Personally, I'm an audiophile....if I buy an MP3 player, it will be to listen to my music with the highest of quality and richness. Looking at this list by CNET made me laugh. @FRr3AkOnALEaSh Go with COWON... trust me, I did my research for weeks years ago when I first bought my Cowon D2 (which is now obsolete but still in great working condition). The newer Cowon mp3 players are more advanced now... my old Cowon still blows away the crummy iPOD. Cowon MP3s are very customizable in sound quality and long battery life. I would recommend the Cowon J3 right now.... if anything happens to my D2, the J3 will be my target buy for sure.

@AdamSavage88 thats funny i've had my first gen ipod touch since it came out and it still works great and is surprisingly fast, its really not very big, my itunes never crashes on my thinkpad, also i dropped it in water and nothing is wrong with it so its very durable, clearly you have never owned an ipod (oh and it's 200 dollars just like your zune hd) And good luck playing with your 5 different apps, because it doesn't make you cool just because you dont buy apple products.

Zunes also offer very good sound quality, and their UI can't be beat. Despite all the Zune bashing, they're great devices!
iPods have that "cool" factor, pretty nice hardware and a good UI. However, they do rank pretty low in the sound quality department, but if you're not an audiophile, a decent choice.
Of course, headphones are MUCH more important for SQ.

Better service, faster, still has apps (though i dont really use them), HD radio, and it is cheaper for 16 gig. Its worth the money and it will last. The price for 40gb (8gb player AND 32 card) mp3 player with GREAT sound quality, and convenient non-bulky clip feature is only about $95 dollars. Sansa wins. If you want the best phone on the planet mixed in with the best MP3 player on the planet then go with the iPhone 4S. I'm getting that on 28th October when it comes out in my country. I have the iPod Touch 3 and got so much use out of it. The iPod Touch 4 is out now and would recommend the 32GB or 64GB versions.

Creative Zens have great sound quality compared to iPods. i have an iPod touch now since my Creative Zen Vision M got stolen, i thought iPod was better than my Zen but some of the detail of a song is missing in iPod which is present in Zen. I recommend Creative Zen over iPod based on sound quality and player's life.

For people who go to the gym, anything bigger than a Sansa Clip or iPod Shuffle is out of the question. @kooldaug As far as I know, the Creative Zen Stone Plus is a great product when working out in the gym. It has a display that is similar with that of the Sansa Clip, a lower pricetag than the Shuffle and the solid quality of the Creative brand.

Are you freakin kidding me? Wow, this list lost all validity once they annouced the I touch as the winner. Sure it may look shiny with dusted light coating of tech-sexy, but in what universe does that have anyhting to do with the music experience itself? Ipod touch only wins because of it's excessive additonal accessories, so I guess in that sense it's a valid victory. Real music enthusiast don't buy sonically inferior Ipod touchs.

@halofan676 iPod Touch is a definite. It's just as good if not better than a phone. If you want the best phone on the planet mixed in with the best MP3 player on the planet then go with the iPhone 4S. I'm getting that on 28th October when it comes out in my country. I have the iPod Touch 3 and got so much use out of it. The iPod Touch 4 is out now and would recommend the 32GB or 64GB versions.

They like to think they are predicting the future, but they're a joke. The mp3 player began with the Walkman in the form of cassette tape players and NEVER became obsolete. People will always want a mobile music platform. Not everyone wants to bog their phone down with music/apps/movies/net/etc...

I don't understand the idea that if you care about music you would NOT care about quality... Can you elaborate on that idea? I would think the idea would be that if you care about music, you wouldn't care about a device having cameras and internet access. In any case it's all personal. I like being able to watch a movie while waiting ( say... the DMV).

Creative Zens have great sound quality compared to iPods. i have an iPod touch now since my Creative Zen Vision M got stolen, i thought iPod was better than my Zen but some of the detail of a song is missing in iPod which is present in Zen. I recommend Creative Zen over iPod based on sound quality and player's life.

@kooldaug As far as I know, the Creative Zen Stone Plus is a great product when working out in the gym. It has a display that is similar with that of the Sansa Clip, a lower pricetag than the Shuffle and the solid quality of the Creative brand.

@Elsoddo i agree 100%, its sound quality, storage, battery life, and size are that all counts. Everything else is extra and doesn't add the MP3 ELEMENTS. Sure it makes it fun to play with and counts towards how much you will be entertained with stuff OTHER than mainly music, but it still doesn't add to the "HOW CAN I IMPROVE PLAYING MUSIC ON THIS THING" Category -_-

It's not a review of the best MP3 players. It's a review of the best gadgets. You can't put an iPod number 1 in this category. There's no doubting the iPod's greatness but compared to other MP3! players on the market it's way down the list. It's got relatively poor sound quality and poor battery life.
