Wow. HELP THE CHICKENS!!! If you're reading this on an Apple product then this is cool: Poor Chickens and chicks! I
I really got to drive down to key west any time they get a storm with winds in between 50-100mph anything less isn't worth it any anything more is to risky on island
I rode out this hurricane, and it was pretty rough. There was no electricity, cable or cell phone service. I remember on the morning of it, the winds weren't terrible, but they began really picking up steam around 11 o' clock or so, and then the power went out at around noon and we had no power until the next day. But my grandparents had power, which was strange. I remember hearing the howling from the winds and hearing the rain. I can't believe it's been almost 5 years already!
I lold so hard at the chickens, just such random placement. I was going to write a really constructive paragraph on how unreal weather phenomena can be but when I saw those chickens - I just couldn't help myself I apologise.
@Mthulu LOL. Actually Key West, Florida is overrun with them... so they're pretty much everywhere you look. But, it was still pretty random to run across a whole family during the storm... so I decided to include them in the clip. The same thing happened during Hurricane Ike, except that time I was swarmed by a hungry group of them when I opened my car door...lol.
i went in 2007 and they were still fixing stuffs up . and all the hotels were filled so i had to sleep in the car i will always remember tht day and there were a whole bunch of roosters
I was so wasted for this storm....Hurricane Wilma 10 days later really fucked us up bad though...this was nothing..lil storm to say the least. just an avaerage september in the keys
Are you sure the winds in Key West were only 75 mph with gusts to 100? Because from the way those palm trees were whipping around from 3:47 to 4:40, I would have estimated closer to 125 miles per hour sustained with gusts to 150 miles per hour.
@triton115 what are you a human weather vane. Don't you think a seasoned storm chaser knows what he's talking about. Why is it there's always someone that thinks they know more than anyone else?
I was going to move to Texas, Orange when I was seven in 05. But when we got there we had no warning what so ever, but thank the lord my mum is american and knew the signs and what to do. I was unlucky though because I got trapped in the house for 24 hours :(
ahahahaha!lol the man got hit by that wave crashing and knocked his azz down...lol this was so funny...and she gained up to category 5ive mandatory evacuation was ordered for louisiana and texas as rita gained that category 5ive strength over the gulf of mexico she had the lowest pressure out of the all the storms ever,ever...until wilma came along...
i live around tampa and i was on vacation there like a week before that storm but ive never left for a hurricane and ive lived in florida my whole life
This wasn't a hurricane, it was a T.S. I was there at the time (I lived there for all of 2005)...and hurricanes aren't a joke, unless you're a shmuck. A Cat 5 would have demolished the keys. Hell Wilma was a near miss and nearly destroyed Key West.
The surge of water from Wilma screwed us in Key West, the wind from every Hurricane I've been through (born in 1990 and lived here my entire life, never left for a Hurricane) is not as badass as people make it seem. The water is the problem not the wind. I would much rather have a hurricane than a tornado.
I live in Ocala which is roughly 700 miles from the Keys and they closed school for us during Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. And yeah hurricanes are not fun at all. No power, water, cell phones (they die eventually) and it gets really humid and hot after one passes. Not fun. Seeing the eye wall is about the best it gets, it's like rain with relentless wind, EYE WALL!!!! Rain with even higher wind. Not exactly beautiful beach weather. If anyone likes it, come live in 4 in one year!
at 1:50 LMfao that kid was right there he looked at the camera. then bam that wave hit him rofl that was funny..... Later on he got friends there wtf.
Good luck those who are in florida but thatw as funny with that guy. and his friends who camerofl
hey, to anyone who thinks Rita hitting KW was not a big deal... I know people who almost died in that hurricane! They were trapped in their home and the surges flooded the place, six feet high... they could not open the door to let the water out, or open windows to get out. They were fortunate not to drown. They lost their car and everything they owned. The place was covered with thick black mold for weeks and FEMA was useless. Why stay? They could not affrod to leave...
I was on vacation in Key West Recently...... Those poor chickens obviously made it through the Hurricane just fine because they were all over the place! They are kind of a nuisance, and as sad as it sounds, It would do Key West some good, if a few got blown away by the hurricane!
The highest gust recorded by another storm chaser, right next to my location, was 102mph... and that may even have been a little on the high side. Sustained winds were right around 70-75mph. So as strong as it may look, these winds are actually just barely hurricane force.
look at that,I can not belive this, I was there, at sleepless night,I think all abaut my life. But I went to there next year same season. That was greet and amazing vacation. Arif Koknar
i was in that fukin shit man! althou i was in texas, but it was rough there too. in cal. they got snow days. we got a week of hurricane days to fix the damage and wait for power and shit. We stayed unlike the pussys(not florida, i woulda left too).
If the damn local govt doesn't stop over-reacting to every storm, they will completely & effectively ruin all small businesses in the Keys. The 'mandatory evacuations' for NO REASON are scaring off tourist dollars
I live in the UK and I remember glued to my television screen from midnight to 8am watching CCN during this hurricane :P It was over-advertised because they didin't want another Katrina..

that was dumb yet it was good. it only showed the trees moving. the good part was that I love watching these storms on vid and i like to see their power.
Yeah, i live in Florida however i live in Orlando so you dont get violent storms, well not as violent, but other then that Florida has awesome weather! its soo nice to jst dive in your pool on a hot day, after school on a hot day i just literally jump it the pool with my skool clothes on lol. By the way awesome video
Once again, someone who knows how to shoot hurricane video. The video is likely better than anything anyone shot over in TX or LA once Rita made landfall there several days later. I was there, Port Arthur, and it was nearly impossible to see anything worth shooting. Also, the worst of Rita's effects were in Cameron county, LA where no human should have been. Sometimes you just can't be where the action is, but this guy hit it right on for Rita in the Keys. Excellent video.
Wow, thanks for the great comment Mark! I guess my 23 years of chasing is finally paying off...haha! I agree, as much as I would have liked to have been in Cameron Parrish during Rita's final landfall, that area was scoured by the surge and there were no substantial structures to begin with. And, with a nighttime landfall, that would have been a lose,lose...lose situation. The storm's effects in Key West, though minimal, definitely made for some good video though. Thanks again.
Hi James. Thanks for the comment, Rita was definitely a impressive storm in Key West. To answer your question, yes, the hurricane was a category two, with 105-110 mph winds, as it was passing south of the lower Florida Keys. But, with Rita's closest point to Key West about 50 miles to the south, there was only a short duration of minimal hurricane conditions (70-75mph winds) with gusts of 90-100 mph. And, with a nighttime landfall, that would have been a lose,lose...lose situation. The storm's effects in Key West, though minimal, definitely made for some good video though. Thanks again.
