  • Language is overrated.

  • They could even teach dogs most of those things (if it werent for their less developed "arms").

So how can this be suprising to anyone about the animal most closely related to humans...?

  • uh... MORE PLEASE

  • Hmmmm..... Chimps cant be trained to dive under water? But yet some macaques ( monkey) do swim and hold their breath under water, I have even seen an orangutan that does the same.

  • I wish they would open their own restaurant and make some money.

  • Is this presentation accessible somewhere on the net? I'd like to wath it whole in one piece!

  • What they didn't show that is incredibly impressive is the abnormal command experiments they did with Kanzi. They gave him a set of instructions that required irregular manipulation of objects (e.g. "Put this door key in a refrigerator"), and he was able to follow the commands.

  • Dr. Zaius?

  • Does anybody know the name of the lecturer?

  • In the video, it states the name Jeffrey Elman fro UCSD.

  • The reason that Kanzi (a boy) does not get carried away thinking is because he does not identify with thought as humans do. Humans have taken thought to be themselves. A Bonobo or an Orangutan would never let it get that far.

  • @WolfeyCovet Thought to be themselves... I have to understand what you are saying. I do know that the higher apes are the only species to know that they are looking at themselves in the mirror.

  • dolphins have that ability too.

  • LOL it's probarly because he is afraid that Kanzi would attract his wife with his amazing cooking skills! ;)

  • I have seen a video in biology lessons wehre Kanzi has shown more of her abilitys then just cook i think the speaker in this video unerestimates Kanzi very much

  • Are you kidding me? A human in Hungary or Iran (Farsi) is much much different than a bonobo (hello...a GREAT APE).

  • @UrbaneGent Hungarians are subhuman barbarians

  • unbelivable

  • you 2 are showing your IQ

  • bonobos for the most part are not agressive like chimps..and we are so shocked the chimp attacked someone....humans have done the same and do things like that on a daily basis..thing is you can read a human better then a chimp

  • haha do you live in a box...we're capable of the same..have you seen some of the damage "unarmed" people have done to others..murders,rapes..alot of these are done with bare hands...belive me humans can cause just as much damage to someone as an "animal" if they want..considering we're higher animals...thinking,feeling,comunicating,given a soul..but still eseentially an animal..we fight over mates, terratory,we're agressive,we will kill of competition and kill for our food

  • haha wtf dont u think i know that, what im saying is 'unarmed' they are much stronger than us, and could rip you to pieces

  • We are all animals.

  • @Stonewallboy yeah, that's true ;-) so silly humans should be 'above' the other animals, many animals are intelligent, like for example dolphins as well...

  • Hey Kanzi is smarter than you buddie..

  • @Everly1388

I watched a documentry in the uk on bbc tv, and a group of bonobos tracked another group then killed them all males females and young ones .

  • @derek6678421 Hi Derek, you must be mistaken - unless there's some hidden footage from the bbc, you are referring to a group of chimpanzees at Gombe. If not, please cite where you got your information from. Thanks.

  • i agree its only a matter of time

  • @SimplyTheVest Actually Kanzi is well into his golden years and has never attacked a single human being, which is a good thing. He, like his cousin chimps, is pure muscle. Kanzi liked to be "tickled" by his trainers, but in his case, tickling required his trainers to take hard objects and dig them into his joints, something that would cause us all incredible pain. Bonobos are incredibly peaceful though, which is why they are quickly replacing chimps in research settings.

  • @bryneyk since you are familiar with this situation, can you please please tell me why all of TGAT's bonobos are so grossly overweight? Bonobos in the wild, into the golden years (as you call it) are very thin. It's disgusting to see Kanzi and everyone so fat. Which makes me wonder if they feed them all heavy sugary snacks as a reward for doing well.

  • @UrbaneGent I agree with what you say big time, In all the documentaries I saw when the chimps are in the wild they are good physical shape. Then when I see these chimps in captivity like sanctuaries and ZOOS they're overweight like a human. I believe it's because of high sugar snacks, hell I seen a video of chimps having b-day parties thrown for them at sacremento zoo, I think that's stupid and I don't agree with breeding the chimps being allowed in zoos.

  • @Frankwolf100 As for separating males from females, I don't think the zoos have a choice, there's no space for females to "escape" or roam from the males as they would in the wild, so maybe separating is a form of that. The males also have no space to run around and "vent" their displays. Chimps don't belong in zoos, personally....

  • @UrbaneGent I meant to say I don't agree with breeding chimps in zoos, not cause I don't wanna see them breed, I just don't like how they are so humanized in zoos. I even saw some zoos separate males when they become too agressive and start fighting for leadership, that's what they do in the wild and it's seen as a bad thing in zoos.

  • @Frankwolf100 you are absolutely correct. Having studied great ape behaviour and visited Gombe, African & US sanctuaries - I'm just sad as to the current state of things in general. Not only for chimps, but all the great apes. The zoos need to sell tickets and to do that the chimps have to interact with the visitors (look at all the youtubes). The sanctuaries "try" to de-humanize them...I don't know.

  • kanzi can you turn off the water please? so cute!

  • You guys need to work on your search skills. It took me 2 min:

search Youtube for title "Grey Matters: Understanding Language"

The segment here occurs at ~7min in.

    Respekt.

  • Could anyone please point me to the full video of this conference? Or some clues so that i may search for it myself. Any info highly appreciated

  • I'd love to watch the entire presentation as well. If you find it, please let me know about it. I'll do the same. Thanks!
