Aah, the (almost) first appearance of Alec Scudder! I love how he gradually sneaks around the edge of the movie, until during the last third he really becomes such a major character and driving force. Plus, he's extremely adorable. Rupert Graves is such a talent, and so beautiful to look at. I can't imagine anyone else in the role of Alec.
LOL people lay off the stache! At the time, most men had moustaches.Besides, it doesn't look that bad. Better than my dad's mullet/moustache combo in the 90's...
Got half way through the previous part and I was like hallelujah the mustache is gone!!!! The joy was short lived....and it ruins clive's face even more than it ruined maurice's!
Such ignorance back then. The cure for being attracted to men is...a pretty young woman! Kind of like how the cure for alcoholism is to just drink tea, that'll do it! (I suppose technically that would work, but my point is the idea of there being a "cure" for something firstly not a sickness - though alcoholism is that - but also not "curable" by just forcing oneself to replace it with the opposite)
this is the one that the problem some of gay couple.. its not LOVE! its a game.. not real feellings.. clive! he so such a big bullshit!! fucking crazy.. guy! if im there with them i will tell to him "you're not worthy your not seriously to me.. you will be mistake s on my love for you.. damn! you.. damn! you..." huhuhuhuhu. MAURICE.. can you be mine? i will promise and i swear that i will love you with all my heart..
yeah I got the reason why the doctor wanted to see it. Its just when you think about why Maurice went there in the first place, and then how the 'appointment' started it is just ironic.
I understand that the mustache and hair is the time period style but seriousl this is a movie, I can honestly say that nobody would care unless you like every little detail to be correct.
Few people look good with a mustache, my dad looks better with one but he's 57, so I don't think that counts. And my brother also looks better with a beard and mustache, but I'm used to it so I also don't think that counts.
I know... It would be so much better if they just had no facial hair. I mean, if a guy with a moustache kissed another guy with a moustache, wouldn't they get all messed up and... yeah... didn't really think that through.
how uncultured times. they had no education related to sexuality. probably he did not use his penis at all, and the uncontrollable sexual excitement was scaring him. poor Maurice.
The actor playing the family Doctor is the late Denholm Elliott, he was gay and died in '92. He was an accomplished actor with a long list of movie credits, some dating all the way back to WW2.
An old gay man makes a pass at Maurice, basically giving Maurice the idea that this pathetic existence is what he's destined for if he doesn't change, hence the reason he seeks out treatment first from the family doctor, who was completely useless and then the American psychoanalyst.
Isn't she the same actor who played Celia in Brideshead, now all grown up? I liked her acting in Brideshead, not so much in here. I agree, she's too plain for this role..
I think the whole idea is that clive married a woman who isn't bvery pretty, because gay men don't really care if their wife is pretty or not - they are not sexually attracted to her anyway...

i think maybe the old man..assumed some things about maurice. like gay-ness sorta things, which maurice didn't like.
or else that's the picture i got from it, anyhow. i guess it's down to interpretation :)
