There is a well documented flight which left LAX and flew circles over the ocean for several hours, leaving lasting trails as it did, before returning to LAX some five hours later. The flight was not commercial, it was said to be weather research.

Yes i Can Explain this. Contrails can last a few seconds to few min. Under the Perfect conditions. that is 33thousand feet @ 70% Humidity Ice Cristal's form from Hot Jet Eng And Can last up to 20 min. Chemtrails on the other hand last all day and Spread out in to clouds. I hope this helps ?
