Written by Michael Jackson in 1980, was sang by Greg Philliganes first, then by Eric Clapton....and then it "came back" to Michael in his postumous album "Michael"
What's Greg Phillinganes doing back on lead vocals? Was there something wrong with Eric that night? God, this song has had so many wacky permutations between YMO, MJ, Greg, Eric, and Sakamoto, it gets nearly impossible to follow.
@mdelseta2004 I'm aware (well, technically the original performance was YMO in 1979, but that's semantics), but I was surprised that Greg is singing on the Clapton cover (as opposed to, you know, Clapton).
@Tenniru Sorry...the 1st VOCAL performance was by Philliganes, who, by chance, became MJ's keyboarder (I don't know if it's the right word) from the BAD Tour in 1987
@mdelseta2004 What's exciting is that the story goes farther back than that; there's actually a full version of MJ performing Behind The Mask recorded during the Thriller sessions, which wound up getting remixed and included on the "Michael" album last winter. Phillinganes was part of the Thriller sessions (if memory serves he was actually MJ's keyboardist as far back as the Jacksons' "Destiny", but I think I might be wrong on that detail). Greg's version is based off the Jackson arrangement.
@Tenniru That's because maybe "Behind The Mask" was supposed to be a part of "Thriller". If you buy the Special Edition of "Thriller" there's an interview with...I don't remember if it was Quincy Jones or Rod Temperton, but it says that Michael wrote TONS of songs that were supposed to be in "Thriller" and the choice was hard. Too bad they chose only 9. BTW, I thought MJ's version was based on the original
YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA version, that I listened before...
