My 2003 Audi A4 130 hp Multitronic automatic returnes easily 50 mpg at 75 mph. And has just over 150000 on the clock and still driving very well. ANd sure by American standards that might be small horse power but it has a lot of torque which makes for very relaxed driving. Go and take a spin in a modern Turbo Diesel.
In Europe Diesels have well surpassed 50 U.K mpg several years ago! The new vw golf bluemotion is due in Europe later this year and will have a claimed combined 74 U.K mpg, meaning in reality on long runs will probably see over 80 mpg.Show me any prius that will do that! It's a shame the American car companies sued the U.S government to prevent them from making laws to decrease car fuel consumption! Europe leads the world with car fuel efficiency, and there is no reason America can't do the same
