I believe the "winking potato" is a mascot of the company that made the game. It appears in the arcade version of the ending, too.

I do believe the graphic was altered to show ZIG-01 was damaged, with clouds of debris drifting near it, before it is rescued.

I think CATS(the AYB guy) was defeated, though probably not destroyed, and you survived, though the zig(your ship) was badly damaged in the last battle, but one of the Earth Federation or whatever their name is(the good guys)'s ships(like the one you launch from at the start) came along and rescued you from certain death.

Then there's a wierd bit with a bunch of those random eggplant things dancing or something like thatO_o

I got a differant ending. Right when you kill that weird ass purple tank, a pod flys out, if you had killed everything around it, youre homing shots blow it up. It says some shit about CATS being dead and you saving the universe.

Forget that - it seems that difficulty seems to modify the ending. Maybe there is a different ending in easy and other in medium. Try that and say 'what happen'.

Believe me, there are worse endings.

And no, this is the best ending I've saw, the only word that appears is 'congratulations' (wow, oddly pronnounced right in a hell of bad grammar) and because of that can't be compared to other endings like in super mario bros where you get start a new quest (lol) but still best ending ever.

Why best ending? The combination of the music and the animations create an atmosfere of 'mission completed we can rest safely now peace will last forever'. The furby-thing blinking looks like a identificative element of the creators and so on.

Well, thinking better, the unique thing that it lacks is more engrish that makes combination with the intro and this should be a myth.
