Blender proomotes stealing one copyrighted art, gives me something to think about while I am creating something. Namely, why would I create anything ever if others 'may' use it and earn (my) money for doing nothing other then copying.

Until they activally promoted and joined the side of wikipedia I exually was very satisfied with Blender and used it for a very long time. They're expired wich is a shame now they've went beyond 2.49. A sad day it was this week.

Problem: I must have clicked something accidently but I my move, scale and rotate tools dont work properly anymore. The x, y and z axises have turned into straight lines with nothing on them. I've tried resetting but that doesn't work. I can still scale, move or rotate the object, but not with the axis in the viewports. Please help because I'm stuck :(

@Hym138 theres a 30 day trial and its around three thousand dollar you can use the the student version for free for a lifetime has all the professional 3ds max tools i mean there similar but theur difference is that you cant use the student version for commercial use like creating games on a commercial game engine

You should do inventor and revit. Both are simple in the begging but get a lot more advanced. Like with inventor you have the iLogic, stress analysis, gear (different kinds) and a lot more. And revit, different materials and other stuff. I don't know, we haven't got to revit yet in my school. But inventory and revit are my favorite programs.

I think it's 3ds max cuz maya is more for animating like in movies and shit and 3ds max just for modelling. although 3ds max is a bit complicated with good tutorials you get it done. But if you don't want to download illegally or pay like $6.500 :p you can just use blender that's free.

@exelentdude 3ds Max is one of the most common programs used to make 3d models for video games. Basically, every object in a video game has a shape, textures (colors), and animations. In big video game companies, there's usually a few different people for each area, but you can do it all yourself with 3ds Max and Photoshop. It can also be used for cg effects, like in movies... Or even architectural or engineering visualization.

@exelentdude Usually a map in a video game has a lot more information than just the way things look. There's a lot of stuff going on that you don't see. For example, there's the Unreal Engine. The "map editor" for Unreal is called UnrealEd. There is a free version of Unreal called UDK that lets you use UnrealEd and the Unreal Engine. You make characters and props in 3ds max. Then usually they are textured in another program like photoshop, then brought into UnrealEd and put in a map.

@exelentdude Yep, pretty much. Don't get me wrong, I love Valve, but the Source Engine and Hammer Editor don't even compare to Unreal. Unreal is made to be cutting edge and easy to use, Epic sells Unreal Engine 3 to big companies. Bioshock, Batman Arkham City, Borderlands, Homefront, Mass Effect and at least 20 other big games use Unreal Engine 3. Valve are nice enough to let other people mess around with their engine, but they only make it as good as they need it.

First of all what would you recommend for animations modeling ETC. 3ds max? Or maya? And for sculpting what would you recommend? Mudbox? And i really can't think of another sculpting program. @halo6534 To my knowledge, the top 4 modelling programs are Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and Blender. Blender is free. For video game modelling, they all work. Which one you choose is a matter of preference and budget. If you go to college, there's the "Autodesk Education Suite for Entertainment Creation 2012 Student", you can find it online for just $325. It includes Maya, 3ds Max, Mudbox, and others. Ttry Blender first, its actually pretty good. And it has sculpting and texture painting built in.

@halo6534 Yeah, all those programs I listed can animate. I'm not really experienced with animation. I've used Mudbox and it's really nice. The other big sculpting program is Zbrush. And Blender has sculpting too but it's not as pretty and feature-rich as the other two. My biggest advice to you is start out small. Make specific, attainable goals. Don't just sit down with all these programs and be like "okay, time to make some awesome AAA shooter". Do simple stuff first, learn the process.

Well, I'm obviously here to learn as well. As I mentioned, I like Thenewboston because he adds some personality and fun to the tutorials on the side, and I still think I'm learning in a decent pace. Some of the other tutorials I've come across just makes me feel like I'm back at the school bench again. I guess to each their own though. Not everyone is suited for one particular way of teaching.
