Certainly, which I believe is one of those things that makes learning interesting. Usually these kind of things seems odd to you at first, but as you begin to understand the language and culture more, you can relate and interpret the reasons behind these differences that you speak of.

Yup. I met two hot and friendly girls at the train station in Yokohama. I wanted to borrow their cell phone because mine didn´t work and I couldn´t find a pay phone. They only understood the word call and then they said bye. When I met a group of girls or both guys and girls at a train station only like one of them could speak English. One time when I went to a restaurant and when I went to an Internet cafe by myself they didn´t know any English.

Certainly, which I believe is one of those things that makes learning interesting. Usually these kind of things seems odd to you at first, but as you begin to understand the language and culture more, you can relate and interpret the reasons behind these differences that you speak of.

I've been seeing a lot of comments about being slapped, even with the japanese lack or sarcasm, you would have to work hard to get slapped. ive seen some dumb dudes try stuff and not get slapped. not to mention girls getting groped on trains and surrounding people not saying a word about it. I have japanese friends who were born out of japan who dont speak japanese on the level i do, and they are japanese... i have friends who arent japanese who read and write kanji better than japanese people born in japan. its an insanely indepth language and GBM speaks it great. plus dialects play a huge role...

I was a high school exchange student in Tochigi and picking up chicks is really looked down upon.

nanpa just means hit on or pick up... its not a bad word. japan was closed off from the rest of the world for a long time, they still arent used to having foreign things especially people around. plus look into their mythology and ancient beliefs, they believed that they were the people closest to gods in this world.

Yup. I met two hot and friendly girls at the train station in Yokohama. I wanted to borrow their cell phone because mine didn´t work and I couldn´t find a pay phone. They only understood the word call and then they said bye. When I met a group of girls or both guys and girls at a train station only like one of them could speak English. One time when I went to a restaurant and when I went to an Internet cafe by myself they didn´t know any English.

Eyecontact seemed to be the most easy thing possible there. To the extent of being stared at even when staring back. I often shoved it off as being looked at for being a westerner, only occasionally they smiled at me, other times it was just staring.
