  • Firstly I speak as a Rush fanatic. Secondly I speak as a Paul Gilbert fan too, so I'm not going to slag this performance off. I think it's great - the bass fills could be a little more stylistic, the notes are the same but there's no 'grunt' which Geddy has loads of, ALMOST too much top and distortion. The Bass sound is too clean and not really aggressive enough for me. Portnoy has learnt that solo pretty well enough for me though, and PG - well he owns anything he has ever played on!!

  • why is he not doing the fast bass kicks? is it too hard without double bass, mike?

  • No, the solo is from Exit Stage Left.

  • 2:21 ... Forever alone

  • solo from all the worlds a stage bonehead!

  • ^ Description is slightly misleading. Should say drum solo by Mike Portnoy. Includes YYZ Rush cover song.

PS: I'm not saying Portnoy ruined it, just that the solo could have been shorter.

  • @777Rayman777 Still sounds pretty close. Only Neil Himself can master it.

  • @777Rayman777 Actually, it should have been longer.

  • paul gilbert rocks that solo¡ \oo/ hell yeaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

  • Bass is far too loud

  • As much as i see complaints about how one of these guys ruined the song or didnt play right to one persons ear, i wouldnt choose if i could anyone but gilbert to play yyz, he is so technically sound in everything he does, portnoy is a beast on the kit, even the original peart solo which portnoy does here drags on imo, and the bass is really just the bass, good and on point. Such a nice cover for anyone who have not heard of rush to get introduced to them.

  • HOLY SHET Three of my favorite musicians jamming one of my favorite songs :'D

  • the drum solo only became interesting starting 4:44

but one thing for sure, MALONE WAS THE BEST OUT OF THE THREE MUSICIANS!!

I totally love and respect portnoy and gilbert, but malone is one hell of a bass player!!!!!!

  • needs more cowbell.

  • Everybody getting upset with Portnoy is simply a mong.

He's paying tribute to the greatest drummer the world has ever seen.

He is a fan of Neil like us, he's just really fucking good at drums too.

  • Excllent rendition. A good copy of the original.

  • this has to be the first time ive heard him play anything prog. anyone know any videos where hes playing prog style?

  • On a fretless bass, if you have your fingers places slightly above or below the correct position, will it be out of tune?

  • @Ignore14 Yup

  • Too much Portnoy here...

  • @cpamiseso yeeeeeeeees i belive

  • I can copy someone else's music too.

  • @mkmkmk1337 Then do it. Put your own cover.

  • Really, really awesome, they are very talented musician obviusly but when i close my eyes and listen to the song its just no rush but if anyone can pull an awesome tribute is this guys

  • 6:40-6:44 epic stick toss fail

  • 4:30 actual neil peart solo.

  • Dogshit. Pure Dogshit.

  • awesome!

My favorite drummer covering my 2nd favorite drummer

  • what's the intro song called? it sounds soo damn familiar but i just can't remember. ~_~

  • fuck the haters, this is awesome!!

  • Love MP's tribute to Neil Pert's cowbell solo that Neil performs in his classic drumsolo that I think almost everyone has heard, at least everyone who listens to Rush and progressive bands in excess, or are super-interested in drums, or are serious music-buffs.

Awesome tribute, from some seriously talented musicians, Paul Gilbert and Mike Portnoy are some seriously talented guys, that deserve better credits then people give them.

  • I love how Paul Gilbert worked in "The Spirit of Radio" and "Xanadu" into the ending. (BTW for anyone who was wondering, those are the songs.)

  • @diebydeath I'm not so fond of that. Kind of ruins the impressiveness of a tight ending, makes the whole performance look a little more unprofessional and needlessly over the top. And I don't think he so much worked those songs in as played them at the end...

  • Nice cover, but you can see the deficiency of talent as these guys try to duplicate the phrasing, riff and composition that Rush creates. Since Rush builds their compositions on a mathematical model, it is hard to deviate from the formula. There is a reason for each note and strike. Trying to free form in a Rush song is noticeable. People will look back at Rush and realize these were distinctive musicians of their time.

