No, Hendrix never said "I don't know..ask Billy Gibbons/Rory Gallagher/Phil Keaggy". This is one of those completely undocumented persistent myths, as if it makes Gibbons/Gallagher/Keaggy, great guitarists all, any more 'legit'.
the hendrix quote never happened.if you do some research the closest to that comment was when hendrix was on dick cavett and was asked that question in a slightly different form. hisresponse was a guy in texas named billy gibbons. though i will say rory is the best i have heard by far. my all time favorite!
My gosh, the f'ing dumbass comments on this post. First - Rory never was "not accepted" by the Stones, he left the poorly structured audition because he didn't like the feel of the Stones, he was a frontman, he already had his own tour dates in Japan, and he ALWAYS marched to his OWN beat. And the Stones are incredible, w or w/o Rory. Keef & Co didn't need a third front star, Rory would have been a bad fit for this band. And as far as the Rolling Stone Top 100, many worthy stars arent in.
You can't compare Rory and Jimi, they both took the blues in their own direction. Jimi did it psycheldelic and Rory went more funk and groovy. They're both completely amazing and out of this world.
Even though the sound quality isn't as great as some of the other bad pennies, this is my favourite version.Rory gallagher at his very best! R.I.P Rory.
o jesub..now i realise god DID walk umusust us...and stufff...too much alchol....he rocked like a mofo...and people think clapo had the blues.,..pffffffffffffffffff

Rory was the real deal!! A TRUE musician. He was very much loved in Europe. I had the pleasure of seeing him live in a small town in Germany (1974). There was a snow storm that night but the little hall was packed. He must have played for 3 hrs. He was amazing! RIP brother!
boy dont say that rory was under rated.rory sold more than 30 million records.and even jimmi hendrix used to say that he was the most virtuous guitar man.any where he went he was a mayor star.and still i can see that a lot of young boys when they discover him they trip with his music
5 Stars, Its hard to believe that he never made the top 100 guitar players in Rolling Stone Magazine! Just goes to prove what people buy their garbage. Hendrix, Page, Clapton knew along with the people that went to see him play in Ireland every year! RIP Rory. Thanx for the memories. Guitar God!!!!!
the only guitar man ive heard that could be compared to rory is steve ray vaughn both they were extremely dirty playing and so so genious. full force.
When Jimi Hendrix was asked "how does it feel to be the greatest guitarist in the world?" he replied - "im not sure, you'd have to ask Rory Gallagher"
Rory always looked like someone you grew up with, went to school with, or lived near. Just an ordinary kinda bloke, but such an extra-ordinary talented musician.
@GeorgeC2009 I think one thing that shows that is how he never bothered even dressing like a "rock star", just cheapo plaid shirts, jeans and denim jackets like me and my mates all used to wear, even before we heard him. The "entertainment" world is all arse about in my opinion.
Rory hadn't made his first record before Jimi had died. Jimi referred to Terry Kath of Chicago as the greatest guitarist in the world and was quoted saying "he is better than me."
And to kevster1340, Rory didn't join the Stones because they themselves said he was too good for them.
@brickman550 it is my favorate quote by any human ever...so humble, and also,so true...tho hendrix and rory where kinda different if you think about it...JUST TWO AMAZING GUITAR PLAYERS
@brickman550 hendrix said that about literally everyone and youre definatally wrong because i dont think he ever even said it about rory.... but no disrespect to rory cause hes my favorite of all time, im just trying to clear that up.
I think I saw Rory about 4 or 5 times or so in the late 1970's he was simply brilliant. How one guitarist can sound like two I will never know. He was so under rated.
While I would defend Hendrix to the end about him being the "greatest" the feeling of the intro to this makes Rory climb up my list as one of the best ever.
no words can be said to do justice to how i feel about rory and his playing. he was an insane player, he had such a grip on what he was doing. he was an awesome person too, he didnt let his ego take over. i still havnt done him justice with this dumb youtube comment. RIP, i wish i could have met you man, rock on
hey.. c'mone guys... Ijust can't believe you could be so callous.... good blues musicians come and go... Fantastic playing by THE fender bender of all time.
I think he played as well in the studio, but live he had more time to extend numbers and improvise, plus the atmosphere and excitement affected him and came through in his playing. On the other hand, his subtlety came through more on the studio versions, especially the more introspective numbers that didn't get played live much. I think his live and studio work highlight different qualities and I enjoy both equally.
Gotcha. Took it literally due to sooo many posters who are newbies to Rory. The prob is that on this side of The Pond we are less concerned with talent and more concerned with image and disposability. And you wonder why we have sooo many reality tv shows and why you even know the name Sanjaya??? LOL Actually, it's sad. Anyway, rock on Laura, you obviously appreciate talent when you hear it.
Inventive and unique as always, listening to Rory always give me a healthy rush, a natural high; I wish he'd kept the keyboards though to balance the sound.
yeah out of the commercial world he do it he hate commercial music (u2,and al that motherfuckers) fuck u2 fuck fuck he is commercial (this is a legend)
Rory will always be a favourite amongst guitarists, and people who like good honest music, anywhere in the world. Edge is famous cos he´s in a pop band and uses a delay pedal. gary Moore is famous cos he deserves it. Rory will always be a legend and sadly missed by anyone with a plectrum or an ear for a good tune.
3:09 ....yep pointing to monitor and holding a pick, hence the index finger! Y'know its criminal that this guy isn't more recognised, and is bypassed for so many other players who in some cases don't deserve it....Why are Gary Moore and Edge the most famous pickers form Ireland????
Naw--I've seen him do that a few times--Rory never had a mean or nasty bone in his body. All he's doing is pointing to his monitor with a pick on his index finger.
Rory Gallagher not on "Rolling Stone's" top 100 guitarists list? Makes me glad I've only bought 1 copy of it over 25 years..What penultimate ignorance.

Anyone with anything like a sound mind knows that Rorys guitar beats all the pseudo guitarists on the Rolling Stone list.
They are as wrong as all the billion flies that eat shit.
On the other hand Rory was number one on the Melody Maker list in the mid seventies. I think it was -74.

I first saw Rory live on that tour, so it's nice to remember the rawer sound that he had at that time.

Inventive and unique as always, listening to Rory always give me a healthy rush, a natural high; I wish he'd kept the keyboards though to balance the sound.

Y'know its criminal that this guy isn't more recognised, and is bypassed for so many other players who in some cases don't deserve it....Why are Gary Moore and Edge the most famous pickers form Ireland????
stratocastermojo 5 years ago
Naw--I've seen him do that a few times--Rory never had a mean or nasty bone in his body. All he's doing is pointing to his monitor with a pick on his index finger.

Rory Gallagher not on "Rolling Stone's" top 100 guitarists list? Makes me glad I've only bought 1 copy of it over 25 years..What penultimate ignorance.

yea, i can't believe he's not on there...
that list is total BS...
