I have this laptop and it is developing a nasty failure, it struggles to read data of the drive, it is still bootable for now so i managed to get my data off, but the SMART status still says the drive is "good" when Hitachi's own utility has written it off as dead! Never again Hitachi!
i know its a little too late but in case you haven't trashed or smashed it yet, try opening it and power on via some usb to 2,5" ide converter. put your finger on to the center point of platter motor and slow it down a little. try not to get dust into it :)
50% chance that the head clicking will stop and it will read data...
I'm getting the exact same noise and the messages on my Acer laptop :-(
By any chance, did you get to recover it?
Strange thing is just before my disk crashed, I got a error message on the screen saying something related to a VC++ library and then my system froze and when I restarted....boom!
I read around about that sound, it's not exactly a head crash(worst possible Hard Disk Death.), carves your platter like how old vcd players used to eat VCDs.
That sound and mine is a "bad head" from what I read. wherein the arm that reads data is broke and stuck. w/c makes the clicking sound.
There's a high chance you could've still recovered your data thru a DataRecov Firm/company.
Amazing. exactly like mine! Holy smokes man. 40 gb Travelstar too. mine started clicking last nov. 5th. (talk about V for vendetta.)
I was just browsing files waiting for the folder thumbnail to load and it hanged and started clicking just like that! shit... I feel wrecked now for not having back up...
I had a 40 gig travelstar with music photos etc, it started clicking yesterday, and now im getting ready to bury it..any advice on recovering the data! lots of photo memories!!
