When I see this version of the song, I realize the clear difference between this one and the original recording: the ENTIRE BAND seems more involved in this version whereas the original seems like it's just David Byrne, especially in the music video.
dunno if i think its better than the studio version but having heard the studio version a million times i love this, really stripped down and tight, the intro is brilliant, must've been immense to be there!.
i agree, k2! there are times when the studio versions just hit the spot a little better than a live or cover version! Hold your position on that attitude, man! i'm with ya!
jesus h christ--this guy takes creative use of drugs to an all time new level--did you catch the black guy on strat getting on board with david's insanity? one would have to ask one's self--how can i ever follow this captured dream sequnce? and of course the answer is--one couldn't--thanks for baring your soul david
My all time favourite Talking Heads song. It has a curious almost gospel feel in the choruses. I guess you could call this blue-eyed secular gospel - just brilliant.
What a performer, I think it's between David and Fredie Mercury for best ever performer. However it's all a question of personal taste Mr Byrne does it for me.I would also like to comment on these celebrities who go around saying how "Tough" life is for them. They are a pack of whingeing shitheads.Robbie Williams is at the top in this regard.Where a man like David Bryne took his fame like it was just part of the Job.Which of course it is.I am sick of the Rehabs and the public crying from them.
I feel this band should not have ended the way they did after all the success they've had and the innovation they're responsible for new wave music. They were too good to just hate each other for the direction of their music. David Byrne's a genius, Chris Frantz is an underrated drummer, Jerry Harrison is a great musician on both guitar and keyboards as well as a successful producer, and who can forget the hottie on bass in Tina! Truly amazing and unique, in a good way of course!
this guy is a goofy fuck but i love him i watched stop making sence and i went and got a copy the next day cuz this gets stuck in your head!!!!!!!!!!!1
David Bryne the Mad Genius! The Talking Heads were simply a groundbreaking band that refused to follow others......... and THAT my friends is how we move forward in music! AWESOME PERFORMANCE!
I was a senior in college when they did this tour and I was lucky enough to see them live. They were one of the most unique groups of the 80's and put on a great show. Many years later I saw the Tom Tom Club which was no where near as good.
If you have never seen this entire concert film you have to watch from start to finish.
lol. Now that I think of it, listening to the rhythm and style of the music, how can you blame David Bryne for performing that way? To be honest, I can't help but do it a little myself when I listen to it.
Just recently I showed this video to my mother and she couldn't stop laughing. I think I caught it from her!!!
It's a shame that they couldn't agree on what they should be as a group; otherwise, they'd still be together today! David Byrne may be a genius, but I felt the true heart of the group were Chris and Tina, because they had the smarts, writing most of the lyrics for their earlier stuff, which started their run to success!
im a huge buckethead fan and weird funk guy and uh....ive heard the talking heads before on the radio and shrugged them off as "dad music" or something. but ive listened to this and burning down the house non stop for about a week now
A British band from Manchester around about 1978- Check them out on youtube particularly their videos 'Do the Du', 'Knife slits Water', 'The Fox', particularly 'Shack Up' all total classics. Welcome to your new favourite band.
this song is a spiritual mantra, much like louis armstrong's what a wonderful world. I think some of you missed that and I hope you realize it before you are gone and share it with others.
Live version kicks ass, but the one thing I noticed about this video is that the bass player, Tina, isn't present throughout. Does anybody know why? Other than that, David Byrne and Co are taking names!
I love the way he looks at his hand, and says "you may ask yourself, how do I work this?" at 1:10. Acid inspired perhaps, but still a relevant question that science hasn't answered. (We only understand about 1% of the human brain)
wow.. i took it as a great pop record ...if you are young enough without analysing what the fk its all about .... you might enjoy the sound and record....
This reminds me of when I saw them at Narara in 1984. Same show, just white lights, no colours except for the backdrop! Classic performance. The band built up one by one with each new song till they were all on stage. One of the best concerts I've seen!
I know that David Byrne's a very talented and underrated frontman, but if he wasn't such an egomaniac and making the band all about what he wanted, then Talking Heads would've reunited and would be together today.
Erm, all of the members contributed. David was the frontman, and by far the most charismatic, but Jerry had a lot of say, and Tina and Chris cowrote most of the stuff from the first several albums. And The Heads would never reuinte, regardless of the egos of the members. They simply didn't have compatible artistic visions; there's nothing at all wrong with that.
This video is very nihilistic and means that life goes on, we'll all live our lives and die then somoene else will come replace us and it will all be the samething all over again. Times change but problems and people don't. It's all water flowing underground...
Hi Vegetarian-Atheist. Very well stated! When I first heard this song I thought of the biblical passage Ecclesiastes 1:9-14(There's nothing is new under the sun. Same as it ever was...). Whether one is theistic or atheistic most people encounter an existential crisis like this. Mr. Byrne says it so well. Tom in CA
this is textbook music that will mean something "later"... i wish it was in elementary schools... even tho they wouldnt understand... i wish i would have listened...
My interpretation after listening to this song 1 million times is - The meaning of this song is people go through life and the daily motions and that is what makes us old. Enjoy the here and now before the days go by. Don't let the water or
the pressure of mundane daily routines hold you
down. Same as it ever was resembles the routine people are in or what some would call a comfort zone. They let the days go by without
realizing that you are here to get the most out of life.

The film was directed by Jonathan Demme who would go on to win an Oscar for directing Silence of the Lambs
The cinematographer also shot Blade Runner.
And keep in mind when most concert films have rapid fire editing, this doesn't cut until 4:54 into the performance.
That's called confidence in the performance and the visuals

I've seen the Heads live 3 times, David Byrne is the most intense and interesting performer I've ever seen.
I think the point of this song is that there should be a greater urgency to our lives
and to view our existence as transient.
