The principle of mutual destruction stops nations from using nukes. If one coutnry uses nukes then the other will and then everything is destroyed so in the end there wouldn't be any pointy so they don't launch them. If too many nukes go off at once the nuclear outfall causes too much shit to go in the sky blocking the sun or "nuclear winter" and everything gets shitty cold :/
A global nuclear war will not end the world. People know enough about nuclear weapons that they will not use them in huge numbers. Their most likley aplication in warfare is a limited tactical use on the battlefield or on forward enemy fule and amunition dumps. The use of them on a stategic scale is unlikley but if it did happen it would be very limited.
Imagine the unlikely event of a Russian attack on the US. On American soil, they cannot deploy tactical nukes, which would be stupid. However, in an attempt to destabilize the Russian command structure, hit Moscow. Well, it's not like the Russians won't fire back. You would be wrong to think a country with nukes wouldn't use them in the event of impending defeat. One more thing: there is no such this as limited strategic nuclear war. The whole point is to overwhelm the other country.
Nukes, oddly, keep things like WW2 from repeating themselves. History has a way of repeating itself. Is the attempt to keep it from doing so bad, I wonder?

Ever heard of the Winter War? The Soviet Union attacked Finland during WW2 with 1 million troops and thousands of tanks and aircraft. The Soviets lost a quarter million men and a couple thousand tanks to 250,000 Finish conscripts. In the end Russia managed to take over one city and some forests before signing the Moscow peace treaty with the Fins.
Russia has only strength in numbers, tactics and organization are non-existent in this military force.

The only war Russia ever "won" (without the support of western powers) was against Napoleon. That victory was only achieved through adopting a scorched earth policy on Russian soil, forsaking its own citizens to death by starvation. Essentially leaving nothing behind for the French to conquer, including your own capital.

1. Russia won MANY wars without the support of the West. Dozens wars with Poland (which was quite powerful), Ottoman Empire, Sweden etc.
2. In Napoleonic war Napoleon fought against all of Europe, idiot.
3. No, jackass. Civilians simply left with the army. They got evacuated. Sure, people starved, but it was the ONLY WAY to win against Napoleon (who's army was 5x the size of Russia's field army).
4. Winter war was a victory. 1939 was bloody, 1944 was steamroll.

I can find dozens of Russian defeats, but also of any other major power. Posting 2-3 defeats proves nothing. Russia has one of the greatest military histories in the world, and many brilliant tactics and strategies were used to achieve this.
Including victory in WW2 (BTW, did you know that 85% of every German KIA died in Eastern front? Even though it was bloody, 5,000,000 German KIA versus 7,000,000 Soviet KIA (exluding 3,000,000 Soviet POW's who died in nazi concentration camps)).

It was a Soviet victory, clearly (yet costly, but it can't all be blamed on the Soviet leadership). Whatever they teach you in Finland, Stalin had no intention to annex Finland. If he wanted to, he could have done it in early 1940 (after Winter Finland could never hold off the Soviets) and in 1944.

I'm sorry to crush your dream, but there was no Soviet parade in Helsinki because Stalin didn't want it. Sure, you put up a very strong fight, but no way would Finland hold off Soviet Union after winter 1940 or in 1944.

You didn't crush anything, Stalin didn't want Helsinki for a reason, it would mean constant civil war in fnnish area.
And when I said that it was victory for finnish people, I didn't mean that stalin was begging us for peace... No we asked for peace and Russia gave us the terms, which were REALLY hard to accept for finland, but we did accept them. We were running out of supplies and men. and Germany was losing the war fast and on all fronts.

And how do you know there would be a civil war? No. Stalin had NO interests in Helsinki. He had NO interests in capturing Finland. There was interest in a relatively small area outside Leningrad. Nothing more. So how can you call this a victory for the Finnish people, or whatever? If Stalin actually tired to annex Finland, then yes. Otherwise, no.

First of all, Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was signed not because Stalin wanted to annex Europe, but because:
1. Western Allies rejected his offer (instead signed Munich agreement with Hitler) of fighting Hitler.
2. Stalin needed time to build up his forces.
3. The more land between Soviet Union and Nazi Germany the better. It was better to take half of Eastern Europe, then let Nazis take all of it.
It was pretty much appeasement. Stalin had no intentions to ally with his nemesis.

I already told you the reason, for Winter war. If Stalin wanted to annex Finland, he wouldn't demand such a small portion of Finnish land (and offer more, empty, Soviet land in return).
And I know what happened to the Baltics. It was either Hitler or Stalin who would get them, and Stalin was the fastest. It was a power fight.
OK, if you don't make any sensible arguments I'm leaving. There was no intention at annexing Finland. I'm not lying.

Further to "eaglepies"'s comment. The Nazi Party promised eveything to everyone, and delivered a lot prior to the war. They used Jews and Communists as scapegoats for Germany's problems, and their promises of an end to these were welcomed. This is why so many German civillians turned a blind eye to the Concentration Camps. As well as the fear of the Gestapo, the SS, the SA, and ending up in a Death Camp themselves.

The "Concentration Camps" were commonly used in that era by both the Nazis and the Soviets to get rid of unwanted political opposition. In the Soviet Union they were called "Gulags".
The "Death Camps" used for "processing" Jews and other undesirables were secretly enforced by the SS and high ranking Party officials in 1943, 4 years into the war, after the secret Wansee Meeting.
Distinguish between "Concentration" and "Death".
The German people never knew of the "Death Camps" until after the war.

The principle of mutual destruction stops nations from using nukes. If one coutnry uses nukes then the other will and then everything is destroyed so in the end there wouldn't be any pointy so they don't launch them. If too many nukes go off at once the nuclear outfall causes too much shit to go in the sky blocking the sun or "nuclear winter" and everything gets shitty cold :/

A global nuclear war will not end the world. People know enough about nuclear weapons that they will not use them in huge numbers. Their most likley aplication in warfare is a limited tactical use on the battlefield or on forward enemy fule and amunition dumps. The use of them on a stategic scale is unlikley but if it did happen it would be very limited.

Imagine the unlikely event of a Russian attack on the US. On American soil, they cannot deploy tactical nukes, which would be stupid. However, in an attempt to destabilize the Russian command structure, hit Moscow. Well, it's not like the Russians won't fire back. You would be wrong to think a country with nukes wouldn't use them in the event of impending defeat. One more thing: there is no such this as limited strategic nuclear war. The whole point is to overwhelm the other country.
