The average f4 Phantom currently in service is better equipped and maintained than the mig29. German F4s have APG65/AIM120 and the Japanese planes are also upgraded.
I agree with xxwzaebd. Phantom is old plane, but very univerzal, practical and powerfull plane still. What kind of plane was using from 60s to this days... I know only Mig-21.... And if you see Phantom on sky, it is beautifull with huge sound and smoke lines :-)
People argue that American planes are better than Russian planes or that Russian plane are better than American planes, when does this shit stop. The F-4 Phantom is a good plane, it was a good in Vietnam,but I wouldn't underestimate the MIG-29, in my opinion I dont think the F-4 could really stand to the MIG-29, the MIG-29 is more modern and Sophisticated. Maybe the F-4 with its maneuverability and can carry more, the thing is the MIG-29 has six pylons,six weapon stations and can carry three IR or Intra Red homing air to air missiles on each station. The F-4 can shoot down the MIG-29 if it has a good pilot.
The mig29 is, at speed and altitude, not better than the F-4 performancewise.I remember seeing its performance envelope chart back in the '90s on a local magazine. At close combat, it will lose energy earlier than the F-4; at BVR, it has little chance. Most mig29s cannot fly because of airframe corrosion etc. The F-4 served much longer while also flown 10 times more each year;still it remains in service.
FYI, with over 1500 flying hours in the F/RF-4 and over 2000 in the F-16 (Blocks 15,25,30,&40) I can tell you this: The F-4 is awesome but I liken it to a souped up pick-up truck. VERY fast in a straight line, capable in its mission (it's old school technology). BUT, the F-16 is EXTREMELY capable both air-to-air and air-to ground and in its multi-role capabilities. And it just keeps getiing better. There is no comparison between the two.
pennridgeboy is right, i'v done extensive research on the F - 4 Phantom and it has always had gun capability. It wasnt until the E model when the Phantom had it's external mounted 20mm multibarrel gun.

In a recent exercise a modernized F-4E AUP managed to 'kill' a Rafale. Fifty years after its first flight the Phantom can still fight and beat much newer aircraft. It is Phabulous.
This plane speaks for it's self. well built and was able to take abuse and keep flying. Just an Incredible fighter and bomber. The Marines would use the fighter as a bomber and also cover at the same time. over 5000 were built and still used by many countries. Proof positive that you build some great it will last!!
I spent 14 years crew chiefing this beautiful lethal "phast mover". Got the Phantom bites to prove it. I can still hear those J-79"s howling on final approach. Sounded like some prehistoric beast howling in the night! God I miss her.
Hands down, the absolute best spectator aircraft ever flown by the Thunderbirds. The shear size, grace and incredible sound of these "Phabulous Phantoms" were a sight to behold. The F-16 show is good but it will never top this brute of an aircraft.

The one weakness it had in terms of armament was it's lack of a gun in the F4A-D variants. They fixed it in 1968 in the E model. All in all, a legendary fighter.
There was also a planned F-4 variant capable of reaching Mach 3. The MiG31 could have been totally beaten by such a variant since the MiG31 is only barely maneuverable. (I tried out the MiG31 on FS2000 and it was more like an airliner)
The MiG29 in any variants has no chance against an F-4 Phantom. The F-4 is powerful in all situations while the MiG29 was designed for intercepting lower speed targets such as bombers. It loses energy very quickly if it gets involved in a close combat with an F-4,let alone an F-16.Thus,F-4 was more than 3 decades ahead of its time and is still being used by the world's best air forces-Korean and Japan,for example.
Had the honor of being around these aircraft on the U.S.S. Midway in Japan. The pilots, support crew and the ship's crew loved these...loaded with sidewinder missiles, they were amazingly effective, for only 6 million bucks a shot...sweet - a truly lovely aircraft.
With updated technology, our military could greatly benefit by re-introducing them, in an updated version, if we only had a congress that could rationally think.

The israelis, were working on improved Phantom they called it the Super Phantom it had F-15 engines and the F-15 avionics and radar package. When McDonnell Douglas found out about it they were worried that it would cut into the sales of it's F-15's and made Israel stop all development on it even though the Super Phantom was a better aircraft than the Eagle.
This Aircraft was the spitfire of the 60s and 70s Australia had them on loan waiting delivery of the F1/11 Australia is the only airforce still flying this legend too.

The F-4 was the better offensive aircraft both in air to air and ground attack. The MiG was good for point defence but was not good for taking the fight long distance to it's enemies to dominate enemy airspace.
Before Vietnam ended the F-4E was in combat with a nose mounted gun. Over a thousand were produced with the nose gun.
This plane was good in it's day (not the best dog fighter, but good air to ground aircraft), after it came the F-14 Tomcat, then the F-18 Hornet, and last new American jet fighter to date the F-22 Raptor (all of these aircraft were greatly improved from the ones before it: The F-4 Phantom had greater power and range than the F86 Supersabre, The F-14 Tomcat was Faster and more manuverable than the F-4 Phantom, The F-18 Hornet was a better plane all round, and the F-22 was a quantum leap from F-18

I worked a lot of years on a lot of F-4's and you guys can say what you want about their looks, and agility, and yada, yada, yada. If you never saw the Thunderbirds fly them, they did a low level, inverted pass with the landing gear, speed brakes, flaps, and tail hook extended. Don't bother doing the math, that translates into pretty near zero lift, but those two noisey, smelly J-79's pushed all that metal through the air just fine. RAW POWER. (phantoms phorever)
You are right that the F-4 replaced the F-100 super sabre with the Thunderbirds.
However, the A-4 Skyhawk replaced the F-4 with the Blue Angels. The F-4 was replaced with an older airframe! But the T-38 and A-4 used a fraction of the fuel.

