I once went to Tower Records and bought an LP of Ludovic Spiess singing tenor arias. Much to my dismay the record inside the cover was some jazz record by Woody Herman - not my thing.
Spiess came to San Francisco for Turandot. There was a lot of publicity. He was very good. The voice flashed out over the orchestra. Calaf was his role. The next year he returned as Cavaradossi alternating with Domingo.
This comparison alas revealed his status. He was very good but no Domingo.
Herlea lost out to Merrill in New York. Less justice I would say. Merrill eventually lost out to Milnes. Herlea was better, IMHO.

If you feel a sudden shock don't worry its only Verdi spinning in his grave because this performance sucks badly. Neither singer has the Verdi style or sound and the tenor is either seriously over-parted or in serious vocal decline. Textbook definition of tonal unsteadiness.
yeah, you're are a useless gay tenor for those comments. Dumbass. Herlea is recognized as one of the greatest Verdi baritones ever. He sang Rigoletto for over 30 years. Most baritones could sing that role for maybe 5 years. Speiss did wreck his voice eventually, but this is just the way he sounded. Let's hear you do better..... ? Do your research

Great Verdi baritones Warren,Milnes,MacNeil, Merrill, DeLuca, Ruffo, etc. And I'm not useless sweetie my boyfriend loves me and I'm out and proud and cheap shots won't hurt me. Reference to Herlea's greatness please.

sa-i respectam si sa-i iubim asa cum au fost si sa ne madrim cu faptul ca ne-au fost contemporani. am avut mult de invatat de la fiecare din ei si trebuie sa le multumim pentru asta. cu admiratie!
dragul meu, artistii autentici SUNT nemuritori, de vreme ce vorbim acum si aici despre ei si ii ascultam; problema este CUM ii iubim si ii respectam, ce pensii au, cum traiesc, "care e viata lor" acum... din cate stiu Romania nu are o "casa Verdi" in care o Sara Scuderi (81 ani) sa-l injunghie pe Scarpia (76 ani) si dupa aia sa-si vada de viata ei cotidiana decenta, simpla, umana, demna....
Este extraordinar sa ai sansa sa poti asculta asemenea voci...O combinatie superba intre un tenor spint de o calitate incontestabila si un bariton de inalta tinuta.
Nu te stresa, stiu si de Spiess, si de Buzea, si de Piso, si de Moldoveanu, Zobian, Finateanu, Stavru, Teodorian, Dacian ,Georgescu, Teodorescu (ca sa iau si citiva de opereta...) SI multi altii. Nu imi place Spiess, nu cred ca e cazul sa imi comenteze cineva gusturile. Cred ca stiu citeva nume de care matalutza nu ai nici cea mai vaga idee. Dar te trezesti vorbind...
Buzea a fost un liric bun, la fel si Piso, erau si rude, Moldoveanu poate fi ascultat si evaluat pe youtube, Stavru un tenor dramatic marcant si un colectionar de muzica de opera impatimit, Teodorian o voce lirica lejera, cu ceva coloratura, si un compozitor in acelasi timp.

Excelente dúo de cantantes, pero me gusta más el barítono, es más Verdiano,
más brillante y metálico.
