Great job! Thanks for putting this up! I think that this was one of the first records that I ever bought...the 45 back when I was about 10 or 11. I'm pretty sure that they were on Capital Records, might be wrong though. Little did we all know back then about the GREAT Carole King and David Goffin songwriting team and the fact that King played that scintillating piano riff on the record.
There was a three-year period in Rock history (Jan 1, 1962 to Dec 31, 1964) that gave us so many singable and danceable tunes. This one is near the top of the list of my personal favorites. So many great memories.
Why lament ????? We have handphones nowadays , just sing along with this song and upload . Hong Kong youngsters have been composing songs and uploading since the launch of Youtube in 2005 .
Luv that sax break (1:37)! Anyone know who did it?
Songwriters Carole King & Gerry Goffin had Little Eva (The Loco-Motion) sing this for them first. But her version w/ them just didn’t click, so it was not released. But that session’s wow piano work by Carol stayed, on this version by The Chiffons - tho w/o Carol's vocal work. From May 1963. The Chiffons: Patricia Bennett Judy Craig, Barbara Lee & Sylvia Peterson
Carol King later on has it as her fine hit, too, summer 1980 :I:
@greaserman44 Well, this is the original so the other versions you might have heard are probably re-recordings (which many groups did because they did not have the rights to the original and could not release that version themselves)
I was 17 when this song was released ...absolutely great song, it was a big hit in NYC as well as the rest of the country.
in 1963 this song was a hit and still playing on the speakers run thru the downtown business district any one remeber Jimmy Clanton as a DJ? Same town I grew up in.
I love this song!!! I hate new music. I'm surely the only 14-year-old on the planet who is in love with the 60's and can't stand Rihanna, but I don't care! :)
@EmilyARTS : You, my dear, know great music when you hear it. It doesn't matter what year, or decade, or era: good music is good music. It just so happens that your love of '60s music mirrors my own. I was a kid during the '60s, and what an era it was. The so-called 'girl groups' were an integral part of what made the music so great: The Chiffons, Shirelles, Ronettes, Crystals, Marvelettes, Vandellas, Chantels, Shangri-las, Blue-Bells (with Patti LaBell!), Murmaids, Royalettes, ....
@mothxal Of course! I love supporting independent and lesser known music, I am in love with many local/obscure artists :D I was referring to how weird it is how popular taste has gone down in quality. I hope to bring better artists to light to hopefully raise the majority's standard.
Winter was very cold in 1963,and there wasn't anything to do outdoors on the farm .Our help in the household had her hair up,suddenly she shook it loose (oh! it was so very long, over her hips) and teached me how to do the twist
What radio sounded like in the spring of 1963. With all of their hits, The Chiffons still seem seriously under-rated to me. Judy Craig's lead vocal here is a pop masterpiece. It is getting dangerously close to half a century since this song came out, and never for a moment has its exuberance sounded dated. Thank you for posting this.
but he didn't :-(
