This review does NOT do the "Open Road" justice .... his setup in this particular demo is not highlighting the real juicy-ness of the Open Road .... it really is a different-sounding OD, with nice, smooth, juicy upper-mid's. One thing he needed to do with this pedal is crank the Tone up more than he did. But listening to this demo, i'm not sure if that would do it anyway...his cleans are too flat and lacking treble. Kicking up the treble is where the Open road really shines. JMHO. rgds.
Nice thing about Visual Sound is if you have a question, comment, or technical issue with one of their pedals, you can go on either their facebook page or facebook official user group page and you'll get an answer from Bob Weil himself or someone way up in tech support. Very Excellent customer service.
Guys, don't be so hard on Paul. When you get as much free gear as Guitar World does, you feel obligated to say good things about them. When you actually have to shell out $100+ for something then you can be critical
That room has lots of reverb to it... why are you doing demos in that room Paul? We want to hear the sound of the pedal, not the sound of the pedal in a room full of reverb, through a crappy guitar into a good amp.
@41224jason exactly, but these videos weren't made for youtube, they were made for the CD that comes with the magazine that people have to pay to get. So therefor, Guitar World would technically be making money from the songs, which is why they don't just play them straight up
This is paul, from guitar world. Everyday, I'll be using a low end guitar on a nice amp, and tell you how awesome every piece of gear I come across is.
No I don't suck actually. Fender just makes quality products in their subordinate lines. The squier looks, feels (to a great extent), and sounds like a true strat. Nuff said.
@InstrumentalMania I agree. I have several American Fenders, including a custom shop strat, but I also have two squier classic vibes. I love them as well.
I agree, but in this case, he's right most Epiphone Les Paul guitars are a sham. I played one once and it didn't sound like a "real" Les Paul to me. The custom Epiphone is OK, but the Les Paul Studio is FAR better.
MIJ Epiphones are better then most Gibson LP Standards though, its a shame more people dont know about them, or that they aren't as readily available in the US
True, i've never played an MIJ Epiphone. However, I would question as to whether or not it has that "real" Gibson feel/sound. Alot of Les Pauls and Gibson instruments have little tricks and digital stuff, or have been drilled so they are lighter. Even the new Standards are drilled now, so I will only buy used or reissue Gibsons.
2. The joke is, is that he always gives good reviews. Yeah, it's his job, but instead of JUST showing us the good stuff, he should be telling us what sucks to. Also, did I ever say he did a bad job? Your stupid cunt just LOVES to assume things off of my comments, doesn't it? This is the second time you've fucking jumped to conclusions based on a comment on one of these videos, and you're STILL an idiot.
Free videos, or paying for a magazine? Choice is clear. Either way, this doesn't affect the validity of my comment -- the videos do not show anything negative. Nor does it change the fact that bfmvrocks101 is fucking stupid as hell.
Mehf. I'm cheap, as are a lot of people. Plus, magazines are becoming an obsolete form of up-to-date media. Vlogging, and at the very least blogging, is becoming key when it comes to keeping people informed. And again, this doesn't affect the validity of my statement.
I agree, it is going to be difficult for a magazine to explain why they slammed a product who advertise in their mag. The last thing a mag wants is to lose ads!
Exactly... if they switched to a blog/vlog based form of media, then they wouldn't have to deal with sponsors. They could pick up ads from literally ANYWHERE, or they could charge a subscription fee, and only put a few videos up a month for people to preview and decide whether or not it's worth it. It'd save them a TON on printing.
@ScreamingBloodyGore could be good, then they could actually point out problems with products, like Guitar Player magazine. I don't read Guitar World anyway, how do you call it Guitar WORLD and then have only metal guys featured every month? Small world indeed.
@CiviC092 Ahh right, there's only one overdrive in this vid. I completely confused it with the other vid I was watching at the same time. Sorry for that, and thanks for the reply!
Paul rules!

haha! @1:56 he calls the overdrive a delay! I cannot stand his reviews, good player but the tone of everything he does sucks.

that amp is way too dark for a pedal demo. i wanna hear how it affects a flat EQ not one that sounds terrible.

Whoa, they should've definitely done a re-take on that bit!

I think the reasons he plays certain guitars in these vids are.
1.paid by the company for advertising
2. they want low budget guitars that kids will be able to relate to... if he's playing a 3000 guitar kids will feel alienated.
spicbuddha 2 years ago 3
Yup. GW doesn't do reviews, they do advertisements.
CleverDjembe 2 years ago
He used a PRS for a while. Maybe the pickups are changed to Gibson ones, so people will think these pedals sound better than they are.
