I love this song, and I love Joe Bataan period! His voice is so distinctive, and very recognizable. I've been listening to him since I was a kid, and now my 10 year old daughter listens to him as well and loves his music too.
My first latin album was "Gypsy Women" purchased by working a part-time job after school. As a HS Student at Brandeis HS in Mnahattan, had the pleasure of knowing one of his musicians; and as an adult, lived up the block from him on East 233 st Bronx Blvd. The Bklyn concerts in the park, and other personal occasions shared where off-the-hook. Thank God for a great singer, still kicking and my brother in Christ,.

My father had all of the Faina Records. This one is my favorite cover version of Curtis Mayfield's Gyspy Woman by Joe Bataan because it was more funky and had a latin beat to it..I played this song at my wedding in 2006.We danced all night.
OMG...the great JOE BATAAN... BOOGALOO ERA...I danced to the likes of him, Joe Cuba, Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, Pete Rodriguez, The Lebron Bros, Mongo Santamaria and many others....Please keep on uploading more ot the great BOOGALOO's... THANKS...
The song that did it for him! Nice arrangement! Can't wait to work with JOE BATAAN on April 17, 2010 in Hackensack, NJ at MAKING CROSSROADS 2. He performs so rarely in NJ. A true privilege for us!
excuse me, filipinos are partly hispanic. we just don't speak spanish out here anymore. but our culture is partly hispanic nevertheless. bataan's music should be the standard by which filipino music today should be measured. its a shame most filipinos today do not even know JB and his music exist. its nice to know a few of us do. he was like a god in the philippines during the 70's, man! i play the trumpet and i swear to our ancestors that i will learn to play some of JB's tunes! peace.
@xpressivist Sad to say I concur....was he revered over here back then? Wonder what he was thinking about being invited for a command performance by the Marcoses....
@1939moreno Who cares he was a great talent. Is there a Natonallity for that. Come on grow-up and just enjoy the talent of the man. First he was human..........
@filipinojg17 u stupid or what of course he was puerto rican.....there is many afrolatinos for ur info .. u sound ignorant.............................
@filipinojg17 And that is the amazing thing. Joe and his band came out to Northern California last year. I saw him, and I can say that I was one of the few white people in the audience. It was a sea of latino folks. And Joe didn't disappoint- He and his band were awesome.
In 1973, he helped coin the phrase "salsoul," lending its name to his first post-Fania album. Along with the Cayre brothers, he co-founded Salsoul label, though later sold out his interest. He recorded three albums for Salsoul and several singles, including "Rap-O Clap-O," from 1979 which became an early hip hop hit.
Looking back on the days dancing at Hunts point Palace in the Bronx to the latin Sound of Joe Bataan.

For someone who was entirely self taught (he had no formal training) and couldn't read or write music, I'd agree.
