  • Video by Zbigniew Rybczynski

  • This was, I kid you not... the first music video I ever saw. MTV, 1984.

  • excellent quality.... thank you

  • 'elf & safety would have a word with these guys today for making a video that promotes such rambunctious destruction of household items............meanwhile little kids would continue to watch rihanna, gaga, britney & co prance around in their skimpies. coz thats SOOOOOOO morally right(!)

  • Lol...this little girl freaked me out when I first saw this back when MTV was good...in the 80s. Great song. Still have it on vinyl.

  • ladies and gentlemen...eye protection is very important

  • Fuckng acid @_@!

  • Memmmmories

  • reminds me of men in black tv series

  • 'Alone And Asleep' by Oh Sam Bin Laden - controversial new publication.

  • @Mentocthemindtaker; I feel the same way, I must at least had been like 7 yrs. old when I first saw this video, now I know it's by Art Of Noise!! :)

  • I finally found this video! Hooray!

It's just as good as I remember. Didn't realise it was by Art of Noise though!

  • AON way before their time

  • HAY HAY HAYYYY

  • The girl's a little freaky for her age there but hey, the music is not bad when they play it when the TV company puts you on hold!

  • looks like they filmed this in eastern Europe, like Bratislava

  • May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.

  • Epic video!

  • i honestly think this music video is better than Thriller.

  • Venture Bros 'What Goes Down Must Come Up' anyone?

  • @clusterbomb12 I just watched that episode again! It's what inspired me to hunt or this vid and show my girlfriend.

  • That little girl reminds me of orphan.

  • Comment removed

  • The girl is actually the director, Zbigniew Rybczinski's daughter... He also did the clips for Lady Pank, "Minus Zero" - Iam Siam, "She Went Pop" and Chuck Mangione "Diana" to name a few others...

  • 30 years on and the little girl still frightens me...

  • One of the best, most hilarious videos ever. Moments in Love is also pretty funny.

  • I never realised how freaky-cool that little girl looked. Yah, and I'm with you @ohio1969; I wonder if she's still alive. Ahead of thier time!

  • This is like early Industrial.

  • From MTV's halcyon days.

  • I saw this video on Mtv as a kid. I was mesmirized.

  • I always wondered if she was a little person.

  • THE ART OF NOISE ROCKS

  • Hey does anyone know what ever happened to the little girl in the video that how she is an adult. I imagine she must be in her mid 30s

  • Beavis: Hey Butthead. Remember that video where that guy lost his wiener? He should watch this video.

Butthead: That's not his penis, Beavis. Ummm.... Beavis penis... Penis Beavis.... Penis Beavis Uranus..

Beavis: Shut up Butthead!!! I'll kick your ass!!

Butthead: Well at least my name doesn't rhyme with penis..

  • @cartman350 Hi...I am Hank Hill. I still do not appreciate the way ya'll threw up on my dog.....

  • Rich ard H. Kirk from cabaret Voltaie hated this group . He said they were like middle class formers

  • What did those instruments ever do to that little girl?

  • I wonder what ever happened to that little girl and where she is now.

  • Nearly thirty years later, this is still incredibly fresh and original sounding. Great video too.

  • This is the first time I had ever heard art of noise, dont even know what year it was. But it stuck with me for many years, very creative this vid is. One in a million. Love it.

  • I was 13 when this came out, and I wanted to tear that lil girl into pieces whenever I watched. I don't know why. She is still somewhat annoying, but I don't want to tear her to pieces anymore.

  • @kimmie1401 hi mom :)

  • The wienerdog doesn't appear until 3:30 :)

  • these men are genius! Not many people appreciate things like this.

  • I bought this on vinyl when it first came out. Never knew there was a video...

  • nice song

  • I was always jealous of the little girl. That is by far the coolest thing you could ever do as a child--and wear heavy makeup and torn fishnets whilst busting up a piano!

  • Wish my daughter looked liked that.

  • wonder what that little girl is tearin up today?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • I dig it!

  • That little lass, will be over 30 by now!

  • when i 1st saw that lil girl i was all confuzzled thinkin wat the heck is she????? is she human ??? lol

  • my "Childhood Anger" is starting to resurface!

  • la la la simply perfect!

  • hopehes licenced to use that chainsaw with 3 people round him that would be child endangerment

  • first time i've ever seen this and i'm blown as shit right now... so not good bro what the fuck1!!

  • 4 people didn't approve of the girl's lack of eye protection.

  • Great Post Capt.!

  • I wonder if prodigy used that 'hey!' sample too

  • THE CURVEBALL IN MUSIC WILL ALWAYS BE THIS GROUP!

  • Art of Noise was a visionary group from Britain who had a lot of imagination and great talent. This 1984 single is still holding strong after 26 years.

  • ingenious! always loved that video and song and beats and right on time;)

  • ...vroooooooom....

  • Watching this video baked (i.e. stoned, blazed, high, lifted, etc.) is fucking amazing! Wooowww dude!

