Right..... Mario Andretti is a bum. You my unknowledgable friend are a MORON! Mario is an ex Formula one Season Champ, an ex Indycar Champ, an INDY 500 champ, and a Daytona 500 champ...... nevermind distance events. He's a bum allright. You are truly A MORON. I'm surprised you were able to spell bum.
Even in unusual situations, this safety crew seems to immediately react appropriately and remains pretty much unfazed, continuing to perform their duties. They have come a long way. Compare them to the safety crews of 20 years earlier. As a driver, that would make me feel very grateful to have people like them around.
that's what happens when you fail to slow down for WAIVING YELLOW AND WHITE FLAGS.
The safety car was not needed there (it is used so much today because Barnhart is too damn stupid to use a local yellow). The entire field got through except for the Andrettis
You gotta wonder though, what were the guys on the headsets in the Newman Haas camp doing instead of telling their drivers that there was an incident in this corner? There's a fair amount of driver error, of course. And it's hilarious it's the father/son duo, but I'd think especially after Mario does it, that the crew would be like, "hmm, maybe we should say something to Michael..."
LOL, that is actually really funny. At least they didn't have to wait very long for safety crews to get there:).This crash makes me wonder, are there safety crews for the safety crews? :)
I don't understand the statement that this is the most stupid crash ever. It looks like the safety vehicle was out of sight around a blind corner. Other cars piled in as well. It looks to me that the safety guys didn't use their heads by stopping where they did.
don't get me wrong....i'm not blasting you or him but in ANY sport there are very few people who watch the sport for the love of the sport. the vast majority of fans love one or two players or teams and hate everything else. i personally think the chief steward dallenbach should have gone to full course yellow. it would have eliminated this crap altogether. if this indicates anything ...it was the willingness to put your people at risk for no reason.
Alboretto, Johansson and so on has never been considered as good F1 drivers.
As for Michael and Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Jacques Villeneuve and Ayrton Senna.
Why is it so hard to recognize them all as good drivers?
As for F1 vs Indycar.
F1 is recognized as a "better" racing league. But personally i find Indycar to be much more exciting and competitive with combination of oval track races and racetracks.
yeah ocassionally CBS would cover a race or two. That's when Ken Squier and David Hobbs would announce it. I think the last time they did that was Nazareth 1995.
Mario always has been a bum. Its always the other guys fault. He took out 4 or 5 of the factory Fords at one corner at LeMans in '67 (it was someone elses fault). Damn! I can't seemed to remember all of Mario's greatest hits but there were a lot of them and they were always someone elses fault.
If I remember right, they taped up the nose on Mario's car and "wrote" the #6 on the nose with duct tape... Michael took his fool self completely out of it... And in spite of his best efforts, Michael DID win the championship that year...
some american people-_-think racing in europe is easy well look at cart champion zanardi, michael andretti, christiano da matta, 4 time champ car champion sebastien bourdais and bobby rahal. American hero's who sucked in europe;)
Michael Andretti never won Indy 500. Bourdais was a complete joke in IRL or Indycars. His 4 ChampCar titles mean nothing. Zanardi and da Matta even didn't make it to Indy 500. Bobby Rahal used F1 as a step stone to IndyCar racing. Best american drivers haven't even cared about F1 (AJ Foyt., Rick Mears, Al & Bobby Unser). Nelson Piquet when came to states being a three time "World Champion" sucked bigtime at Indy.
@Formule1fan21 all of the drivers who you just named were not with really good teams. bourdais was with torro rossi. da matta was with toyota who just pulled out this year due to the fact that they couldn't perform.
Jaques Villeneuve came from Indycars and almost won two straight title in F1 - it was easy. Where was Mansell in 11994, when his car wasn't a full second ahead of others? Nowhere. Bourdais raced in ChampCar with no oppostion - NewmanHaas had no competition. All best drivers were in IRL.
You said where was mansell in 94, I can say the same thing about villeneuve, where was villeneuve after 97, no points in 99, never won again, Danny sullivan won indy 500 in 1998, cart champion (1988) in F1 2 points, Michele Alboreto his teammate a win in belgium and 30,5, points, ABOUT BOURDAIS, CHAMP CAR NO GOOD DRIVER, YOU THINK PAUL TRACY IS A BAD DRIVER?
I compare F1 driver alboreto (no IRL) and teammate Danny sullivan ( indy 500 winner and cart champion) in the F1 1984 with tyrell, sullivan 2 points alboreto a win and 30,5 points, STEFAN JOHANSSON DIDN'T WIN A RACE IN F1.
i think alot of it depends on the timing each driver was at in their carreer.... the teams each driver drove at the time..... whether the team they drove for was actually competitive or not in that given year. Its hard to say exactly who was better than whom. and if each of the drivers had the adequate equipment to be competitive in either f1 or indycar racing.
There are no Sebastian Vettel's in this league...just "so-so", as they say in my country.
Can't picture Sabasyien in an Oscar Myer Weiner Car.... or dressed up like Indiana Jones...or...hitting his team mates parked car on the track....parked.LOLAOF
