But as 'bishop of rome' the pope actually has very little to do with Rome itself. The 'Holy See' is not a diocese; it refers to a person & its function in office.
Actually the cathedral of the bishop of Rome is the Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is outside the Vatican. It has some interesting features.....