  • @datinsky69 dont we feel smart today ^^?

  • @datinsky69 'deficiency of talent'

    Seriously?

  • @Sqaarg datinsky69 has a good point. Anyone can learn to play fast on a guitar, shredding, sweeping, pinched harmonics, you name it. But it doesn't necessarily make them good musicians. They just know the techniques, not where to apply them. Paul Gilbert is a prime example in this case - he fills the piece with needless decorations that are clearly just there for an ego related reason. They don't make the piece any better. A good musician should know that not playing is as important as playing.

  • @galen2709 Deficiency of talent implies the lack of talent. Whether you like the way any of these guys play, they sure don't lack musical talent. I don't really like DT and I only know two songs from Gilbert, does that mean I think they lack talent? Of course not.

  • @Sqaarg You can't ask a question and answer it yourself. Especially if you're wrong.

Presumably, your judgement of a 'talented' musician is based on the ability to play fast, and the willingness to rely on a small variety of decorative musical devices designed to enhance a melody or line. However, these are just cases of muscle memory. Anyone can learn to move their fingers quickly, or learn a few neat tricks that make them look great, but that's not really musical talent.

  • @galen2709 I never said once in my comment that I base my judgement of musicality on technical ability. The decorative nuances are there to add a personal stamp on the music, while still paying tribute to Rush. If you don't like those decorations, or find them superfluous, that's fine, it's all subjective. But don't tell me that that is all these musicians can do and/or rely upon for their music. Don't forget, all of these guys are widely respected for their own music in the music world.

  • @Sqaarg Well I will tell you that seems to be what they rely on, because that's what it looks like. Portnoy relies far too much on a double bass drum pedal, the bassist isn't playing the bassline properly, and the guitarist seems unable to stop throwing vibrato and poorly executed pinched harmonics at his part.

Now if you're defending yourself for not saying talent equals musical ability, what are you saying talent is based on? You have to be more clear, you sound like a damn politician...

  • Boring Sydney, boring...

  • love there tribute to Rush, especially the ending ...cool

  • Portnoy is 10000000x better outa that fuckin unentertaining dream theatre

  • awesome, its so much fun to play rush tunes.

  • Bassist is amazing!! very nice!!

  • Dear bands everywhere: THIS is what counts as a drum solo. Add more of these.

  • not sure why all the harsh comments, this was a really nice cover, done very well, I think the boys from Toronto would be proud!

  • mike is mike, but hi is not neil.somethin good whit playing...not neil...

  • Is that a but print on his snare head?

  • zomg¡¡¡¡ and avenged sevenfold¡¡ :D

  • Wow....Idiots....They did an outstanding job!

  • Zzzzzz....zzzzz yawn

  • dangg! this is sick.. good job!!!!

  • ไม่รู้กูชอบมาก \m/ กูร๊อคคคคคคคคคคคคคคคค

  • Paul Gilbert and Alex Lifeson are in my top 10 of fav. guitarists. It's cool to see Paul pay a tribute.

  • Wow. (in a good way)

  • A Great cover by some Great players

  • Gotta love the critics who nitpick over tiny little mistakes. These guys probably practiced this like twice together before this performance and come out and for all intents and purposes just NAIL it and there the trolls are to say ... " at 2:07 he messes up the blabbity blah blah blah" LMAO WHATEVAH !! This is tasty

  • With some mistakes in time, sorry Mike nobody´s like Neil Pert he´s light years far away from you...And in the bass guitar, well ... Geddy may be not a "virtuoso" but he got gutts. Guitar is almost balanced with Paul.

  • @Musicklavier Geddy is a virtuoso...

  • Seriously boring, even with Sean.