Please give us a break. IRL is nothing compared to formula 1. But it's good to see some IRL drivers step up to f1 successful or not. But statistically the best drivers have come from Europes other open wheel series. face the facts.
@radonma Cmon, things happen, it dosent mean they cant drive and it dosent cancel out everything they accomplished in their careers. It was just a crazy incident. Get in your own car and see if you can do it.
What a nice familly meeting they had there at that corner :) I don't know if i saw this clearly, but i think there was a car going by the accident, without crashing into the safety vehicle or one of the stationary cars, so it is possible ;)
Dude your joking right? He HAD the best car in F1. In the 9 years before he joined the team Mclaren had won 6 championships and came 2nd for the other three! Yet he still managed to be made to look like a idiot by Senna and Mika. Even both Lieger (the worst team out there almost) drivers beat him.
nah i disagree - he was going to move onto great things. They put michael andretti at a disadvantage by allowing all the other drivers to race without blindfolds on.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well Mclaren was on a decline, The car was no good, (only a legend like Senna) can pull off such great performances on it like at dontington park 93') look at the next year 94' Hakkinen did terrible in the mclaren peugot, it wasnt for a couple years until mclaren came back to top form when they got the Mercedez power plant.
not in 93, Senna the whole season complained how bad the car was compared to Williams and even Benneton was stronger in alot of ways in 93. Sure Mclaren got some wins but that was with the Legendary Ayrton Senna who could find a way to win in any car. But it was definately not the best circumstances for Michael in his rookie year in f1.
Funniest thing is that when the #2 crashes the commentators don't even mention it. WTF? Maybe an Andretti crashing during a caution wasn't unusual back in the day?
Michael's car is for sale on Ebay. It's the yellow w/ blue car coming into frame at the end. You can buy it outright for $59,900. Item number: 200191569667
phatmatt shut up I hate indy and all that. I fucking hate pricks like you. Mario and Micheal are legends they are two of the best SO SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH EVERYONE MAKED FUCKING MISTAKES!
not all the racing on street circuits are bad and its a great atmosphere. a good combination of ovals and street and road circuits are good for the indy car series.
I agree about the atmosphere at a road or street race...even though I've never been to a street race and am not a fan of them. It's like a big party...but the racing is usually not great. There's little or no run-off area before you hit the wall, and passing is next to impossible. Next to natural road courses, I prefer airport courses like Cleveland and Edmonton...
Personally I want to see the IRL remain mostly on ovals, with some road and street races to balance it out.
They had just come around the corner and had little time to react. Oval's allow spotters to see the entire track and would have communicated that to the driver, Road courses the driver relies on flag man up the track.
Yes that was at Detroit. Actually that was the old Detroit downtown course. The IRL race will be on the Detroit Belle Isle course...which either way, isn't any wider.
This allows me to comment on videos. Now as i see it running into a big yellow truck is not only a bit dumb, but then to crash into it and nearly run over a marshall they should have had their licenses revoked. And i think stock-cars are shit too man, driving round in circles does nothing for me either. Also im not a redneck. hehe i like the "what are you smokin duck?" that made me lol :P
what are you smokin duck? any asshole worth their salt would just accept that they made a mistake and move on. the andrettis did that. if piloting a 3400 pound dumpster around the track is your idea of racing then more power to you. fuck stock cars and all of the redneck asswipes that watch em!!
if you like stockers that's great. i live in the trenches and i do know just a little bit about the politics of the sport. i do not like what's going on with nascar or open wheel and it's going to get worse before it gets better. like what you want to. it's all good.
Old days when CBS had a race now and then. I think it was due to CBS having the contract for the Detroit Grand Prix (the F1 race), but since that event was no more, and was turned into a CART race, CBS may have actually had a couple years left on their Detroit commitment.
They were actually not commenting on it live. It had just happened moments before. CBS was showing a replay for the first time time, and everyone already knew what had happened, just didn't see it happen.
Retard #1 and Retard #2. What is it about a yellow flag they dont understand? YOU SLOW DOWN dum dums.... I remember this race and how Mario pissed and moaned and blamed everyone but himself. Yes its a narrow track. probably too narrow for racing of this caliber. But as a pro driver you need to compensate for that
Call me crazy, but I think the safety car is on the outside apex, because the wrecked car is there too, and these guys can see the top of the safety truck over the barrier in an otherwise blind corner.. Guess the Andretti's weren't paying attention though he he he
I'm crying! They had radios, they had a white flag & waving yellow at the corner station... The guys on the truck must have been shitting their pants

