Unfortunately, sonar is playing havoc with whales. Increases in sonar activity is linked to whales not being able to find each other or a mate, and can disorient them which can result in them beaching themselves.

if you like SONAR but without the ping, you need pasive sonar, active sonar is the one where you get the ping. Today the ping still exists but on vanguard class subs (served on one) you get the less creepy one. I will admit it is creepey especially when you picture yourself silent in the deep of the atlantic, and out of the dark the bow of a huge submarine approaches, the sonar in the background!

Playing Silent hunter makes you scared of this sound, just fired torpedo's on a fleet of merchents, you dive and tries to escape, but destroyers know where to look. During a complete stop or silent running they start scanning the waters and searching for you...

These SONARS ping at the frequency where you have the most sensitive hearing so it maximizes pain. Most people think that dogs have more sensitive hearing than people. It isn't true. Dogs can hear frequencies that people can't hear, but humans have the most sensitive hearing of all the animals at their best frequencies (which are the same as the SONAR).