  • ...four hundred comments comparing who's the best...!!! Every musicians have their style, even when they have to play someone else's music. Portnoy is not Peart, and Malone is not Geddy Lee...but still they are all the master ~ great musicians ~ with no need to comments about each others...

  • portnoy was influenced by peart, so hes showing his respect by playing one of his solo, if it were me, id be honored to have one of my solos being played.

  • What's even funnier is that his cover is nowhere near as good or energetic as Peart is. Mike is not the best drummer in the world as some would say, he is good though.

  • @BigEd0601, it's not his solo. It's Neil Pearts Solo.

  • freakin awsome!

  • sayang, akala ko magdudrum solo si Portnoy.

  • amazing :D

  • Well I might be in the minority but I think that it's great to see a group of accomplished musicians going out and playing their favorite songs by other bands and this a pretty fucking accomplished group of musicians. If they want to cover The Who, The beatles, Rush or anyone else I'm there with bells on.

  • Did not like the sound of that bass at all. Zero punch, Blahhhh

  • @truenewyorker101 it sounds exactly like the studio bass track. are you stupid or are you deaf?

  • @GetFuckingAngry

Are you deaf? Unlike Geddy's tone on YYZ, Malone's tone has no bite and no aggressiveness. Moreover, Malone's playing is sloppy.

  • @Chriskkboongg You do realize Malone is playing on a fretless correct? Jesus you know nothing... let me explain. On a fretless, you are naturally going to not be as edgy and as aggressive as a fretted instrument, you trade those qualities for singing quality to the instrument, which Malone has a achieved many times in his recordings. Learn your shit before you talk. Geddy is one of the greatest bass players to live, and I feel the same way with malone.

  • @Chriskkboongg Dude...Malone plays this as good as Geddy. No where in the song is he in the slightest bit sloppy or out of tune on his FRETLESS bass. Do you have any idea how hard that is to pull off on a song of this difficulty ? I don't think you do.

  • @xAtlas1992x he still didn't write

  • @xAtlas1992x Pause at 1:20, there are frets.

  • if that was an honest tribute to rush, then good job. but since this band has based it's existance on being a cover band, not so... good musicians? yea, i suppose, but make your own music dudes. i'm not a hater, just not impressed.

  • @hightech62

Paul Gilbert - Racer X, Mr Big and Paul Gilbert

Mike Portnoy - Dream Theather, Avenged Sevenfold

    Sean Malone- Cynic, Gordian Knot

    Does that tells you something?

  • @hightech62 they've recorded over 11 albums ever since 1989. impressed yet?

  • is clear that rush is better but this was actually really cool, haha spirit of the radio at the end

  • lee, lifson and peart are the best

  • @poubel30 I love them as well but there is no comparison between paul gilbert and lifeson . Everytime I've seen him live he seems to make some annoying mistakes. I think this version would have been better with a better, more forward bass tone (geddy should be in this band =P) and less portnoy showing off =P

  • FUCKING SICK! O.o

  • its seems it just like mike portnoy drum solo XD

  • Now, I can die happy

  • lol at Mike doing Peart's solo note for note. He must have been imagining he was in front of 30'000 Rush fans in an arena in 1981. Then he see's the 13 nerds who've shown up and reality dawns

  • Look at all of you people watching Portnoy on the drums on YouTube and then making fun of his drumming ability.

Yes we thank God everyday for sending us Rush but I tell you he's not too bad either.

  • the guitarist is not on the same level as lifeson...

  • @concars1234 Indeed, lol much better infact... but thats my opinion

    You dont know paul gilbert?

  • @concars1234 Oh god...

  • you guys arent paying portnoy as much credit as he deserves, fuckin soft

  • 2:19 Mike Portnoy's impression of Buddy Rich

  • You get Tama to build you a Peart replica kit! Or a Bonham,Moon,Ringo Kit.

Only Crazy Mike is this busy. It is his Spirit!

  • OMG! what the hell I just had saw????

