Y'know this was an interesting movie, more so for anything than for the fact that a lot of decidedly fairly bright individuals see no problem whatsoever to have themselves perhaps permanently identified with a job at a parking lot. A PARKING LOT! I blame it on the 90's slacker ethos which I, myself, probably propagated to some extent.. Eternity can't be bothered to fart on the slacker ethos it is so unworthy of further discussion. Otherwise good flick for 1988.
Saw it on Saturday with 5 other friends it was great loved it , when u watch the trailer it looks crap but wen ur there watching it its soo amazing. You can find it on fillmsi.co.cc by the way. Great film.
@dudeXthisWaSsoTONYx looks like we got a capitalist over here, boys. you know what to do *a bunch of burly men descend upon u as the camera fades to black*
@toastnuances yeah I'm SO afraid of someone who uses empty threats behind a computer screen. Perhaps if you left your mom's basement once in a while, you could BE a rich white, or whatever race you are
@dudeXthisWaSsoTONYx nope, social mobility is dead and has been for a hundred years :( I hope when you reflect on had bad you got merc'd in this conversation you think "dude this was so owny"
This movie is an exploration into human nature. It was amazing. These boys are incredibly smart, and they only reason they're not out there shaking up the world, is because they see wants wrong with it, and refuse to be a cog in the great machine.
can someone give me a def of "hipster" for me? And why do people like defining so much? Do i want to know what a hipster is so that i can shout "Look a hipster" and be proud of myself that i found one more concept to distinguish people ? Do i want to be that stupid? No! So dont give me that definition.
Dear hipster-haters: Make a doc about your job. If it's at least as good as this movie, I'll watch it. Especially if you end up as the senior curator for the Museum of Modern Art or teaching at MIT or something.
But I guess if you can't interest anyone in something you've done, and you're not going anywhere, it's pretty funny to just call these guys hipsters.
@Spartanoffaith You lost me there. Not all of them, but a few of the guys in the parking lot doc went on to pretty impressive things, like MIT and MoMA. Like I said, if it's a hipster-thing, make a better doc about your job and your work-friends and I'll watch it.
Enough with all the hipster hate. You're not achieving anything by putting yourself on some pedestal above everyone else, and saying "Look at those fucking hipsters, don't they suck, all pretentious and shit." You sound like a jackass.
@jasezer if there was ever a good reason to hate on a hipster, it's those of them with their pretentious bullshit. how does one deal with how that makes them feel? sure, just join the club and talk pretentious crap about them.
I'd say 'hipster' misses the mark by a mile. I'd say the young men in this doc are dyed-in-the-wool intellectuals. If they were hipsters, there'd be a lot more white-leather studded belts and shit-music.
Just saw this on Netflix. Potentially the most pretentious group of people I've ever seen. Basically a group of people that went to overpriced liberal schools and got useless anthropology degrees (one dude is even sporting a Haverford shirt)...they whine about how better they are than other parking attendant smart enough to get jobs in A/C...work in the word "existentialist" at one point to describe their job...pretty much a movie about hipsters coming to terms with their uselessness...
@McDiggy Ironic they're all so useless. Since if you watched the end, most of them went on to relatively successful careers at places other than the parking lot.
I saw this on PBS a few months ago, & it brought back A LOT of memories from the late 90's when I was working 3rd shift in a gas station/convenience store in Milwaukee.
I've been trying to find this on DVD, but I can't find it anywhere.
@TheParkingLotMovie Actually, about 5 minutes after I typed that comment, I decided to check on Amazon again, & I found a copy for sale there! I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
I worked at a beach parking lot in Santa Monica for 2 years (1987-1989) and ... wow... dealing with the public is a whole nother world... common sense is uncommon.
@MonkWarrior108 ya the lack of common sense at grocery stores is about the same. The worst is when people don't get the aisles are in numerical order they seem to think they're randomized.
Smug, crybaby assholes. Waste of good film.
