This Laptop is a total piece of sh1t! I bought this 3 years ago and since buying it it has overheated constantly, I have had 3 motherboards , 3 batteries, 2 power adaptors, and so many software issues it's untrue! Dell refuse to replace the unit. It went out of warranty so I bought another 2 years warranty for £90. I now have to call engineers again as after they replaced the 3rd motherboard the optical drive ceased working!

@Pucker7 get you facts straight, Raid 0 or striped drives combine 2 drives into one. Therefore if you have 2 200gb drives you have one 400 (a bit less than this)gb striped drive.

ahhhhh that's my fault, I meant all my anger towards him then not you anyways... I have an asus G51 with an x9100 clocked at 3.54ghz, ram clocked at 980mhz and a gtx 260m clocked at 605/1535/950 making it 7% faster than a stock 280m ... not a shit brick m1730. An so far no one has combined mobile sli with the new mobile i7s.. The fastest 17incher with mobile i7s is the np8690 and its based on calpella obviously with a 280m and gddr3 1333 ram.

Don't do it, without the warranty the m1730 is worth very little, as they're prone to failure, which in the situation where it does fail it will cost a small fortune to repair. I've had mine replaced 3 times, and i'm regretting buying the m1730. Its probably best to keep the much more powerful desktop.
And an 8800m gtx is the same card as 9800m gt. Gts 240m = 9800m gt
Cpu wise the only upgrade in chipset and architecture is the corei7 series that was just released into notebooks a week ago. They got rid of the front side bus technology , now using hyperthreading the cpus are more power efficient. For example the cpu will control the speed now just all amd cpus have been doing, very similar. For example The 920XM (extreme revision)cpu is set at 2.0 and can fly up to 3.2 .
Actually, i7 wasn't released in notebooks a week ago. They've been available in actual 920, 940, and 975 forms in Sager laptops since August 2009. Alienware just got them in their new M15x laptop, so yes, they changed it to a LESS powerful 720XM - 920XM. Plus, It doesnt fly up to 3.2. It has a boost feature, and when set at high performance (in computer properties), can fly up to 3.2 GHz for maximum speeds.
Core i7 mobile cpus were released 2 weeks ago now.
Sagers clevoe based laptop np8690 uses the desktop core i7. That laptop has been offering the ability to use desktop cpus for years now. So back to the MOBILE Core i7 920qm, it cranks up to 3.2ghz depending on the stress on each core and the amount of cores which the application/game being used can except. This is how all the core i7 cpus work. The 920qm is the only one that can be set through BIOS to always run at 3.2.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but based on benchmarking results, the "GTX 260m" = 9800m gt = 8800m gtx, because the GTX 260m equipped asus g51 has been show to be outperformed (albeit slightly) by the Gateway P-7808u FX, with the 9800m gts and same q9000 processor.
The gt 240 is equal to about an 9700m gt according to notebookcheck's laptop graphics benchmark list.
I will correct you. The gtx260m in the G51 is underclocked in the bios by Asus to constrict the heat, many laptop manufacturers do this, clevo underclocks the 260m in the np8662 as well.Once it is set to stock Nvidia clocks, it is equal to a desktop 9800 gtx. A 9800gtx is an 8800gt set at higher clocks. The 8800m gtx = 9800m gt. Both have 96 pixel shader, clocked the same and same bus. A 9800m gtx is the same card as a gtx 260,both have 112 shaders, same bus but the 260m is clocked higher.CHEERS
How could the GT 240m ( GTS 240m does not exist!) be even remotely compared to the 9800m gt as in your original comment. The gt 240m has only 47 stream processors against the 97 of the 9800m gt, and the 3dmark06 difference (at OEM clock freq's) is around 4000. I'm not debating the validity of the 260m being little more than an further overclocked G92b, but i'm just stating that the GTX260m provides a better comparison to the 9800m gt/8800m gtx than the GT240m.
THAT WAS NOT ME COMMENTING ON THE X9100, THAT WAS "STEELCITY1981", I'm referring to something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. And anyway, how could you have an x9100 in an m1730? Dell states that the M1730 motherboard cannot support Montevina Chips, you imbecile. SO GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT NEXT TIME BEFORE YOU POST. Anyway I have an m1730 with x9000 C2E and SLI 8800m GTX's and I can tell you that the new Clarksfield mobile i7 chips and GTX 280m SLI's would rip the m1730 up, but I don't care to be honest.
A gts 250m is what I was referring to is equal to a 9800m gs. The 9800m gts is equal to an 8800m gt or a desktop 9600 gt. A 260m is clocked higher and has a whole new architecture meaning the 260m stock clocks would be pushing a 9800m gtx to it's final limit. A 9800m gt is pathetic, it scores high 8k in 3dmark while a stock nvidia clocked 260m can hit high 9k to 10 k and can be pushed to hit 12 plus k like mine is set at.
actually the p8 series is the same as the t series and x series. The only difference between them is the heat. P series is all 35nm as the x series cpus are 45nm. Read up buddy. The archistecture is exactly the same so between them it is a battle of clock speeds. ROFL and how do you stick the q series in there. Quad is a completely new story, it wont have a big effect unless the game supports quad, otherwise its back to clock speeds. DDR3 ram is proven not to offer an advantage over ddr2 yet.
Damn in just little over two years even that thing is pretty outdated. That's why i wouldn't spend a lot of money on a notebook gaming rig, because you can't upgrade the gpu and you are pretty much stuck with it for the life of that laptop.
how is it outdated huh? It can have up to a dual 8800m gtxs and an x9100 core2extreme that can be overclocked easily to a steady 3.51ghz. That setup alone scores a good 13,000 in 3dmark06.
The Core 2 Extreme is outdated now All the the P8xxx series will out perform it. The Q9xxx mobile series will beat it hands down and the new Core ix mobile series will simply mop the floor with it.
The Geforce 8800m's are as good as the Nvida 9600s which are now in the budget gpu range and are 2 generations behind Nvida's latest ofeerings.
Not to mention it supports DDR2 which isn't bad, but DDR3 1333 and higher that most latops are coming with now will show a nice perfomance boost.

