  • And this is his desrtuctive period???.....I just can't beleive what I'm hearing!

  • sounded like he started to play "Smoke On The Water" at the end of the vid.

  • Nice to witness this after just reading about him in the days before You Tube.

  • Looks like he's playing through an Acoustic head, but what's the cab?? Doesn't look like the 360 cabinet...?

  • In conversations about the bass guitar, there is before Jaco & after Jaco. He truly is the Greatest Bass Player whom ever lived!!!

  • i m vergus , the friend jaco has in new york...well thats was....

and was good at that time...

    we live for ever..

    regards

    vergus

  • At 5:57 I was like " Down in front!!" then I realised that Im watching this on youtube.

  • this mas was so awesome...i love this song! i wish to be at least half as good as he was lol

  • 2:00 - 2:20 is he borrowing themes from the firebird suite?

  • Of course it's the B. O. D.!!!

If you have 2 ask you'll never know!!

  • Remember guys, after he removed the frets from his jazz, the markings remained so it could look in such low q that it is fretted. I think that is Jaco's original bass of doom o.O

  • @RatchetGUN Yes, that is the bass of doom.

  • @zao144 no its not that wa stolen way before 1986 when this was recorded

  • @truebass yes it is. It was stolen in from a park bench in 1986.

  • @zao144 wrong bass of doom has black pick ups

  • @truebass And you see a different color in this video? With all the lighting, I think not. Plus you were wrong about the year so that leads be to believe you dont know what your talking about.

  • @zao144

Actually, truebass is right( at least about the bass). This is not the bass of doom, but a different fretless bass Jaco used for his first tour with guitarist Bireli Lagrene. This clip is taken from one of their concerts.

  • @Musicenthusiasm he's not actually.

  • @zao144

This is NOT the bass of doom. End of story. He did play other basses too you know...

  • @Musicenthusiasm Yes it is. End of story because you say so? ha I have studied this man and his work for a long time. I know what the Bass Of Doom looks and SOUNDS like. (Really? He played other basses? No way. *sigh*)

  • @zao144 yeah...imagine jaco being a wreck sleeping on a bench with his bass. so sad, bro

  • @SaintUdnitz I know. From stadium shows to a park bench, sad. The Creature will do that to ya.

  • @RatchetGUN in one interview he said he bought the bass without frets, in another interview he said he removed them himself. will saty undisclosed I guess :)

  • じゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこじゃこ〜

  • Fantastic! I discover "firebird" by Igor Strawinsky. Jaco the great!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @langerzoriginal is it true that he took the frets out of a fender jazz bass, and went on from there?

  • @dacuffo Jaco is the reason why there is Fender defretted basses today =3

  • @RatchetGUN there were already fretless Fender basses in '70

  • It's fretted.

  • @GassyMaskz

    Do your ears not work?

Clearly this is a fretless bass, if I ever heard one.

Also note his vibrato (parallel to the strings) at certain points.

  • in his worse time...was still better than anyone else playing electric bass !

    simple:the best.

    cheers.

  • @langerzoriginal .. i know its bright lights and the plastic is reflective but it does seem too white even so...maybe you have a point.

  • Lo máximo!!

  • cool how he breaks into Blackbird byt the beatles around the end.

  • Jaco es LA MÚSICA

    pura inspiració!!

  • jaco pastorius es fue y sera el mejor bajista de esta tierra

  • Does anyone know when and where this gig happen?

  • Well, seeing that a lot of people seem to be quite preocupied about Jaco's mental state and don't mind speculating as to how he might be feeling or what drugs (prescription or not) he may have taken, etc...To them I'd like to say just one thing:

Jaco's worse was still better than almost anybody else's best...

Having said all that, on this video he sounds great to me. The audience only seems to get into it at the end which is a bit of a shame.

  • This is later stuff for him, that bass is one that he got after he blew it all up his nose. This is by no means his best playing. there's before '79 and after '79. After '79 there's a steady decay, but that's just a part of the music. He didn't have much time after this.

  • Legend!

  • I am spending an afternoon with Jaco thanks to the beauty of youtube. Compared to other performances I've seen of Jaco, it seems he may have been on lithium by this time. His demeanor is subdued but I agree with those who praise his playing on this video. Jaco could play better than ANYONE when he was of the mind to do so.

  • Lithium or no Lithium he could still play the bass as well as anything I have seen and he is the greatest bass player ever.

  • It's great to relate to other Jaco fans. I am appalled at the number of BASS GUITAR PLAYERS I've met who know nothing about Jaco. I feel that he contributed so much to the instrument and the way it is approached that EVERY BASS GUITAR PLAYER should know Jaco's work.

  • This is one of the best solos I've heard Jaco play.

  • lol. am I the only one who heard the "Blackbird" quote (ala The Beatles)

  • no. it's from his album "word of mouth" dipshit.

  • Er, I don't think so , dude. You're probably just the last one who heard it. Congratulate yourself all the same....

  • sorry. I'm just getting in to Jaco. I don't own that album, so I didn't mean to sound like a jerk or anything. my apologies. I wasn't aware that he covered "Blackbird" on word of mouth. I thought it was just an intro he used to this song this one time, not as a combination of his version of "Blackbird" and Chromatic Fantasy.

  • yep he totally combined them in a mindblowing array of notes and passion.

Jaco (i've heard some people call him yaco... heh. nobody should make that mistake in public.)

    okay i'm done

  • It's pronounced Jock-O, like jock-strap....heh.

I've heard some people call him Hawk-O..?

But that would never happen to Zawinul.

  • i know how his name is pronounced! it was Jocko before it was Jaco!

  • from jocko conlon, an old baseball umpire...

    it´s all on milkowski´s book

  • @mono1967 Thanks.

  • i don't think you're a dip s**t, but that is one of his standard quotes. PLEASE continue getting into Jaco, that's the important thing! Yes that was blackbird, but keep listening.

  • el padre del bajo, una legenda...

sin jaco el bajo electrico no seria el mismo

  • who is that bassplayer,

    what band is he in?

  • Mister Jaco Pastorius. He had composed several solo albums and consisted a several bands, but he is best known for his solo works.

  • i think he was in "weather report".

  • I think what some critics mean when they say "Hendrix of Bass" They are referring him being such a pioneer of the instrument in that he showed the masses what is possible on his particular instrument and wrote such unbelievable compositions on the instrument. Though gatton in such an unsung master and to me one of the baddest ever to pick up the guitar.

  • GRANDI JUGATORE

  • pure gold what you have here!!!

  • I saw Stanley Clarke Basically knock some of this solo off the other night with the Allman Brothers Band.

  • Stanley Clarke is a master of the acoustic bass. On the electric bass he shouldn't be considered as an innovator anymore as his playing is very repetitive and relies on a few fast patterns ALL THE TIME.

  • Jaco shows why he is the best bass player ever.

  • Nice video. Please post the whole thing if you can.

  • yes, it seems to be Bireli Lagrene

  • That is one of the most dynamic and all encompassing Jaco solos on YT. Perhaps ever filmed. All of you Jaco d0oubters, he's the Hendrix of the bass.

    listen closely

  • he is decidedly NOT the hendrix of bass. if he can be compared to anyone, the danny gatton of bass would be more appropriate.

hendrix, while great, did not have this level of technical virtuosity.

  • Loving the blackbird at around 5:26 and again at 6:00.

  • O yeah! Very Good

  • for those wondering, he starts playing chromatic fantasy RIGHT at 4:00