  • one of the best drummers-musicians that God put on earth to illuminate the world of music....yes, he imitates their idols, but constantly innovates...future generations to take good note of it... up the drummers!!!!

  • no more bass..PLEASE!?

  • Mike is a beast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah the reason why there is so much snare is cause he's copying the YYZ\drum solo from exit stage left

  • 2:19 - 3:26 We get it Portnoy, you have a snare drum.

  • @r4pt0rP5K @r4pt0rP5K Ever watch John Bonham? He does it, too. And at least he's incorporating cool rhythms.

  • @kashby42 A drummer can use all the different rhythms they want, but for an unnecessarily placed and lengthy solo like that, with all of the drums that he has setup, it's boring to sit around for a minute to hears something besides an accented snare roll.

  • @r4pt0rP5K Go listen to Neil's drum solo on YYZ on the "Exit Stage Left" record. He's trying to play that solo.

  • @ghostridercht2012 I'd put the exact same comment on there too.

  • @r4pt0rP5K I think that was the point of the section. Listen to your Neil Peart solos. He always has a snare drum-driven section.

  • @r4pt0rP5K obviously you haven;t heard the real solo dumb fuck

  • @r4pt0rP5K HA!

  • @r4pt0rP5K you play better than portnoy, don't you?

  • @nikitofin I hit more than one drum when I play.

  • @r4pt0rP5K Have you actually listened to YYZ on the Exit.. Stage Left recording? It appears you haven't because this rendition is very true to the original concert release. Or is it you also believe that Neil Peart is lacking in talent as a drummer? If you believe both these icons are so lacking in talent I feel sorry for the person that has to live up to your expectations.

  • @skotia1968 I have seen it, and I feel really sorry for the person that's actually entertained by hearing a snare roll for over a minute.

  • @r4pt0rP5K I can't take you seriously - you saw when he played that entire monstrosity of a kit right?

  • @metalmike83 Yep, I also saw when he hit one (and only one) for over a full minute

  • @r4pt0rP5K Because this is a YYZ solo and that's exactly what Peart did/does during his solos. He's paying tribute to Neil Peart. FYI, that's also why he did the cowbell thing. Also, Neil got the inspiration to play that way from Buddy Rich, and in turn he influenced Mike Portnoy to play that way. It may be extended here but that's only because Mike wanted to pay tribute to one of this all-time favourites. That said, if you can play the snare that well, I'd like to see it.

  • @metalmike83 Well, you just named off 3 drummers that played the same boring thing. -golf clap-

  • @r4pt0rP5K dude that was comic genuis.i was thinking is this a snare solo.dude is way better than me ,but after 3 or 4 minutes on the snare .....move on,dang.

  • @r4pt0rP5K it actually goes even longer that and turns into a drum solo XD

  • @r4pt0rP5K It's not portnoy's problem you don't know good drumming when you hear it. Talentless hacks like you never can appreciate true art and skill.

Enjoy this week's episode of Jersey Shore

  • @jedispy Cool story bro, tell it again.

  • @r4pt0rP5K Still the best comment on Youtube

  • @r4pt0rP5K the solo is supposed to be a snare drum solo lol

  • @r4pt0rP5K i really don't like portnoy but he did that because it was in peart's actual solo.

  • Bass is way too loud in the mix....

  • Of course its awesome! Paul Gilbert and Mike Portnoy in the same band!! Duuuuude

  • @lskynyrd23 along with Yellow Matter Custard and Hammer of the Gods they did together.

  • Portnoy is one of the most accomplished drummers in the hall of fame. He can do what he wants at this point.

  • I think Mike Portnoy is an excellent drummer! I do hate the fact that this is a shameless borrow of YYZ from the Exit Stage Left album by Rush. Mike is big on inspirations but this might just be a bit to far. I mean he's got the drum kit duplicated completely. Rush is a band that is known for creativity and sort of going outside the box. Copying them is not really creating what they stand for.