Im not sure. I dont have Empire Total War so I am unable to see if it works. However, I imagine that it would work because the XPS M1730 is designed for gaming.

Power brick... twice as large as my M1710 adaptor. Yeah I prefer to use my mine as a 'desktop'... never leaves home. Dell's brought out their Alienware gaming machine now (17x series), no longer the XPS series anymore.... looks just as good, but the outside isn't as stylish without the brushed metallic stipple.

ahhhhh that's my fault, I meant all my anger towards him then not you anyways... I have an asus G51 with an x9100 clocked at 3.54ghz, ram clocked at 980mhz and a gtx 260m clocked at 605/1535/950 making it 7% faster than a stock 280m ... not a shit brick m1730. An so far no one has combined mobile sli with the new mobile i7s.. The fastest 17incher with mobile i7s is the np8690 and its based on calpella obviously with a 280m and gddr3 1333 ram.

Don't do it, without the warranty the m1730 is worth very little, as they're prone to failure, which in the situation where it does fail it will cost a small fortune to repair. I've had mine replaced 3 times, and i'm regretting buying the m1730. Its probably best to keep the much more powerful desktop.

Cpu wise the only upgrade in chipset and architecture is the corei7 series that was just released into notebooks a week ago. They got rid of the front side bus technology , now using hyperthreading the cpus are more power efficient. For example the cpu will control the speed now just all amd cpus have been doing, very similar. For example The 920XM (extreme revision)cpu is set at 2.0 and can fly up to 3.2 .

Actually, i7 wasn't released in notebooks a week ago. They've been available in actual 920, 940, and 975 forms in Sager laptops since August 2009. Alienware just got them in their new M15x laptop, so yes, they changed it to a LESS powerful 720XM - 920XM. Plus, It doesnt fly up to 3.2. It has a boost feature, and when set at high performance (in computer properties), can fly up to 3.2 GHz for maximum speeds.

