  • i've always kind of seen kabuki actors as... dolls. they look like beautiful porcelain dolls to me.

  • おかま

  • I'm sure I saw Dojoji performed by Nakamura Fukusuke, it was gorgeous

  • the transformation is incredible both physically and psychologically: white cream only to wipe out.

  • 2:05 - 2:16

  • bodycontrol!

  • If you want a less, whitier but ickier substance for white face, use bird poop but rice powder is thinner and not whitier that bird poop.

  • they look like ghosts!

  • dojoji and sagi happen to be one o fthe best kabuki plays i've ever seen

  • genius!

  • i want to know what the white stuff is made of

  • most likely rice powder...so I have heard

  • Oshiroi, the white makeup is made up of a white coloring. I think titanium dioxide and zinc are mostly used for that. Then water and glycerin. I'm sure there are some other things used as well.

In the past it used to be made with white lead, which would ruin your skin and could even kill you.

  • "In the past it used to be made with white lead, which would ruin your skin and could even kill you. "

That's true. A variant of that was used by Queen Elizabeth I.

  • @lovelyirene2001 her problem was arsenic actually.

they died of pulminary complications as a result

Oshiroi including white lead were brought into Japan from China.

People in old Japan used to believe that it makes the kabuki-actors and geisha look more beautiful, however it is poisonous.

Since 1934, Oshiroi including white lead has been banned in Japan.

Nowaday modern Oshiroi's ingredients has no great difference with modern cosmetics.

  • I don't thinkk that they are allowed to use that type with the zinc and titanium...it causes wrinkles...but its safe...unlike the lead which you mentioned

  • from italy

i'm francesca from italy and i'm very intresting about the different from italian theatre and asia.

  • What a pleasure to see Tamasaburo again, if only for a couple of minutes. I don't want to say he's the best, but, he's the best.

  • The actor is just amazing :)

But I really have a question:

Is there some way to order this White make up and red for the eyes? The Theater make-up Iam using now, isn't as white as the make up from a Kabuki actor :) an answer would be really helpful! ^-^

  • I went to a costume party as a tachiyaku... I put on white clown make up... visit my hi5, it is un my profile and there you can see, the photos

  • The white make up is rice powder. Try researching more about it and searching for it on the internet.

I don't know much about it but I did find out a bit more about matcha so I could make pastries with it.

  • I love Tamasaburou.

    He is a great artist.

  • thanks for these.

  • i've watched this

    ten times

    and will watch

    it more!

  • I like his little foot-steps at 2:06^^

  • Me too :D hehe

  • is tamasaburo the actor that dance before sharaku's prints appear? which type of obi is that one...like a ribbon?

  • that is a butterfly obi. if that is what your are talking about. or there is also the darari which is the like hanging one.

  • the music of the play...obviously the rythm that the shamisen gives is awesome and i didnt know so bright colours could exist in a kimono

  • what means Dojoji?

  • the Dojo Temple in Wakayama prefecture (near Osaka)

  • mh... what Tamasaburo said at the end is very interesting.. now I understand the intension of kabuki. Before that i asked some japanese, why so many men look like women... I tought, that is not normal.. sorry

  • thank you so much for sharing, this actor is really amazing. It would be such a favor to him if the quality of the video could be better.
