"The History Boys" is both an immeditely enjoyable and on another level richly subtle piece of work. Alan Bennett is British through and through, and one of the piece's most important subtexts is the rehabilitation of gay British writers like Noel Coward and Terence Rattigan.
What is remarkable about the history boys is how tolerant and civilised they are as symbolised by Scrips.
The straight kid that all the gays yearn for is so nice that when he gets into Oxford he is ready to give everyone around him a piece of what they want. He embraces his young classmake. He's going to give the old school master a little grope if that's what he wants. And he encourages the young school master to overcome his fears and have a go with him if that is what he wants. Nice guy!
I just love the lack of PC banter and clouting round the head with rolled up exercise books. lol, great movie and exact reproduction of the times. Bye bye blackbird in assembly is quite moving.
A gay teen singing "Bewitched, Bothered, Bewildered," in the middle of class to the, apparently straight, school heartthrob in front of all his peers is an "exact reproduction of the times?" He'd get the shit kicked out of him! History Boys is a lot of things, most of them great, but realistic it is not.
Just because you cannot personally connect with a show or the shows plot, do not dismiss it as unrealistic and make judgments about it before you know the entire background of the show.
As for being realistic, it most certainly is. This movie reminds me of many events in my life, especially my best friend who was a teacher, and died. And I also had a tight group of friends like these boys that always accepted me. And I have had many straight friends I have had crushes on, yet they have never kicked the shit out of me for it.
Whether or not he is gay, bi or closeted, or straight, no one really knows. That depends on how the actor plays the part. And don't forget, this is NOT AMERICA, Europe is a very different place. The school system in Europe is extremely different than that of ours in the US!!! This is a completely different world than what you know.
Clearly you do not understand this show at all. That is the whole point of the show. ACCEPTANCE of each other. For god's sake, HECTOR is gay and they accept it! This is a tight group of friends, and that's an understatement even. These boys have a deep bond, a connection and a love for each other. Everyone knows that Posner is in love with Dakin!!! Dakin doesn't care; his character feeds off of attention.
I'd give a lot of money to have Sam Barnett sing this song, with that look, to me. The "come hither" look as he sings, "Worship the trousers that cling to him..." ... zomg - chills! A boy can dream...
I really love this movie. One of my favorite movies or if not THE MOST FAVORITE MOVIE. This has great scriptwriting...very smart and intelligent. Hope film makers would produce great movies with intelligent script writings.
Gosh, this is a brilliant sequence. I thing I'm in love with Dakin too... *sigh* I love Sam Barnett's rendition of this song. The way he says "trousers" to make it sound so provocative is just gorgeous. Brilliantr lads all of them.
Every time I watch this movie I fall a little more in love with Jamie Parker! *sigh* And of course he's the only one of the Boys whoo;s married! Grrr. And is it me or does he have the most beautiful hands?...
I fell in love with Scripps... I always loved Bennett (my mum saw the first EVER Beyond the Fringe in Edinburgh and passed on the love to me - I'm hideously jealous) He was at school near me, in Edinburgh!
i love this film,i love Posner ,and i love this song very much~~~