Core i7 mobile cpus were released 2 weeks ago now.
Sagers clevoe based laptop np8690 uses the desktop core i7. That laptop has been offering the ability to use desktop cpus for years now. So back to the MOBILE Core i7 920qm, it cranks up to 3.2ghz depending on the stress on each core and the amount of cores which the application/game being used can except. This is how all the core i7 cpus work. The 920qm is the only one that can be set through BIOS to always run at 3.2.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but based on benchmarking results, the "GTX 260m" = 9800m gt = 8800m gtx, because the GTX 260m equipped asus g51 has been show to be outperformed (albeit slightly) by the Gateway P-7808u FX, with the 9800m gts and same q9000 processor.
The gt 240 is equal to about an 9700m gt according to notebookcheck's laptop graphics benchmark list.

I will correct you. The gtx260m in the G51 is underclocked in the bios by Asus to constrict the heat, many laptop manufacturers do this, clevo underclocks the 260m in the np8662 as well.Once it is set to stock Nvidia clocks, it is equal to a desktop 9800 gtx. A 9800gtx is an 8800gt set at higher clocks. The 8800m gtx = 9800m gt. Both have 96 pixel shader, clocked the same and same bus. A 9800m gtx is the same card as a gtx 260,both have 112 shaders, same bus but the 260m is clocked higher.CHEERS

How could the GT 240m ( GTS 240m does not exist!) be even remotely compared to the 9800m gt as in your original comment. The gt 240m has only 47 stream processors against the 97 of the 9800m gt, and the 3dmark06 difference (at OEM clock freq's) is around 4000. I'm not debating the validity of the 260m being little more than an further overclocked G92b, but i'm just stating that the GTX260m provides a better comparison to the 9800m gt/8800m gtx than the GT240m.

An a gt 240m is = to a 9700m gt.
A gts 250m is what I was referring to is equal to a 9800m gs. The 9800m gts is equal to an 8800m gt or a desktop 9600 gt. A 260m is clocked higher and has a whole new architecture meaning the 260m stock clocks would be pushing a 9800m gtx to it's final limit. A 9800m gt is pathetic, it scores high 8k in 3dmark while a stock nvidia clocked 260m can hit high 9k to 10 k and can be pushed to hit 12 plus k like mine is set at.

actually the p8 series is the same as the t series and x series. The only difference between them is the heat. P series is all 35nm as the x series cpus are 45nm. Read up buddy. The archistecture is exactly the same so between them it is a battle of clock speeds. ROFL and how do you stick the q series in there. Quad is a completely new story, it wont have a big effect unless the game supports quad, otherwise its back to clock speeds. DDR3 ram is proven not to offer an advantage over ddr2 yet.

Damn in just little over two years even that thing is pretty outdated. That's why i wouldn't spend a lot of money on a notebook gaming rig, because you can't upgrade the gpu and you are pretty much stuck with it for the life of that laptop.

how is it outdated huh? It can have up to a dual 8800m gtxs and an x9100 core2extreme that can be overclocked easily to a steady 3.51ghz. That setup alone scores a good 13,000 in 3dmark06.

The Core 2 Extreme is outdated now All the the P8xxx series will out perform it. The Q9xxx mobile series will beat it hands down and the new Core ix mobile series will simply mop the floor with it.
The Geforce 8800m's are as good as the Nvida 9600s which are now in the budget gpu range and are 2 generations behind Nvida's latest ofeerings.
Not to mention it supports DDR2 which isn't bad, but DDR3 1333 and higher that most latops are coming with now will show a nice perfomance boost.

Power brick... twice as large as my M1710 adaptor. Yeah I prefer to use my mine as a 'desktop'... never leaves home. Dell's brought out their Alienware gaming machine now (17x series), no longer the XPS series anymore.... looks just as good, but the outside isn't as stylish without the brushed metallic stipple.
