OK, I have to ask about the braids... who's idea was it? The reason I have to ask... well... go to my myspace page (slash snakelady) And scroll down the page (look on the left side of the page). I created similar braids out of yarn and attached them to a viking hat for our guard show beginning Jan 1995... and wondered if they somehow got the idea from me... or if 2 great minds really DO think alike! :) I'm in NC and we did perform our show up in NJ at WGI regionals. I love the video, BTW!
Probably a tribute to the Velvet Knights' now legendary 1992 DCI show, since this show features VK alums. The braids and viking hat were worn by the "fat lady" who brought that whacked out show to an end by singing and getting eaten by a shark!
That performance was only good for 10th place at 1992 DCI finals, yet in 2005 it was voted as one of the top 10 drumcorps shows of ALL TIME! Do a search for "velvet knights" and you'll find a vid of their 1992 DCI final show. Fun and all out joy...
The first time I saw Spirit was in 1980. It was a very sad day (in Sevierville TN). I day I will always remember. Tom Float is amazing and you guys Kick it! (you also should have beat Bridgemen that year!!!).
they did beat bridgemen in field execution...most experts agree, spirit in 80 and 81 far surpassed bridgemen any day of the week and twice on sunday. who is delucia compared to float?
We did have a tenth more in drumming execution in 80, and the Bridgemen had a tenth more in percussion analysis -- so we tied. DCI broke the tie with percussion G.E. (part of a different caption) and gave the trophy to the Bridgemen. Finally, after many, many years, DCI acknowledged the tie -- the intro of the DVD finals series has the commentators talking about how five corps shared the four captions that year. But, I'm sure they never sent Float a trophy -- they should have.
well DCI at the time was probably more old school and "if it aint broke, dont fix it"... they had been beefing up bridgemen so much, they were fixated... not taking anything away from Bayonne, but that Float style in Spirit, in my opinion, was much much better...Cathy was a member of that line, was she not? her age out?
Yes, I played tenors in 80 and 81. I was fortunate to be the right age in the right place at the right time to get to be in Tom's lines. He and Mike are great teachers. If you are on facebook, do a facebook search for Tom Float drummers -- I started a group that has lots of pictures of Tom -- including a couple with Mike in them.
I marched tenors for Float. The bes experience a drummer could ask for.

Mike aged out in 79, but he was my tenor instructor in 1980 and 81 Spirit. Then he took over as caption head when Tom left for BD in 82.
