Actually, just read the Q'uran itself and then the archeology regarding actual dating of the passages since it isn't in order. Mohammed was tolerant until he acquired Medina and then ~boom~ no more compromising. After that it was unending war against kaffirs, with newer verses superceding the more moderate passages. That is the problem. The 7th century has no place in the 21st. Follow the 'tolerant prophet' if you must.
