Great video, I have been working Gateshead as a Taxi Driver now for the last 7 years, and before that I was working on local council for 5 years. So this takes me back to 1998, I have heard lots about Gateshead Festival but sadly I never lived here then. This is the 1st time I have seen anything in video and now I know what it looked like. I would have enjoyed that, it looked great. Ah well thanks for the video.
i went there in 1991 with the school was on songs of praise skipping around the festival with alan titchmarsh. would love to see that vid again but think its lost forever boohoo
Excellent video, it's amazing to think anyone had a camcorder back in 1990. Trev (or anyone), do you by chance happen to have any footage or photos of the St. Cuthbert's Village area just up the road?
I went to the garden festival on a school trip. I was only 6 but i still remember it! Great video, helped bring back even more memories of it :) Can't believe it was 20 years ago.....god i feel old!
I think Eslington is the only part of the festival site that is still parkland. Mainly football pitches. I'd love to walk around it and see what used to be there.
Such a shame when you look at the area now. The area in my view would have been a great park - which incidentally came fully landscaped after the festival finished. It was left to rot for years after. Instead the developers/planning officials couldnt resist the 'luxury flat' fetish that has been going around for the last 10 years. What a shame the land wasnt saved.
Thanks for the comment 4 days ago (just got round to checking the inbox today). What a difference a bit of planning, editing, (and tripod), makes. Unfortunately I tend not to use one so much these days, 19 years later!
re: your comment about people not having camcorders and filming the Gateshead Garden Festival, I did that and have uplifted the first of several films based on the transports used there.

Excellent - the only shame is that more people have not seen it.

I loved working at the N.G.F. Almost 20 years ago but seems just like yesterday.

The best piece of documentary I've had the pleasure to see about the Gateshead Garden Festival.
Excellent work.

Wow! Thanks for the kind comments. Wish I'd had a digital camcorder then (I don't think they had been invented yet!)

Very nice, particularly enjoyed the "All manner of cacti were on offer" narration. :-)
