Johnny Cash placed a full page ad in the Nashville Trade Magazine when he realized that Rosanne didn't know he had written the song until after she recorded it. Read her memoir, it's really cool but she writes a tiny bit stuffy. I like Rodney's book writing style better but they are both excellent authors as well as song writers. Check it out through Amazon. Music for your ears and books for your mind.
The story I heard right after she first recorded this was that she did not know that it had been recorded by Johnny. Really shook her up to listen to his recording and then hers. Don't know the truth of it, though.
You said; "She is doing it in the key of A. "Actually she is singing it in the key of B the guitar solo effectively switching to key of E. (The capo at second fret might have confused you) I do it in the key of G switching to C for guitar solo.

Roseanne WROTE this song about her dad. John recorded it. It is not a "Johnny Cash Song" It is a Roseanne Cash song about Johnny. Just to set the record straight.
For those who might not know...Stueart Smith is a terrific guitarist and a whole lot more than you can see in this short video...just pull up the Eagles and check out who's right there with Joe Walsh on the solo at the end of Hotel California. I've seen them three times and he is fabulous.
One of my very favorite recordings. Roseanne is highly underrated and a great singer, and Steuart Smith is one of the top handful of Nashville pickers.
I heard this on the radio just yesterday and turned it up for his solos as I wondered what kind of guitar it might be. I guessed a mahogany Martin or Gibson and lo and behold, that's a Gibson J-50 on the video (with mahogany back and sides).
That doesn't mean that's what Smith played on the record, of course, but it sounds the same.
Nice to hear this smooth voice again and again,,,hope to hear it live one day in Germany...rgds from here and merry xmas

She is doing it in the key of A. Johnny did it in the key of D. Put capo on the second fret and then play in C chord.

@fabfrith So Rosanne wrote the song before she was six years old? She was born in 1955, the song was released in 1961. I don't think so!

There's a sweetness to Gibson acoustics that you just don't seem to find in Martins or other makes.
