I was under the impression that it was a parallel metaphor between an unhealthy relationship and an alcohol addiction. Sort of like comparing the two and coming to the conclusion they might just be one in the same. Her songs are always so brilliantly written this one feels like it weaves in and out of the two concepts and I get a sense that the person in the song loses track of which one she’s taking about by the end. Is it the alcohol or him?
such a melodic voice! the song brings up a picturesque scene of the beach and over to the right a bunch of rocks and cave wtih the waves crashing upon it or them.
I recently discovered this song by accident, and I'm glad I did. It's true that the 1st 8 measures remind me of "Bennie and the Jets", but the poetry of Sara's lyrics keep me listening. Long story short, it's the ambivalence of being addicted to unequal love and not being able to shake the addiction like it was alcohol or drugs. She does a good job with the double meanings in the words, plus she's a damn good singer. This converges so well harmonically, I love the sound!
no its not about a realationship with a man. if you listen, it explains a love for alcohol. she works hard for so she can have it, and the title odviously. its discreetly hinting abt it through out the whol song. and she never spacificly mentions any man
*to add to my earlier comment * "the beautiful sound of love coming down" the sound of a drink getting poured. "if i stay" (keep drinking) please someone tell me you get it now xD cuz that is what its about.

LUV THE SONG! I was thinking about it, well, listen-thinking, and being my nerdy self, analyzed the lyrics. I thought it was about an addictive relationship...but she could be singing about a drink called 'Love on the Rocks'. Could be taken either way, and THAT IS WHY IT IS AWEEEEESOMEEEE!!! ^^
It's funny because I had almost the same thought processing there. In addition to that, I was sort of thinking of how, when something is "on the rocks", it's usually in trouble... so possibly a failing relationship?
Why so perfect??!

I can relate if she's singing about a relationship. That's the frame of mind right now so I completely enjoyed the relation.

It's called "love on the rocks" because her relationship is failing, and she seems to be drinking because of it ("If this bottle could talk...").

Well....I see it as a love that is "going down" and therefore "on the rocks" (cooling down = freezing)

@isnessx3 I thought maybe a combination. A failing relationship that drove her to drink.

I don't believe it's live. I got this via the CD so... I'm guessing it isn't.

I'm guessing that if it were live, there would probably be screaming and stuff...
I'm positive it isn't.

@MusicTran1 There are two different versions, one from the Little Voice Album (this), and one from her earlier album Careful Confessions.
