So sad. Houston METRO could have bought these lines for a song, and put a commuter line on it. This would have saved us millions of dollars in construction costs; instead, they decided to widen I-10 to a mega-highway. Really sad.
I distinctly recall tanks being hauled long this line to the Port of Houston, to ship off to Iraq, for the first Gulf War. It really has been a long time.
The MKT is long gone. The Park 10 development is still there. So strange, seeing the two together.
...no graftti! NONE WHATSOEVER!!! Wow. Truly the good old days... Nice quest: what's the most recent video you know of a freight train completely without grafitti?
What memories of seeing this and other similar trains @ i-10 and Gessner.I love seeing the MKT caboose.I would watch thesae run a redball once they got to Fry Rd back in the 70's.
Awesome video! I had never thought too much of the MKT green and yellow paint scheme preferring the previous dark red, but this video might have changed my mind. Too bad the track is now gone, also, just to widen some freeway.
Enjoyable video! While growing up my parents would drive from San Antonio (pre-I 10) to Houston to visit. US90 would parallel the Katy for about the last 30 or so miles into Houston. I always enjoyed watching for the trains. As I recall in the early 60's the Katy retired the block signals along this line. The track was bad and got worse until the Katy received a government guaranteed loan for track rehabilitation during the 70's. Now, even the track is gone to make room for a wider I 10.
NOCOTTON...let me tell you why. They were not needed really. It is easier to have your conductor in the power to communicate with the engineer. Plus the conductor can make sure the engineer isn't falling asleep...missing signals etc. Not to mention you don't get thrown around as much in the head end.
I heard a familliar gostlly sound a katy 5 chime whistle a while back so I raced down to the track and saw the UP 951 E8 go through on a buisness train with a katy whistle a ghostly sound to say the least
man I could not agree with you more the Katy and the Mop were the railroads of my child hood me and my dad used to railfan them together man I miss those railroads but especilly the Katy.. I loved those Katy whistles.. we lived near the tracks and I would practiclly tear down the screen door as a kid to get out there to see that Katy train pass!! RIP miss Katy
my love for the katy goes way back as my grandpa and my dad worked for the katy have many photos and rode with them in town and out of town gry houston texas.
thats cool mine was seein the katy and the mo pac come through my home town I used to railfan both as a kid the katy had a branchline to Dallas from here now gone and they came in jointlly out of Ft Worth too through here .. now all we have is the UP and KCS bought the old Santa Fe line through here too
WOW... never thought I'd see Katy like this on youtube! Not only do you get that roaring S-5T horn at the crossing, but a "hello" on the rear mounted S-25! Nice!
Awesome! Thanks man keep up great work there.

@timothywgray1 Can't really blame anything except for the beancounters and jackasses in government and the sheeple that always vote for them.

This is an excellent video! The horn of the trains sounded like, at 0:09, like it was crying out from the past. What is that type of horn anyway?

I think UP should have dug one of those old katy whistles and put it on the heritage MKT unit it would have been really appropriate

Why was the caboose done away with? Grew up seeing them & never knew why they were phased out. Thought it would be a pretty nice job.

Isn't it sad what the City of Houston turned that line into.

Actually, TxDOT was behind that, but it's still sad.