  • @JGriff828 They're doing a Rush tribute. Copying is the whole point.

  • @JGriff828 It was a cover... It's not like he is calling this his own song

  • darn, only half the drumkit, oh well, good work

  • So quiet bass... Disrespect to Geddy.

  • @SgtZaqq

    And it sounds wrong!

  • I don't love any of the bands these guys are from but I do think Mike Portnoy is a bad ass drummer and I admire any famous musician who doesn't lose their head and still loves the music they grew up on. Rush is one of my favorites and this song is awesome! Keep rockin!

  • Holy Fuck!!!

  • I'm 40, I have a decent drumkit, but I still have wet dreams about THIS kit :))

  • Belleza!

  • YYZ on a fretless bass! I'm dreaming :P

  • Are those just loose pedals on the floor in front of Paul? I almost certainly thought he had them on a board of some sort.... GREAT cover of a Prog anthem.

8:34.... that almost sounds like Paul doing green tinted 60's Mind intro.

  • @MuvoTX He does do Green tinted

  • I bet Gilbert and Malone were like "Hey you wanna go grab a smoke? This could take awhile" during Portnoy's solo.

  • Most bad ass drum solo and great job on nightmare

  • mike portnoy great drummer, but not fit to lace neil peart's boot's he just does not have the same feel, just what i think i could be wrong!!!!

  • This just shows how amazing Neil Peart's solo on Exit Stage Left is. Even this guy can't play it well.

  • Mike Portnoy doing what he does best... playing other people's music.

  • @ruinawish FANTASTIC COMMENT, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • @ruinawish you sound a litttttttttle bit like a bitter DT fan. I'm not happy he left the band either, but don't be mad because he wanted to go do other things. And at least give him a bit of credit for honoring his idol with an absolutely amazing cover

  • @ruinawish Because other people are incapable to play mike's music

  • @ruinawish Thats the point of a "cover song", playing other peoples music...

  • @ruinawish He's not good at playing his own music? He did write in DT you know.

  • Comment removed

  • Bull shit! That's an amazing version. MP is better then NP unfortunately my friend.

  • 6:43 FTW

  • hahaha this is paul gilberts idea of "clean non dist. music" so he uses a hollow body... lol

  • I've always wondered why people say about rush: "It's amazing how 3 guys can get such a big sound!" this cover makes it pretty obvious. It feels like something is missing in this cover.

  • @Chr1sda4 Taurus bass pedals, keyboard and talent. Drum solos are boring. My kid neighbor can do as well on drums, maybe better. All the same. Just listen to RUSH!!!

  • @JimmyLeeVanDePutte yes because one of the worlds best guitar players, and one of the worlds best drummers are devoid of talent. get the fuck out you stupid piece of shit.

  • @JimmyLeeVanDePutte have you even seen Paul gilbert and mike portnoy's respective bands? Paul gilberts solo suff and his stuff with racer X is beyond amazing, and POrtnoy aside from when he was in Dream theater has had a crap ton of side projects you can look up.

  • malone is a beast

  • This is like the weak cover. I guess I'm used to the live version with screaming fans

  • @Americant47

Mike himself has said that his solo skills aren't the best

But for a guy who's solos aren't the best... they're not dusty. I still can't do that.

    ;)

  • Nice!! lol

  • Heard some Xanadu in there!!

  • if i had that drum set id amuse myself for days. although everyone else would get extremely annoyed

  • umm.... needs more cowbell???

  • @boweyang How dare you, sir!

  • @phmsin I second that remark.

  • Cynic, Racer X, and Dream Theater members all in one band. My head just exploded.

  • Where was this performance?

  • gotta love mike, fantastic player and is awesome that they paid tribute as close as they could, mike having a niel type set up and playing a neil type solo and gilbert with his hollowbody and marshalls... if only malone would have been playing a rickenbaker or a fender jazz through an orange...
