This was when Mad TV was at it's best - the mid to late 90's. Greater comedy, better writing and acting - Debra Wilson, Nicole Sullivan, Artie Lang, etc. The first 5 seasons were excellent. At this time, MJ had changed from black (in the 80's) to white, but his music wasn't doing very well and he was producing fewer music videos. Although its seems in bad taste now, when this was on TV it was typical, common MJ jokes, same with many other singers like Madonna or Michael Bolton.
