Art of Noise was a visionary group from Britain who had a lot of imagination and great talent. This 1984 single is still holding strong after 26 years.
I read where those guys didn't like the video, cuz it made them out like background afterthoughts to the little punk girl lol. But its a cool song. Very weird, but cool.

Classic! Art Of Noise - 'Close To The Edit'...so important to me mid 80's! Wonder where that girl is now? Trevor Horn spent some time in Yes, and of course a classic Yes album (prior to his stint) was 'Close To The Edge', and I wonder if this was meant to be some kind of homage? This is alongside Tack>Head and other great things then. Brilliant!
As far as the little girl is concerned, she has no skin showing, no heels, and she is not doing anything sexual (unless watching a little kid, dressed as a punk, ordering older guys around to break things gets u off) She is just an actress in a costume with makeup.
@lawilson1980 I agree, I don't think they're sexualizing the litte girl at all, she's just playing an interesting character in a hilariously weird 80's video! I don't see anything wrong here.
I have been told the little girl did everything backwards and then they played it forwards. Thats why it looks jerky. Great vid, very well done the girl.
As a child of the 80s, I remember seeing this vid for the first time...they didn't show it much on MTV, as far as I recall...but when I did see it, my whole age 11 years old outlook on life changed! I was both creeped out and thrilled by the whole thing....I think it still stands up today as an amazing avant-garde piece.
@vgoth100 Agreed. I think the last time I saw this was 1985! I didn't even remember who this was. But I only remembered the three guys destroying the instruments. And the Creepy girl. And the "dum...dum...dedum" samples. I typed "80's instrumental music" into Youtube. I saw the still image of the three guys and I immediately knew I'd found my lost treasure! This and "Rockit" were the freakiest videos of the 80s.
Dancing around a piano while destroying it with other instrument!!!
fuck i miss the 80's when weirdos where cool!!
now being cool is having a choreographer handling 90% of your video and the other 10% is showing the stuff you got with your borrowed money(Cars,Jewels and Clothes!)
@glimmer2158 I have to apologise for making that statement. When the video was released, this what I had heard about the girl. But trying to find this information now--nearly impossible. So I can't be sure it is true, and I will remove the statement from the comments.
I always loved this song & video. I think partly because the girl, and they chew up a 'cello (OK, it's really a bass). I was forced to play the cello as a child & hated it. So, this appealed to my inner "bass" instincts.
That girl is now about 30. Wonder if she still dresses like that. Also if this was the epitome of her career.
