  • @emmerage no one said "it was the past, get over it" and no one said it wasn't wrong.

  • @kjoneslol

Well, I wasn't actively attacking your ongoing diatribes, but since you seem so intent on taking my comment badly, I suppose I ought to respond in kind.

Your transparent politcs are borne out in comments such as:

"It's a lot like calling colonial Americans racists just because they had slaves. You're applying 21 century standards to centuries ago"

    or

"I wasn't saying slavery isn't evil, I was saying those that owned slaves in the 1800s can't be judged by us, the future"

  • @emmerage

It's a very convenient position to take subjectivity so far as to absolve yourself, or anyone else, of responsibility for things which happened in the past.

I believe all hegemonic powers should take responsibility for all people they have exploited to get into that position of power. That includes Anglos in the US and Australia, and NZ, as well as the very wealthy, politically powerful, etc. The everyday person who lives a comfy life owes a debt to the past.

  • @emmerage

I didn't absolve anyone from responsibility, I absolved the past from the childish blame game. You are as much to blame for everything as soon as the moment you are born. The difference between you and I is that I do not blame others in order to declare myself innocent, I share the guilt.

Quit pointing your finger and use it to make it better.

  • god. from the few words vesty says i just wanna punch him in his big smug Gob...

  • Great live version of this song. Missy adds a cool element to it...

  • Great live version of this song.

  • from little coons BIG coons grow

  • Kwoppiny mai waarbiny!! Mmmm, lovely, truly we all are waiting boodjaa nidja djurrep kaadidjiny

  • Damn missy Nailed this song man!

  • How hateful was Lord Vestey?

  • I wouldn't call it hate. Vestey wanted to do best for England; Lingiari wanted to do best for the Australians. It's just a matter of perspective.

  • Are you an indigenous Australian? Are you Australian? Do you have an understanding of Australian history? If you did, you would understand the underlying historical perspective of WHY his comments were hateful.

  • Answering yes to any of those completely voids your argument.

I don't see it that way at all. It must shock you to find someone thinks differently than you.

It's a lot like calling colonial Americans racists just because they had slaves. You're applying 21 century standards to centuries ago.

  • Our history is not the same as your history....This history was not centuries ago, .... it was in my lifetime.... before you make generalisations, you need to review the history that has been sung about....

  • And no... I'm not remotely shocked that you think differently to me? And again no, your answering yes to any of those questions, does not completely void my argument. People who are Australian and who are Indigenous have different feelings about our history, although it is doubtful that Indigenous Australians would ever take kindly to the opinions expressed by the likes of Lord Vestey.

  • Do you now view the opinions of colonial Americans in a positive light... that racism was acceptable then but it is not acceptable now? Racism and injustice is always heinous regardless of when in history it occurred.

  • You're still assuming I'm American.

Colonial Americans were not racist for owning slaves. Owning slaves was simply status quo at that time. You can't blame someone for doing something they didn't even know was wrong. Racism didn't evolve until the civil rights movement, in the U.S. anyway.

The English mentality at the time was similar. England was supreme, Australia was its servant. He didn't hate Australians, it was just his way of thinking. Worst you could say is that he is vain.

  • There is something very sad in your argument if you can not see the vaildity of present day people realising the past atrocities done by our forefathers. Its not about blame. It is acknowledgement and human rights! We need to recognise unfdavourable treatment of the past in order to move fprard with socialjustice. Saying that people did not 'know'they were being racist at the time is like keeping a blanket of repression covered over a culture.

  • I wasn't saying slavery isn't evil, I was saying those that owned slaves in the 1800s can't be judged by us, the future.

We know more now than they did back then and blaming them for not knowing what we know now is not fair.

In the Magna Carta it states: No freeman shall be taken, imprisoned, or in any other way destroyed, except by the lawful judgment of his peers.

I don't consider the future a lawful peer of the past.

  • as you posted... its all a matter of perspective....shame I don't agree with yours

  • Well your country's legal system does. Ever hear of an ex post facto law?

  • i think we beg to differ on this one. peace

  • and as much as law should be based on moral and ethical principal it is not always the case.

  • That's not what law is based on, but k. Flashy exits also work better when you actually exit, which entails, you know, not coming back.

  • we could really go on and on and on and on couldn't we? I'll leave the last word for you if that's what you would like........

  • Simply because person Y does not like person X's opinions, does not mean person X hates person Y. Again you're applying the future to the past. This is why ex post facto laws are illegal.

  • All history is the same.

  • LOL... sorry have to disagree with this, obviously you have found your ground and are unable to see another person's view. History is not the same, it always depends on the perspective. Little point in continuing the conversation really.

  • I couldn't agree more. It's all a matter of perspective.

  • well developed argument against Katholez. Thank you for posting!
