I think it's outrageous how some parents want to expose their children to the pressure of being beautiful at such young age. These kids who win all the time will grow up thinking they're the most beautiful girls ever and others are trash and will most likely never get real friends. And those kids who don't win will grow up constantly searching for flaws in their appearance, wondering why they don't win and suffer of low self-esteem and maybe even depression. Way to go, parents...

Many sports require very early training, such as skating, ballet, gymnastics, swimming etc. A beauty pageant is not a big deal. It means having fun with putting on some fancy outfits, make-up and fooling around, especially if you are a kid.

But with looks it's not the same. It means more tanning and more hair extensions etc, and girls tend to take appearance more personally than physical ability. Plus, have you listened to some of these kids? Not all of them are even enjoying themselves. The parents are making them do lot of stuff they don't want.

And after all, sports require a lot more effort, injury risks, stress, diet, than walking on a podium with fancy outfits and make-up or impersonating someone. At least as a child, a pageant is just fun. A lot of little girls like to put make-up and fancy dresses just for fun. It's like playing with dolls.

@lillybellebutterfly1 First of all, I would say forcing someone to do something against their will IS abuse. Anything that makes the other feel uncomfortable can be. And as I said earlier, competing with your skills which you can improve is very different from competing with your own face which is much harder to improve. I wouldn't compare beauty pageants to sports. True, they're both competitions, but they focus on very different areas and losing has a very different effect on the kid.