  • This Vid is str8 Nuts!!! Never knew it existed!!!!

  • All those poor instruments they killed for this video.

  • that poor violin! i hope that violin wasn't too expensive!!!!!!!!!!

  • I read where those guys didn't like the video, cuz it made them out like background afterthoughts to the little punk girl lol. But its a cool song. Very weird, but cool.

  • that little girl is the shit!

  • @puertorican1883

one of my fav videos of the 80's!!

  • @ktothebomb definately

  • Love the beat. Hope that wasn't a strativarius.

  • The little girl is one of the band members daughters.

  • that poor piano :(

  • Such an exciting record, gets my heart thumping.

  • Classic and in my opinion the best AON track... ~~ lovin it ! ~~

  • Looks like this video was made in South Bronx; back then the place was pretty run down

  • Use to Break Dance a lot to this classic tune

  • I loved when The Prodigy used the sample of the little girl from this for Firestarter. Immediately recognizable.

  • @sideshowkitten: Oh - you show me a totally new side of The Prodigy :))))))

  • Anyone who does not LOVE this IS bunkers !

  • HEY!!!

  • classic great tune

  • BROOKLYN: THIS SONG IS VERY ANGRY AND MAD AND THATS WHAT CLOSE TO THE EDGE MEANS...

  • What.

  • tra-la-la

  • WHAT A SONG I LOVE THIS THIS IS 100% ART

  • Classic! Art Of Noise - 'Close To The Edit'...so important to me mid 80's! Wonder where that girl is now? Trevor Horn spent some time in Yes, and of course a classic Yes album (prior to his stint) was 'Close To The Edge', and I wonder if this was meant to be some kind of homage? This is alongside Tack>Head and other great things then. Brilliant!

  • @SKOTP69 Does his period in Yes count on the "90125" album, being that he was the producer of that record- and gave them their biggest hit?

  • Killer Song,

the three guys are Stock-Aitken-Waterman ???

    Haha......

  • @endlandmusic: No rather Stockhausen - Trevor Horn......aren´t we all a little bit Germa-nick??

  • VH1 classic !

  • Never mind the little girl, this video made me dress in badly fitted suits and go around smashing up instruments!

  • I remember this from High school back in 82 or 83 and thinking this is a the strangest video I have ever scene.

I could figure out if I like it or hated it. That always bothered me for some reason.

  • making this video was probably harder than writing the music

  • As far as the little girl is concerned, she has no skin showing, no heels, and she is not doing anything sexual (unless watching a little kid, dressed as a punk, ordering older guys around to break things gets u off) She is just an actress in a costume with makeup.

  • @lawilson1980 I agree, I don't think they're sexualizing the litte girl at all, she's just playing an interesting character in a hilariously weird 80's video! I don't see anything wrong here.

  • @MsLittle1105 Thank you. Now, if she were in a bra, see thu shirt, & booty shorts like the little girls today, *THAT* I would have a problem with.

  • @lawilson1980

Little girl? Do you mean a child or just a term for a dwarf because that looks to be an adult female dwarf.

  • @toomanyaccounts You need glasses.

  • 3:22 "To be in England, in the summertime, with my love, closer to the edge".

I LOVE THIS SONG! its a shame Art of Noise broke up. PLEASE COME BACK!

  • who is the little girl anyway?

  • I have been told the little girl did everything backwards and then they played it forwards. Thats why it looks jerky. Great vid, very well done the girl.

  • remember seeing this video on Beavis and Butthead lol.

  • Loved the spoof of this video in the Venture Bros!

  • Beavis and Butthead brought me here... I can't even explain how strange and screwy this video is.

  • Chucky's sister?

  • @bonscottrules

LOL i though that too!!! lol

  • wowww I remember my friend & his boys pop locked to this in our 8th grade talent show...great memories!

  • it's like a celebration of the very things they want to destroy. a musical flugtag if you will.

  • I am guessing this video is all about the electronic age, with bashing up all the instruments and what not.....

  • @monstarmatt Yes, absolutely...the bust of Beethoven at the beginning kind of gives it away.

  • Csúcs ez a videó, mind zeneileg, mind képileg!

Peak in this video, both musically and visually!

  • As a child of the 80s, I remember seeing this vid for the first time...they didn't show it much on MTV, as far as I recall...but when I did see it, my whole age 11 years old outlook on life changed! I was both creeped out and thrilled by the whole thing....I think it still stands up today as an amazing avant-garde piece.

  • @vgoth100 Agreed. I think the last time I saw this was 1985! I didn't even remember who this was. But I only remembered the three guys destroying the instruments. And the Creepy girl. And the "dum...dum...dedum" samples. I typed "80's instrumental music" into Youtube. I saw the still image of the three guys and I immediately knew I'd found my lost treasure! This and "Rockit" were the freakiest videos of the 80s.

  • @mindstormsabrewin so true!

  • @mindstormsabrewin Rockit totally freaked me out too! creepy disembodied robot legs....now I've got to go look it up and watch it again!

