Officers have to have reasonable suspicion a crime has been committed before asking for ID. If called to a scene or traffic stop, he does have the right to request ID to insure officer safety, determining if he is dealing with a dangerous person(s). He has the right to detain and investigate for a reasonable amount of time. This is according to Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court - that was upheld by the US Supreme Court. This ruling further solidified the “Terry pat” - “Terry v. Ohio”.

Where I live you have to show your ID if police ask you. They can ask for any reason and if you are not caring a ID they can take you to the station to confirm your identity if they feel its necessary.

Personally, I dont really have a issue with that. It removes more problems than it adds because the police officers know who they are dealing with and it makes them less edgy as well. Then again, police injustice here is very low.

If you are not driving, the supreme court has ruled you do not have to carry a ID at all, so you are not required to have to show one ever.
