for genesis. But honestly, I'm fine with him. (Maybe not in this performance though.)
JohnyVirgil 4 years ago
I agree, he sucks! Every nuance, all feeling is lost!
VladtheEmailer 4 years ago
He's got something called "attitude" that doesn't fit the Gabriel's profile.
jadben 4 years ago
Being a huge Genesis fan, I expected to hate this singer but he has an excellent voice and captures Gabriel's vocal feel and grittiness. Well done.
ehs3000 4 years ago
What's matter?? Ray Wilson is a great singer..and your talent is very real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SPECTRE1961 4 years ago
who is this fag? No one can do this except Peter. End of story.
vantagestudios 4 years ago
Genesis has been my no 1 band for 35 years, and I love all this stuff from Gabriel era, but this singer doesn't sound bad! To me, he is more 'into it' than Peter himself in the video from kake2005ip. He sounds terrible there! I think that Genesis should've stopped making music after Wind & Wuthering.
PrZemek44 4 years ago 2
I totally agree!
massimotube 4 years ago
Good performance. However, no Peter Gabriel, no Phil Collins, then it just sounds like a cover version.
rviryanthara 4 years ago
Very good! I didn't think I'd like this, but I do, a nice version.
halosoul 4 years ago
this kinda sucks. genesis sucks in this one. tony fucks up on the intro. mike sounds ok. the lead vocal guy isnt that great and the show lacks phil presence. its not as entertaining. this one try, but genesis should have stoped when phil left. and come back this year with mike, phil and tony! its cool that genesis are back at least for one more tour with the right memebers!
valliseasons1 5 years ago
fucks up twice...
blindwombat 4 years ago
I love the way Ray does this song. Who cares if it's not exactly the way Peter or Phil would have sung it. If I wanted to hear a note for note rendition of the original, I'd just listen to the studio version.
DoubleDutchCourage 5 years ago
Man...I wanted to have sympathy for Ray Wilson, but he just can't do this well. I mean he certainly tries, but his accents are all wrong: stresses when he shouldn't, etc.
puroresu2 5 years ago
I don't believe it! Tony Banks cocks up the intro!
