I was there in 2006 and all of the literature says there is a height difference of 50 - 75 feet between the 2 oceans. That's why you see the ships rising up or dropping down significant distances. I saw it with my own eyes and there's multiple sets of locks. Look it up!
Also, you can take a trans-continental bus trip for $1.50!
One of the big problems is the mixing of Pacific sealife with Atlantic. The barrier to saltwater life is the fresh water from lake Gantun solves this eco-problem. Not a problem? Wait until sea snakes starty showing up in Florida. Other canal proposals were all sea level or close. The passage through fresh water is brief or non existant. Sea life will migrate. We were lucky none of the others were built.
Interesting simulation! Please have a look at the Diagonal Lock simulations on my channel - this is a new lock technology designed for inland waterways.
You people amaze me. The water is the same level on boith sides, it is the difference in the tides that cause the problems. The oceans are \connected to each other so how can they be at different seal levels. Seal level is a term not an actual elevation.
LOL you'd be surprised what 8 inches can do. It certainly wouldn't be a gentle current by any stretch. But yes environmental reason would probably be upmost in the minds.
Its possible that he might have been talking about Operation Plowshare back in the 50's and 60'. They thought big back then, like moveing mountains and creating harbors and canals with nuclear devices. One of the ideas was a longer and wider canal through Nicaragua nicknamed the Pan-Atomic Canal. Fortunately the funding dried up and common sense found its way into the program and the whole mess was shelved. Besides as I said earlier the sea levels are different so a level canal is impossible.
Not to mention an 8 inch difference in sea level on either side of the Canal. The Pacific side is 20 centimeters or 8 inches higher then the Atlantic (in other words sea level is not level for every body of water LOL) so a canal such as the Suez is out of the question. I know 8 inches doesn't sound like much but it is when your thinking oceans.
An 8 inch difference over a distance of 50 miles is nothing. All that means is that you would have a very, very small current going from one ocean to another...not a big deal. The ecological problems are much more significant.
a sea level canal would have been not only expensive, it would have taken longer to build and because of the differences in tide, salinity and some other ecological related factors it could have affected the ecosystem. There would have died probably more people due to the unstability of the soil whith unpredictable landslides. english is not my native language.
It's so cool how waterway locks work! We're actually studying waterway locks in school so I had to look this vid up! I wasn't expecting them to look like this! AWSOME!
It's not that difficult. There is a mountain range with not so high mountains that ships have to go over. What the locks do is take the ship step by step over the mountains with the help of water. The video shows the locks elevating the ship. There are other locks that take the ship down the same way.
This is why the Panama Canal is a locks canal and not a level canal. To build a level canal they would need nuclear power and it's impossible.
what on earth are you talking about? What does nuclear power have to do with a level canal? Or being impossible?
A level canal simply means its _level_. As in, sea level. It would have required alot of digging and probably have been prohibitively expensive to build, but wouldn't have the modern constraints of size and traffic flow the locks are facing today.
dude, its really simple. there are reserve tanks on the sides, and the water gets extracted from there into the locks. once the ship passes through, the water goes back to the reserve tanks. this was brought about because it used to be taken from the nearby lake, but i guess it caused problems, so they introduced this method instead, this way, the same water can be reused over and over.

I just posted a video of the NORWICH cruising thru the canal if you would like to see it.

Excellent animation enables clear understanding of how the concept works.

This shows tugs fore and aft but no mules at the sides. What keeps the vessel stable in the lock?