what's your beef son?
penske13 5 years ago
You called me and all other NASCAR fans redneck asswipes. But now I see that you said it's all good, so I don't get it.
O5fan 4 years ago
i called the fuckers that throw shit all over the track redneck asswipes. i probably wasn't too clear about that. sorry for the confusion.
penske13 4 years ago
Oh ok, I understand now. I hate those fuckers, lol. Make us all look bad. I never threw stuff on the track just because my driver got a bad break.
O5fan 4 years ago
They had just come around the corner and had little time to react. Oval's allow spotters to see the entire track and would have communicated that to the driver, Road courses the driver relies on flag man up the track.

The IRL will be racing in the same place this fall. Will Marco make the same mistake?? Would be REAL funny.
Brantoc 5 years ago
Yes that was at Detroit. Actually that was the old Detroit downtown course. The IRL race will be on the Detroit Belle Isle course...which either way, isn't any wider.

you see this here... "Comment on this video"
TheSmokinDuck 5 years ago
hahahahaa this goes to prove all you indycar drivers are shit. Should stick to your leaf spring, big block 4000rpm pieces of shit!
TheSmokinDuck 5 years ago
what are you smokin duck? any asshole worth their salt would just accept that they made a mistake and move on. the andrettis did that. if piloting a 3400 pound dumpster around the track is your idea of racing then more power to you. fuck stock cars and all of the redneck asswipes that watch em!!
penske13 5 years ago
Then fuck you too.
O5fan 5 years ago
What bout the guys that watch all racing including open wheeled and stock car?
racefan815 5 years ago
if you like stockers that's great. i live in the trenches and i do know just a little bit about the politics of the sport. i do not like what's going on with nascar or open wheel and it's going to get worse before it gets better. like what you want to. it's all good.

Old days when CBS had a race now and then. I think it was due to CBS having the contract for the Detroit Grand Prix (the F1 race), but since that event was no more, and was turned into a CART race, CBS may have actually had a couple years left on their Detroit commitment.
doctorindy 5 years ago
Actually, Hobbs and Squier were the announcers on CBS's NASCAR coverage, too.
O5fan 5 years ago
f1 used to race in detroit?
thechad4493 4 years ago
They did from 1982 to 1988.
mustang6172 4 years ago
Why does the commentator continue to talk about '#1 and #2' safety vehicle when something clearly more important has just happened on track? Poor.
StevenJamesJ 5 years ago
They were actually not commenting on it live. It had just happened moments before. CBS was showing a replay for the first time time, and everyone already knew what had happened, just didn't see it happen.
doctorindy 5 years ago
Retard #1 and Retard #2. What is it about a yellow flag they dont understand? YOU SLOW DOWN dum dums.... I remember this race and how Mario pissed and moaned and blamed everyone but himself. Yes its a narrow track. probably too narrow for racing of this caliber. But as a pro driver you need to compensate for that

well said

Call me crazy, but I think the safety car is on the outside apex, because the wrecked car is there too, and these guys can see the top of the safety truck over the barrier in an otherwise blind corner.. Guess the Andretti's weren't paying attention though he he he
dlracer2 5 years ago
Ok I am sorry but that was a great laugh. I am glad no one got hurt though. They were lucky.

It was a stupid crash but it's a pretty stupid narrow track too. Interesting announcing team for an IndyCar race: David Hobbs and Ken Squier.
LunceFordPrefect 5 years ago
Im sure that guy got fired right away.