  • I find it funny how this was considered avant-garde, now it is the template for pop music. AON, the original kings of the samplers.

  • that one "HEY" means that they get writers credit on the Prodigy "FIRESTARTER"

  • Dancing around a piano while destroying it with other instrument!!!

fuck i miss the 80's when weirdos where cool!!

now being cool is having a choreographer handling 90% of your video and the other 10% is showing the stuff you got with your borrowed money(Cars,Jewels and Clothes!)

  • that little girl is amazing! shut up, everybody!

  • WHAT THE FUCK A PUNK MIDGET

    GET THE EYEBLEACH QUICKLY GENTLEMEN

  • Yeah, anti-music, with a catchy beat.

  • creepy little girl...

  • ...back in the days when music videos were not trying to sell people an image; they were simply a video producer's random vision.

  • the little girl is really hardcore!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @SeparatriX59 You wouldn't know whatever happened to her would you?

  • @glimmer2158 I have to apologise for making that statement. When the video was released, this what I had heard about the girl. But trying to find this information now--nearly impossible. So I can't be sure it is true, and I will remove the statement from the comments.

  • I always loved this song & video. I think partly because the girl, and they chew up a 'cello (OK, it's really a bass). I was forced to play the cello as a child & hated it. So, this appealed to my inner "bass" instincts.

That girl is now about 30. Wonder if she still dresses like that. Also if this was the epitome of her career.

  • Nothing short of genius..

  • TOO COOL!! Very artistic!

  • Sorry... I don't under stand the video at all?

  • @Scriipto I think that's the point my love

  • this video hurts me :(

  • 1:06

  • Ahh....memories of 1984! Trevor Horn and Anne Dudley were the BOMB...

  • @Dilberto88 No Doubt!! => This group influenced the the hell outta me. Some of my friends think they're weird, but I keep telling them "you don't understand" lol

  • guys are using eyeshields while little girl isnt- awesome OSHA violations, i luv it. what a classic!!

  • Hey hey hey

  • still an awesome video!

  • Is that the Highline?

  • @MrRik2 yes that is the highline by 14th street. i snuck up there 10 years ao and it still looked like this video. now its all yuppies and flowers ;) !

  • @veuvecliquot Aha - my peepers do not deceive me! Yes, it is indeed - horribly yuppified. We should drag their furniture out of their condos and smash it up in homage to this video.

  • @veuvecliquot Where - NYC?

  • @KutWrite yeah 13th st off west side highway, manhattan

  • this "hey" is used in "firestarter" by the prodigy

  • LOOOOOOOOVE this video!!!!! man 80's music is really starting to grow on me!

  • To be in England in the summertime, with my love, close to the edge.

  • never new trevor horn was behind them..

  • Lil' Punk-Princess...awwww.

  • I think the video is just trying to say that music doesn't have to come from traditional instruments; music is just whatever that sounds good to you...

...that and 80s videos were freakin' WEIRD! XD

  • This is one of the sickest and greatest video of all time

  • This little girl is the 80's.

  • @NeverEver19994:

She surely is and could we have a bit of the 80s back?

    ....LOL

    - i enjoyed almost every minute !

  • @NeverEver19994 strange comment to say...

  • Destruction of musical instruments is just plain disgusting. This lowers my respect for Art of Noise.

  • @xargos Shut up.

  • That`s Cindy Lauper as an abused child!!! LOL

  • Venture Brothers sort of copied the intro :P

  • I can't help but feel the video is trying to make a statement about something. I could be reading too deep into it, but it never hurts. :)

  • If i was on drugs i would be so freaking out right now!

  • Yup, this is back when MTV was awesome! I was in highschool and fell in love with this song and video. It was very strange and kind of scarry to us. If that's what a kid gets out of this video, now I see that they were braking the mold. I still love to listen to it.

  • The little girl looks evil don't she lmao

  • This video still kicks ass all these years later.

And so far as the 'punk' girl goes, I hope she is sharing her memories of working on this video with her children now.

  • I was in high school when this came out. It was very strange to us and was the first time I saw a little kid in a video like this. A weird departure from the other videos that had story lines with boys chasing girls or long haired guys in spandex.

  • the Art of Noise will always defeat a youtube popularity-searching algorithm.

  • Some noise l approve of that today still sounds like art and acts like art compared to most trash in the art that thinks its art today, but is merely a manufactured noise posing in the art for arts sake with a taste more atuned, for the price of fame.

  • now that was trippy

  • Love it, Never gets old, and still slightly ODD !

  • cool vido i always wondered if the little girl is the daughter of one of the band members

  • Nobody in this video is related to, or had anything to do with, the band. In fact, AoN had nothing to do with the video - their label did the video without AoN's knowledge or input.

  • UK ~rocked the~ US.. with these jams.......im still loving it...

  • dum..dum..da dum dum dum dum dum- dum...dum...dum tra la la - dum...dum...da dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum...dum...dum tra la tra la tra la la! Sweet sweet stuff - the Art of Noise has no rivals!

  • Awesome song
