I am a natural Finnish speaker and I understand 15% of what this is about. I would have to have it translittered to understand. Or played 20 times over.
I love Varttina. Sometimes they are a full band fronted by 3 women. Sort of like the Finnish Dixie Chicks...at least as good. Older videos seem to be traditional...and some times they are a capella like this. Then there is Aijo!! That one is chilling. (Finnish Voodoo?) My good friend in Finland doesn't like them at all. I have no idea why. I recognize just 1 word in this song Musta. No, it doesn't mean that...it means black. (doesn't it?)
@dweml258 I would venture to say that Värttinä is probably a wee bit more popular in Finland than the Dixie Chicks are in the U.S. I'm not sure there is actually a U.S. equivalent to Värttinä when you consider their large volume of work across their 30+ year history.
@jimkuemmerle thank you for that information - love Sari!!! First, the language seems fun to sing and I enjoy those who "get into" the singing and she certainly does that - I also watched Pihi neito (?) and she, colloquially speaking, ROCKS!!!!
@laelamarie1 I'm not jim, but - yeas they are sisters. Their mother was the primus motor of the original form of the band (school kids). Then later Sari (being the oldest) took the lead - as you can really see here ;)
Sari left at the of '96 for her other projects - and AFAIK the band has been lead on more 'democratic' way since.

@pkrzysztofek Do you got fiancés ? Suitors on the doorsteps? Does the village compete to propose you? Suitors from these lands? Have you thought over, prepared. A great and handsome fiancé? Engagement silks on the closet? A ring is put into your finger! There you have a handsome fiancé, a dalring for eternity. Kiss your fiancé. Get close to him without permission. You must not be wound up, snap without a reason. Remember: with a gentle mind, peace remains in the heart, fiancés heart throbs
@talvikki81 thank you for the information for those of us who can't speak Finnish - the group I saw as Varttina are not the women (excepting one) here. Who are these women, do you know? I love clear voice
@laelamarie1 Hi - 'ralphyboy25' directed me to your question. This is the early 90's lineup of the group - 'jimkuemmerle' gave the names of the singers in his comment. They started as a school kid band in the mid 80's - and continued in a reduced and slightly altered form as the 'prof Värttinä' in the beginning of the 90's.
There has been continuous line up changes during the years, so as of now Mari is the only original member - despite that, IMO their quality has always stayed extremely high.
@EneriGiilaan (bless ralphyboy25) I appreciate very much the information. I really do read through the comments as I learn most there; some of the videos of the group have been in another language. Excellent singing - gives me an entirely new thought of the Finnish people...thanks again.!
Not only are these women amazingly pretty but their voices are some of the most amazing I've only ever rarely heard! This is an absolutely amazing song!
Ah, that's wonderful. I saw them in Bloomington, Indiana, probably a couple years after this was shot, but it's the same four singers, and I can remember they did this song. Their show was a lot of fun, it's nice to see they've stuck around.
Their wry twist on the lyrics point out many differences in how farms used to operate and the way they're run now: ponies vs. tractors (but - both are smelly), ancient vs. modern furrow depths (you wouldn't think that 2" would make much difference), and the fact that global warming has extended their growing season - at 1:46 the contralto even says, "Fresh tomatos in October..? Thats just crazy!"
This wonderful Finnish folk song comes from the Norse tradition of 'Eereiar Nuuai', or 'Socks or No Socks, My Feet Are Always Cold'. The ladies have updated the words to reflect contemporary Finnish farming techniques - these days, only a fool would plow using spotted drow ponies!

Best vocal group since the Beach Boys. Saw them in 97 at
Moritzbastei Leipzig. This here was the best line-up ever.
Mari, you are beautiful.

@laelamarie1 They sometimes include a Setu-language intro to 'Pihi Neito' - did you perhaps mean that?
As far as I know they otherwise utilize only dialectical and/or old language forms of Finnish.

That was lovely! Finnish sure sounds enchanting and mysterious.when you sing it.
