You may want to order the movie The Golden Veil, it will open up your eyes and you will know who was really behind the revolution and supported Khomeni and brought him into power, its the same hands that brougyt the Shah into power.
In 1979 revolution, it was more than just a revolution by the Iranians. It had alot to do with Shah not wanting to extend the 27 year old oil contract for another 27 years and he was becoming powerful. Carter wanted Shah out and Khoemnie in for two reasons, one was to get cheaper oil and another was to make sure the Soiviet Union would not expand their influence obviously Khomeni had other ideas..
The oil contracts in Iraq are all being awarded on live Iraqi tv with the Govt. officials and the oil company officials in the audience watching as the sealed bids are opened. So there is total honesty and transparency.
If the US was in Iraq for its oil it would not have allowed such a transparent system of oil contract awards to be set up. To the contrary the US Govt. is aware of all the speculation that it invaded Iraq solely for its oil.
The oil contracts not being extended is a well known fact, in 1953 when Shah came into power the contract was for $5 or $10 per barrel then in 1977 or 1978 the contract expired and the US wanted it extended and the Shah refused. He made a speech on national TV and I would have to say the speech he made it pretty much caused his downfall by the western power.

The movie is not well made, I will admit that the actors are not hollywood professionals but it does get the message out. The director will be at MIT next month and there will be a showing of the movie and Q&A afterwards for the students.

The Shah made a major error by leaving Iran for a "vacation"...it was rightly perceived by the Iranian army as an abandonment of them and iran.
He should have been like Hitler and fought it out to the bitter end in his palace with his Iranian national guard fighting with him. Yes...send his family out of the country but he should have manned up and fought like a man ...instead of just fleeing like Kaiser Wilhelm II did in 1918. That lost him a lot of respect. He fled also before in 1949!

That speech "I understand your revolution" was the Shah's downfall. And his wife was its main author. Soon as he said the world "revolution" the people realized how weak he was, and how strong they were, and that was the end of him. He was a pushover who couldn't pick his speeches or be the MAN in the relationship.
So much for "the progress of women" in Iran. The western-educated and supposedly "enlightened" Queen Farah imploded the whole regime with just one badly chosen word.

This was quite literally the most popular revolution ever, more popular than the bolshevik one or the chinese one (1949) as a percentage of population involved. Not without its flaws, but making Iran again a western colony is not particularily great. However, I can't say I like all of this regime: it's more pan-islamic and it downplays pre-islamic persian culture and zoroastrianism.

It does appear to me that there was a lot of people in the streets protesting the Shah...and also a lot of people in the streets welcoming Khomeini when he arrived in Iran....and also many of the Iranian national guard troops joined the protester
So there is a wide variation in opinions depending upon if someone was pro-Shah or anti-Shah.

the Mossadeq affair only lasted about 3 days...so there was no time for any meaningful US Govt. involvement in that..
The Shah refused to allow free and open elections, freedom of speech, assembly and press., a Parliament with multiple parties.
I Think the Iranians like to blame foreigners for their own problems. They have a lot of corruption there per Transparency International.

In 1979 revolution, it was more than just a revolution by the Iranians. It had alot to do with Shah not wanting to extend the 27 year old oil contract for another 27 years and he was becoming powerful. Carter wanted Shah out and Khoemnie in for two reasons, one was to get cheaper oil and another was to make sure the Soiviet Union would not expand their influence obviously Khomeni had other ideas..

The oil contracts in Iraq are all being awarded on live Iraqi tv with the Govt. officials and the oil company officials in the audience watching as the sealed bids are opened. So there is total honesty and transparency.
If the US was in Iraq for its oil it would not have allowed such a transparent system of oil contract awards to be set up. To the contrary the US Govt. is aware of all the speculation that it invaded Iraq solely for its oil.

The oil contracts not being extended is a well known fact, in 1953 when Shah came into power the contract was for $5 or $10 per barrel then in 1977 or 1978 the contract expired and the US wanted it extended and the Shah refused. He made a speech on national TV and I would have to say the speech he made it pretty much caused his downfall by the western power.

So I think this Iranian Revolution had very little to do with oil.
Rather it had to do with the geopolitical situation in Iran-Afganistan-Pakistan.
That part of the world is full of Islamic extremists...more so than the Arab countries.

@farshid71 I'm not an oil industry expert but I do know that Aramco...the Saudi royal oil company was for many years about 50% owned by foreigner...british or Americans..then in 1980 the Saudis took control of Aramco as was prior agreed to.
Yet there was no revolution in Saudi Arabia...not even any big street protests.
and Saudi Arabia is even more oppressive than the Shah was as far as women's rights, freedom of religion etc.
So this can't really be just about oil revenue sharing.

Like I said in Iran it wasn't just about oil alone, it was sort of killing two birds with one stone. Oil and communisim, to stop Soviet Union expansion Carter thought Islam was the answer. I had a friend that worked in Iran Sepah, they are like the CIA if you will. I once asked him what was the whole revolution about, I thought it was because of the Shah being a dictator and he told me that was just a show the trusth of the matter it was oil and communsim.

the dilemma is this, how to create a modern state in Iran, yet also allow the traditionals too have theyre own place. in Canada certain religious sects live theyre own way. =Amish, Mennonites, Quakers, many do not even use cars or modern things. and yet they are in the heart of a modern industrial state! with the same rights others have. Iran can do this too!

problem is that the Amish, Mennonites, Quakers, all are christians and christianity is a religion mainly based on faith. Islam however has rules and regulations in addition to faith, they're called sharia, and according to islam they are supposed to be applied in all muslim lands.
in general, chratianity is a religion.

I believe if Shah was given a 2nd chance he would govern iran and be just a sovereign, a constitutional monarc, as HIM once considered, just for not loose Iran to the hands of a teocratical regime as it happened.

I'm fairly sure the theocracy will fall relatively soon. Half the Iranian population is under 25...and most of them don't like the government, or fanatical Islam.

Khomeini was a genius: He set a system which will evolve towards greater success as years as go by. As time goes by, Iran becomes more powerful and sovereign, something the Shah would never be able to do.

Iran is more free than it ever was, so free that it is becoming a world power instead being a puppet of a world power like it was under the Shah.
Iran may not be free by "western" standards, but at least it is true to itself now. At least it is sovereign now, unlike most of the rest of the world, which is controlled by the West.

@crizl2007 In the US, one professor was jailed for supporting Palestine, and an FBI raid killed a sheikh in Detroit a couple of weeks ago. Also, the US has started two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan which has caused the death and displacement of millions. To me, these are forms of persecution which have no moral basis.
I sympathize with you, don't get me wrong, but I do not think that religious laws are from the middle-ages, you can't put time-frames on religion.

My grandfather worked closely with the Shah, so I'm no ignorant because I have the fact almost in first hand, not what is said by the media or by some guy who worked for Carter and helped to dethrone HIM . actually it's your closed minded views that mislead your judgments. You are so opinionated that you refuse to accept the reality that the Shah came to power with the aid of the CIA, it has been widely stated by people in authorities, the coup is no longer a secret anymore, pls read more, again it only takes a little effort. The current geopolitical climate calls for a subservient Iran, one that has no self determination but servitude to western ideals, misinformation and brainwashing is key.

Of course I know that the Shah was in power because not only CIA but also MI6 in a operation called Ajax. But that was because of WWII that the british and the soviet union invaded Iran so they would have acces to the Iranian RailRoad to aid the soviet army in war with Germany. But before the 1950's coup, Reza Shah was in power, so his son was legitimate successor of the throne! Soon or later HIM would gain the power over Iran with or without the coup de etat of Ajax.
