  • Who was this Scarpia?

  • dare i say it? better version than Maria Callas- singing tone much more lyrical and expressive, acting superb

  • What a magnificent woman! I saw her sing many times, & although I always appreciated the voice, I was too young then to appreciate how beautiful & sexy she was. The passion is intense. She must have made some man very happy.

  • and people said opera singers of old didn't act well.... holy crap I've been lied to.

  • "Onegin 65" è il nome di granzia! :D

  • Bellísimo, sublime la interpretación de Shirley Verrett, su voz plena, Brava, Brava!!!!

  • exquisite! till now i ranked callus as best acting while her singing ....shirley has invaded the throne! vocally tho, Pricie is my favorite

  • Yes, yes, yes! My gods what an actress and singer!

  • Nice and very original, unique and magnifique. Great Job for a difficult operistic area.

  • I don't often say this, but right up there with La Divina. What a wonder!

  • Magnificent!!

  • Shirley Verrett was a remarkable artist who could move effortlessly between the mezo and soprano fachs and do them both equally well. Her Norma,Lady MacBeth,Tosca, are great as are her Dalila, Carmen,

  • @intelegentable And to think she she started her career rather late in life, preceded only by a successful run in real estate and a lamentable marriage that made the society columns from East to West Coast, having been fortunate enough to have been born to a successful Southern California businessman.

  • Wow! By far the most credible Tosca I've ever seen alone with the great Maria Callas. Ms. Verret is so accurate in her portrayal of Fiora Tosca and her facial expresions so in tune with the overal drama it's impossible not to believe she is INDEED Tosca incarnate. As always than you Onegin65!

  • I hope Shirley Verrett is always remembered as the exquisite beauty with the magnificent voice that she was. Her performances made music live and it was always a beautiful experience. Her Samson and Delilah will always be one of my favorites as she performed with the marvelous San Francisco Opera....God Bless Ms. Verrett.....so stunningly beautiful and wonderful.

  • I justed figured out that shirley verrett was my cousin lol No wonder I have a strange love for Opera O.o

  • 1970 saw Verrett at Vienna's Staatsoper as Princess Eboli....the best ever....singing and acting..................Bangkok Chalie

  • wow,!!!!! amazing,!!!! how sad that we have lost this type of singers with great voices and amazing temper!!! God bless Shirley Verrett wherever she is!!!!!

  • @stradivari1530 "...wherever she is!!!..." Among the blessed in heaven, of course!!!

  • wonderful voice

  • Wow!

  • damn thats hot

  • Stunning. Rest in peace, Shirley.

  • Sad to hear of Miss Verrett's passing. Hers was a voice of exquisite beauty. Another great artist gone.

  • When they talk Force of Nature most of the time it is just Hubris, But when you Talk About This Women It Is The Real Thing! This Voice Is Life! This Voice Human! This Voice is SEX AND LOVE !!! This Voice Goes To The Very Marrow Of My Bones! I Still And Always Will Love You! GO SING TO THE GODS, CALLAS IS WAITING!!! GREG

  • Perfect voice for that aria.

  • Oh my Lord - this is exquisite!!! Sheer brilliance!!!

  • what a beauty ! wonderful voice and interpretation... i hadn't heard her sing puccini that much but really that one is a gem.

  • I saw Miss Verrett in Tosca at Tanglewood. It was something extraordinary. What takes care her voice's type. She's a great singer and artist!

  • Miss Verrett has spoken often about her voice type, and has been quoted as saying "Soprano, e basta!" In her website, she describes herself as such, and perhaps she is that rare breed of soprano sfogato. Her biography (I Never Walked Alone, 2003) is quite revealing in this issue. She is exquisite in this performance (which I also attended). Her Tosca was beautiful, physically, vocally, and dramatically. Brava!

  • You can tell by the applause at how well it came across in the MOH. Thank you for posting R. P.

  • I have never been convinced that she was a soprano by nature. A high Mezzo yes, soprano, no.

  • i am very happy to be the first one to watch this video, i was at the met that very night!!!!!!!!