VERY fast in a straight line, capable in its mission (it's old school technology). BUT, the F-16 is EXTREMELY capable both air-to-air and air-to ground and in its multi-role capabilities. And it just keeps getiing better. There is no comparison between the two.

pennridgeboy is right, i'v done extensive research on the F - 4 Phantom and it has always had gun capability. It wasnt until the E model when the Phantom had it's external mounted 20mm multibarrel gun.

the F-4 is a fat ole bird but its still good,the only reason why it wasnt living up to its full potential in vietnam was because the stupid "experts" in the pentagon anounced dogfighting was obsolete,they minamized dogfight training and didnt put a gun into it.the airforce put in a gun near the end of the war and the navy upgraded dogfight training.dont gte me wrong,its a flying greyhound bus that moves better than a ferrari!

and there wasn't an effective target ID system, forcing phantoms to get into visual range before firing anything.

In a recent exercise a modernized F-4E AUP managed to 'kill' a Rafale. Fifty years after its first flight the Phantom can still fight and beat much newer aircraft. It is Phabulous.

This plane speaks for it's self. well built and was able to take abuse and keep flying. Just an Incredible fighter and bomber. The Marines would use the fighter as a bomber and also cover at the same time. over 5000 were built and still used by many countries. Proof positive that you build some great it will last!!

I spent 14 years crew chiefing this beautiful lethal "phast mover". Got the Phantom bites to prove it. I can still hear those J-79"s howling on final approach. Sounded like some prehistoric beast howling in the night! God I miss her.

Hands down, the absolute best spectator aircraft ever flown by the Thunderbirds. The shear size, grace and incredible sound of these "Phabulous Phantoms" were a sight to behold. The F-16 show is good but it will never top this brute of an aircraft.

The one weakness it had in terms of armament was it's lack of a gun in the F4A-D variants. They fixed it in 1968 in the E model. All in all, a legendary fighter.

There was also a planned F-4 variant capable of reaching Mach 3. The MiG31 could have been totally beaten by such a variant since the MiG31 is only barely maneuverable. (I tried out the MiG31 on FS2000 and it was more like an airliner)

The MiG29 in any variants has no chance against an F-4 Phantom. The F-4 is powerful in all situations while the MiG29 was designed for intercepting lower speed targets such as bombers. It loses energy very quickly if it gets involved in a close combat with an F-4,let alone an F-16.Thus,F-4 was more than 3 decades ahead of its time and is still being used by the world's best air forces-Korean and Japan,for example.

Had the honor of being around these aircraft on the U.S.S. Midway in Japan. The pilots, support crew and the ship's crew loved these...loaded with sidewinder missiles, they were amazingly effective, for only 6 million bucks a shot...sweet - a truly lovely aircraft.
With updated technology, our military could greatly benefit by re-introducing them, in an updated version, if we only had a congress that could rationally think.
Nothing like standing on the flight deck and seeing these blast off.

If America's enemies ever reach the stage where they can produce a military aircraft as effective and successful as the F-4 Phantom II from their own resources, without having to steal through espionage other countries' designs and technology and copying them (as bad as that is already), then it will be even more worrying for the United States and those allied to her than it is at present. If the US and her allies ever lose their technological edge, it'll clearly be the start of a new dark age.

There was nothing this versatile, multi-role fighter could not do--within reason, of course. The Phantom II is an example of American military technology and technical skill at its post-war/Cold-war best; and as such, it remains a very useful benchmark.

The israelis, were working on improved Phantom they called it the Super Phantom it had F-15 engines and the F-15 avionics and radar package. When McDonnell Douglas found out about it they were worried that it would cut into the sales of it's F-15's and made Israel stop all development on it even though the Super Phantom was a better aircraft than the Eagle.

This Aircraft was the spitfire of the 60s and 70s Australia had them on loan waiting delivery of the F1/11 Australia is the only airforce still flying this legend too.

The F-4 was the better offensive aircraft both in air to air and ground attack. The MiG was good for point defence but was not good for taking the fight long distance to it's enemies to dominate enemy airspace.
Before Vietnam ended the F-4E was in combat with a nose mounted gun. Over a thousand were produced with the nose gun.

This plane was good in it's day (not the best dog fighter, but good air to ground aircraft), after it came the F-14 Tomcat, then the F-18 Hornet, and last new American jet fighter to date the F-22 Raptor (all of these aircraft were greatly improved from the ones before it: The F-4 Phantom had greater power and range than the F86 Supersabre, The F-14 Tomcat was Faster and more manuverable than the F-4 Phantom, The F-18 Hornet was a better plane all round, and the F-22 was a quantum leap from F-18

I was lucky enough to work the double ugly for 16 years, retired them the 1st time pulled out of the boneyard and kept them up for another 2 years and change, hell of an airframe. I was sorry to see them turned into drones. I guess sinead OConner/prince said it best nuthing compares to u Definitly not the lawn darts or the other plastic jets. it's actually called ellington field now..and the 147th FW is based their with the texas ANG.flying around a dozen f-16's..i heard they are going to be phased out soon and become U.A.V. squadron..

I worked a lot of years on a lot of F-4's and you guys can say what you want about their looks, and agility, and yada, yada, yada. If you never saw the Thunderbirds fly them, they did a low level, inverted pass with the landing gear, speed brakes, flaps, and tail hook extended. Don't bother doing the math, that translates into pretty near zero lift, but those two noisey, smelly J-79's pushed all that metal through the air just fine. RAW POWER. (phantoms phorever)

You are right that the F-4 replaced the F-100 super sabre with the Thunderbirds.
However, the A-4 Skyhawk replaced the F-4 with the Blue Angels. The F-4 was replaced with an older airframe! But the T-38 and A-4 used a fraction of the fuel.
