There was no parry, as you can hear the referee says "Counter Attack" but the "Riposte" rule applies to this perfectly.
After your opponent misses his first attack you have the Right Of Way to counter attack no matter where the opponent is.. As we clearly see, OTA missed his first attack way before they passed each other, so Kleibrink had all the priority to Counter Attack/Riposte. But there was no parry.
after you parry you are allowed one riposte, no matter where the other fencer is, even if it is after the halt. kind of counter intuitive right? this sort of thing almost never happens in sabre, but if you parry and they sprint past you and you have to do a lunge completely backwards it will still count as your touch
@sharadeth i do not think it did, but if you take a parry you get one riposte no matter where the other person is, i once saw an epee fencer take a parry, turn around, and do a full advance lunge to hit the person. one action so he got the touch
@EnduringDusk it says that if the fencer start to riposte after the opponet passed him, its a riposte touche but he cant start to riposte after his opponent is behind him
did he really have to flick or was it a habit, from the angle of ota's back and the riht shoulder turning, a straight touch would have givn greater reach, but with kleibrinks arm pull back from the preceeding parry 4, the flick would be the shortest route the point had to travel.
great touch! once ota was past he really wasnt trying to defend, but the fact that kleibrink stayed focused and reacted quickly is how he pulled this one off.
Foil is the only type of fencing i can appreciate

You are allowed one riposte after the parry no matter where the other fencer is even if they have passed you as long as the riposte is immediate

unfortunately i believe they had already passed shoulders when the touch was scored (which is supposed to stop the action) but otherwise ausome touch

is the riposte after passing only valid in FIE tourneys? or does the U.S.F.A rules allow one riposte after passing ?

all tournaments, usfa included

Thanks, I can argue that one next time with a director if they try to throw it out.

@CyrusofChaos I thought the riposte was valid only if the action was started before they passed each other

@CyrusofChaos Epee? how is epee relevant to parries
yihd 1 year ago
@yihd the rule is the same for all three weapons, i was just giving an example of a very extreme case that just happened to occur in epee

@CyrusofChaos Alright

@CyrusofChaos Is there a place in the rulebook that specifies this? I can't seem to find it.

@gamercds but the director says that he started the riposte before yuki passed so the touch is valid
