At this point in her life Judy had already had cancer surgery - it wasn't something that was talked about in those days.- she was happily and hopefully looking towards the future with "Hot Spot," but that show had taken so much out of her. Many endless rewrites and incredible pressures came crashing upon her during the "previews." "Hot Spot" actually ran for a bit more than a month (43 performances) and the critics loved Judy - but didn't care for the show itself. A lovely lady indeed!!
She was doing Hot Spot when she died. I remember the announcement on the Radio. I was a young teen living in NYC. Our lives were intertwined with Broadway. I never quite got over her terrible way of dying. People spoke hardly at all in those days of breast cancer. Don't remember if I had seen this episode.... watched it regularly. My mom knew all the panelists well. Ah..... Judy..... still miss you and never tire of seeing your films. I hope you are in a better place but what a loss for us.
These programs are treasure troves of graceful panelists and eternal stars whose like we will never see again. Judy Holliday was transcendent in every role she played.
Drew, just looked for it and there's the CD, at Amazon, thank you again Now I can enjoy that duet so much easier than hitting my tape player every time to get it to work.....lol :)
Drew, saw your reply and am very appreciative for that information. I didn't know anyone else that was as interested in that performance so left with just hoping and you really came thru for my quest.. Since its a movie, I might be able to get the CD of the soundtrack now. It has a fantastic duet ...Thank you very much, it really has a great singing performance and hope more people will find it and enjoy their great performance too....Again thanks very much....
could someone tell me info concerning her singing with Dean Martin the song "Just In Time" it is on Youtube but I'd like to know if that clip is from a movie or a TV show with Dean or her own show. Its the best duet I've ever heard with him. I would like to get a copy of this recording , hopefully on CD. I only have it on cassette of Dean Martin called "All the Best, Volume 1" 1998. Any help!
I just found and listened to Judy's "the party's over" on YouTube commemorating those who have since passed and did notice I thought it was difficult for Judy to sing that song...I've only heard a couple and all beautifully sung...Thanks for giving me something else of hers to listen....I'm sorry so many could not appreciate her in our life time.....I think the best I've heard of her is with Dean Martin singing Just in Time......Thanks again
@weightfeather1 - Thank you for your info about her at the time of this show, I've recently become interested with her. I heard a Dean Martin song with her called Just In Time..and its hard to find..I first heard the song on a cassette tape and didn't know who his singing partner was until now.
theyre showing Born yesterday tomorrow night on AntennaTv-my 3 favorite actresses in no particular order are Alice faye, linda Darnell and Judy Holliday
@weightfeather1 I'm guessing that your understanding is correct. After consulting websites and biographies, I've been unable to determine myself whether it started in her breast or throat. That might not be known, though I don't know that for a fact.
In this clip, Daly reaches an embarrassing low by asking Judy Holliday if she "remembers" "Born Yesterday" -- which she played on the stage for four years, then starred in the movie version and won the Oscar for Best Actress! Yes, John, I think she might have some vague recollections of that ....................
John Daly didn't know or care much about show business (he was a news man). Arlene Francis became the "designated driver" to comment on the performers' plays or movies after in 1954 John told Doris Day how much he enjoyed her in "Young at Heart," and she replied, "But, John, I haven't started filming it yet." ...
We watched "Born Yesterday" again today. I had forgotten how wonderful it was. Thanks for posting this video. She was really something and a pleasure to watch.
I'm a Charlie Chaplin fan one note Judy was in love with Sydney Chaplin, Charlie's son not brother. But alas they never married although Judy wanted to.
She was great. Saw her movies on tv when i was a kid. Great stuff. There was one on tv yesterday, but not sure of the title. Was her as a single girl moving to new york.
Miss Holiday was a great lady. I caught her a few days ago on TV "It Could Happen To You". According to Frank Sinatra, she had the greatest "caboose" (tush) in Hollywood.
Wow...they certainly guessed Judy's identity rather quickly! I've never heard of the musical "Hot Spot" that she was appearing in when she did this episode. What a unique talent & gifted performer she was. Cancer taking her at such a young age certainly was one of show biz's greatest tragedies. THANK YOU for sharing this fascinatin' footage with us! :)
@JubalCalif "Hot Spot" was her last stage show, that only ran for two weeks and marked the last of Judy Holiday soon after "hot spot" ended so did her life.
