Cheap Trick was around while G&R line up was still in grade school. SO - Slash stole the idea from Jon Brant. BTW, thanks goodness Petersson came back. As of 2009 Ben E. Carlos needs to return :-(
@OFinsignificance TECHICALLY he is still a member but he is not the current touring drummer. Bun is supposedly touring with another band as i read on another website and if you think of it, it can get tiring of playing the same songs for 3+ Decades, but i do feel if cheap trick records another album he'll be back on that tour.
I saw them in April of 1989 In San Antonio they put out a graet show. The Event was called La Semana Alegre (RIP held by the S A Jaycees) during Fiesta Week. They would get a bad ass line up of bands for a week. Well during the show the crowd was pellting plastic beer cups Rick Nielsen got so pissed off that they stopped playing, Rick pointed out the guy that was throwing the cups n said "that fucker there" that crowd beat the guys ass and then CT resumed the show...fucking awesome!
I had the pleasure of being under one of Rick's pick showers at Alpine Valley, WI, in 1982. I kept motioning for him to throw me a pick, but he kept shaking his head "no." Finally, near the end of the show, he came over and threw a whole hand full of picks at me.
Wait a second! Rick says they're in the Houston Astrodome! This is Houston, not San Antonio! And you know what that means? This is the first concert I ever went to in my life! Right here immortalized on youtube! I was 2 years old... still a Cheap Trick fan to this day!
This concert was 10 years after the Dream Police recording, and vocalists often sing differently in concert. From the clips I've seen from this show, Robin sounds great though.
There are some vocalists that sound pretty close to the studio recording when they sing live, Paul Rogers in another one. So you are correct that Robin sounds different, but it's more likely that he sings the song different, rather than his voice really changed.
Must depend on what night you see them. I've heard S. Tyler, and Brian Johnson both sound horrible live, and I've also heard them sound pretty good, but never just the same as the record. I think you might be full of beans areofan515.

@JessieBolt True. I saw them live many times in the 80's. No one could or can sing like Robin.

@JessieBolt Robin tied with Freddy Mercury for the 1st position in my book.

LOL, Rick didn't do a very good job with his pick shower. The greatest American band of all time IMO.
