Did they said Mahdi, Holy War Jihad, Iraqis, showing a place of a dessert. Do that signify Arabs in the east and do they not live near a dessert sandy area?
@mharrison9 the movie/book occurs in the distant future. after a "holy" war against sentient machines (robots,) Islam and christianity is united in "one true faith", and their holy book is the "Orange Catholic Bible", which is a combination of the bible, koran and a book written during the "butlerian jihad" (the war against the machines.)
the movie takes a LOT of inspiration form islam and arabic culture, hence a lot of arabic terms. but it takes place on a distant dessert planet.
I saw the movie first, before reading the books. Loved the movie even after reading the books. The only thing I wish the movie did not have was those voice activated blasters.
David Lynch's "Dune" differs from the book. That's why many people criticize it but I don't agree. The whole movie was very well done, visual effects were great for that time and the acting was brilliant. Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis were stunning
Why do people get so upset whenever a movie is made and its not like the book??? Not just this, but ANY movie that comes from a novel. Its not SUPPOSED to be like the book..thats why its ADAPTED for film. Fuckin nerds need to calm down....
@Djjames504 You clearly don't know shit about screenplay, cinema budgets,or the creative process it takes to adapt a science fiction or fantasy novel into a visual masterpiece. If that was the case those who love Star Wars,Harry Potter,Lord of The Rings would be FURIOUS and give NONE of those films credit because they are ALL missing SO many scenes and characters that are in the books. You can't put everything thats in a book on screen. Its never been done.EVER.Its YOU who's the moron..and your mom
@tropicalpimp There was an attempt to do that once in the 1920s with a movie called "Greed" I think with the full pages of the book interspersed with a literal interpretation of the text. It was like five hours long.
It's an ok adaptation of a great book but the Sci-fi mini-series plus the superior sequel did more justice to the book otherwise this is a 47 million dollar mess. Who thinks the closet movies to this with the other Dune movies and novels are Stargate, Star Wars, Stargate, Star Trek, Avatar, Fifth Element, Dark City and The Matrix for similar movies?
Great trailer. After seeing bits of it on tv as a kid I finally rented on widescreen video 10 years ago and actually thought it wasn't bad. Then caught it on the big screen 7 years ago and liked it very much. It won't work for everyone, and has flaws, mainly telling Herbert's epic in a 140 minute film, which isn't enough time. But certainly nowhere as bad as the rep it earned back in 1984 and worth a look for any serious sci-fi film fan. Thanks for posting!
I must say though, this version ever though I grew up with it is not anyway like the book in alot of ways. Sci-Fi remake did a much better job at telling the story. Not read the book, this movie will confuse the shit out of you.
i feel like i have to watch this movie just because of the quote: "the sleeper has awaken." so famous. so good.

I didn't mind Lynch's version. I would have loved to have seen what Alejandro Jodorowsky would have done with the material!

Such a monumental 80's sci-fi film, very well done. Loved Sting in this :)

If you haven't read the book this movie is virtually impossible to understand. I've read all the Dune books so loved it. Lord of the Rings in space.

@CorporateRefugee I agree! The books were VERY GOOD! I thought they were in alot of ways better then Lord of the Rings.

Hey mate, I didn't mind this film, but it has dated quite badly. I'd love Mr Lynch to remake it with today's technologies.
Thanks for posting.