One of the saddest stories about this great star involved a fan who approached her in public toward the end of her life and asked her if she "used to be" Judy Holliday, if I'm recalling correctly. She lit up everything she was involved in. Her early, tragic loss still reverberates today.
I like mickeymantle7777 comment. After seeing Judy in Born Yesterday, he could understand why she beat out Gloria Swanson (Sunset Boulevard) and Bette Davis (All About Eve) for the best actress Oscar.
Some say that the other 2 ladies split the vote, but I prefer to think that Judy's performance was one of a kind and one fort the ages.
I was in love with Judy Holliday. She became my first crush after I saw her in the film version of "Bells are Ringing". I was heartbroken when she died. They don't make them like her anymore. Bennett Silverstein
yes, perhaps, but that doesn't answer my question. where does the info come from and what can we (all) consider to be the surest souce of viable info? (we know the surest sources of nonsense info:)
The Judy Holliday Resource Center (online) says Ms. Holliday appeared on NBC's "Tonight" show on May 6, 1963 and in November 1963. This WML appearance is likely the last TV appearance still available.
yes, ok, just read that--that changes everything if the info is accurate. where does the info come from? why then does Wikipedia say she died of throad cancer? you have to wonder, no?
From the Judy Holliday Resource Center (on-line): "At the time of her death, the cause was reported to be throat cancer because the real cause, breast cancer, was not considered a 'socially acceptable' cause of death. She did have a benign tumor removed from her throat five years prior to her death, but recurring bouts with breast cancer is what ultimately claimed her."
A similar statement appeared in a 1980s book. Maybe some other sources just went with the reports of throat cancer?
Sadly Judy died from cancer when she was only 43. Dorothy died under strange circumstances, that has been linked to the assassination of president Kennedy.
@mickeymantle7777 1950 was a super tough year for the Academy to pick a winner for best actress. Eleanor Parker's performance in Caged is superb, an amazing movie. Anne Baxter, Gloria Swanson and Judy Holliday, the winner, all fantastic in their respective roles, and who couldn't love Judy Holiday . But Bette Davis' acting in All About Eve is one of the most unforgettable performances in the history of cinema, she mesmerizes me. Miss Davis should have won the Oscar that night, she was robbed.
@SoCalGal52 The rumor at the time (still prevalent today) was that both Davis and Swanson gave such tremendous performances that the Academy was deeply divided in their voting, enabling Judy to slip through the back door and get the Oscar.
@stevelane1 That makes sense, so many great performances that year. Somebody had to win, and Judy got it. She's great, don't get me wrong, a wonderful performance. Great personality and cute dimples. Miss Davis seemed okay with Judy winning, great performances had by all nominees in 1950. Sad that Miss Holiday died so young, cancer is evil.
I second that emotion! Bette & Gloria gave stunning performances....but NOT as brilliant as Judy's. It's too bad it couldn't have been a THREE way tie that year, the way Katherine Hepburn & Barbara Streisand tied for an Oscar later in the 60's.
According to many biographers and those who knew her well, Judy was not only beautiful but also incredibly intelligent. This would often surprise those who expected her persona to be similar to that of her character, Billie, in "Born Yesterday" (who also turned out to be more intelligent than initially perceived).
This is a program from April 28, 1963. Judy Holliday's death from breast cancer on June 7, 1965 took away from us one of the most gifted stars of the stage and screen. The show that she was in at this point, "Hot Spot," ran only five weeks. It was Ms. Holliday's last stage performance.
I heard it was from throat cancer--blamed by smoking and abhorred by all who indeed loved her. Such a presence, speaking and singing voice--she is sorely missed--even now.
I've read she died of breast cancer in a couple of biographies and several websites. "The Judy Holliday Reference Center" (online) says a benign tumor was removed from her throat when she was doing "Laurette," but she was diagnosed with breast cancer at that time. A mastectomy was performed. A second mastectomy was done after "Hot Spot." I'm relying on memory re two bios written in the 1980s, but I believe they also said she died of breast cancer.
thank you. what a torturous subject since whatever she died of, it was atrociously painful (i assume she is wearing a wig on this show) and killed her, whom we all love(d) so much. even these exchanges, a real sharing, are dolorous for me. She was so beloved.
