Marx and Engel thought that through socialism, we could eventually get to a government free Utopia, but they distinguished their system from both socialism and capitalism, yet relied on both to achieve that end. I disagree with your premise that all or even most choose poverty. It flies in the face of reality. We are created equal as souls, but not equal of intellect, of emotional stability, or available resources. To say that people "choose" poverty is absurd. To state that most anyone can rise above it..without a caveat that for some it is far easier than for others, is callous, intellectually dishonest and frankly, an unChristian point of view.

First, not all those who find themselves at poverty's doorstep are there because of THEIR choices and this for the most part is the plight of children in poverty. Keep them dependent on the hand outs. If he actually lifts them from poverty, he will lose his voters.

Of course it makes no sense to any given individual that they would "choose" poverty, but we do choose the consequences of our actions when we choose the action. So when someone sluffs off at a job and gets canned, they may not want to get fired, but it's by virtue of their choice that they were. Or if social welfare makes it easier to not work than to work, a choice is made to accept the welfare benefits in lieu of working and a person can find, by his/her choice, that they aren't getting rich.

I can't watch Hannity now, he's far too right winged with too little to offer in intelligent analysis. I really like Cavuto, Ben Stein, and Krauthammer, though. Buchanan and Scarborough are okay, but PB is getting old and dim.

Well, to give you credit, you are correctly remembering Marxism. Marx and Engel thought that through socialism, we could eventually get to a government free Utopia, but they distinguished their system from both socialism and capitalism, yet relied on both to achieve that end. Marx, in a dictation to Engel in c.a. 1892, recanted much of his thesis because it wouldn't actually work. The socialist component grows government which is contrary to the end goal.
But Hitler was indeed a socialist.

I disagree with your premise that all or even most choose poverty. It flies in the face of reality. We are created equal as souls, but not equal of intellect, of emotional stability, or available resources. To say that people "choose" poverty is absurd. To state that most anyone can rise above it..without a caveat that for some it is far easier than for others, is callous, intellectually dishonest and frankly, an unChristian point of view.

Let's calm down the rhetoric a bit on both sides. First, not all those who find themselves at poverty's doorstep are there because of THEIR choices and this for the most part is the plight of children in poverty. True, that some are physically disabled, or worse, mentally damaged by those that are supposed to nurture and care for them. However, as many have proven, such as Chris Gardner ("Pursuit of Happyness") have shown, MOST have the ability to rise up, particularly in America.

So there is a point that Society has to confront the problem of poverty. The socialist wants to take from the wealthy and just hand it to the poor. Does this solve the problem or just create a new generation of poverty. You speak of callous, but I propose this, most, like Barney Franks have only a singular interest in the poor, creating a constituency of loyal voters. How to keep them loyal? Keep them dependent on the hand outs. If he actually lifts them from poverty, he will lose his voters.

On the other hand, Americans are good people. Let them prosper under a low tax burden. Rather than in the hands of inefficient government, leave the money in the hands of the people who, because of their own self interest, will apply that money to industry, and create wealth where none previously existed. Some will get rich, maybe even VERY rich, but much of it will be new wealth Like I said, American's are good, charitable people and they'll reach out to those that need.

Of course it makes no sense to any given individual that they would "choose" poverty, but we do choose the consequences of our actions when we choose the action. So when someone sluffs off at a job and gets canned, they may not want to get fired, but it's by virtue of their choice that they were. Or if social welfare makes it easier to not work than to work, a choice is made to accept the welfare benefits in lieu of working and a person can find, by his/her choice, that they aren't getting rich.

I think you make a good point here. In the 500 char limit of YouTube, it's difficult to get too specific, but there are many different folks on both sides of the spectrum. Republicans don't all own guns and liberals aren't all socialists. Well, if the economy was melting and the end was near, I'd rather be stuck with the Fox crowd than the MSNBC crowd with tingles going up their legs or trickles going down them or whatever the supernatural experience that seems to captivate them whenever Obama charms them with his presence. I regret that they lost Alan Colmbs because he was a hoot, but they've still got Geraldo Rivera and Kirsten Powers offering some balance. And they have some neutral anchors like Shepard Smith. I can't tell what side of the fence he sits, but he go balistic when an interviewee goes stupid on him. Greg Gutfield is pretty fun to watch, too. All have criticized Bush except maybe Hannity.

Rachel also gets pissed at him because he wont drop dont ask dont tell, and still says marriage is between a man and woman. So they dont always love him either. Agreed, CSPAN doesn't have any fancy props or camera work, but it does come straight across the wire without embellishment, particularly congressional sessions. I do like a vigorous debate, however and for that reason enjoy Fox, but less now than when Alan Colmbs was on. I can't watch Hannity now, he's far too right winged with too little to offer in intelligent analysis. I really like Cavuto, Ben Stein, and Krauthammer, though. Buchanan and Scarborough are okay, but PB is getting old and dim.

My favorite personality is actually the rather demur Kirsten Powers. Sharp as a tack, articulate, and pretty fair minded. She usually takes a left of center approach to things, but never resorts to rhetoric or pejoratives. I wish they had teamed her up with Hannity, but Hannity shouts people down and she's too polite and quiet to hold up against that. He's had her as a guest and it was disappointing because he over dominated the discussion with non-sequitor talking points.

Look, at some point Obama has to take responsibility for the state of the Union. If the job was too big for him, he shouldn't have sought the office. No one needs to apologize for Bush, he screwed up and for once admitted it when he gave full reign to Paulson, Bernanky, and Geitner. But I don't think a majority voted for Obama so that we could have 4 years of blaming the former administration. He's had 7 full months to put out a plan and we're getting nothing but Junk from both him and Congress.

whit- One of the ways to save money is through "The Insurance Exchange" which forces the for-profits to compete across state lines. But all of a sudden the right wing is against competition..isn't that strange?
Another way is to take the paper work of Advantage in-house and not guarantee a profit to the insurance companies...another way is to negotiate lower drug costs on medicare D.
Of course you ignore those proposals.. in order to try to scary the elderly with you "death panel" bullshit.
