No. What you are referring to as a 'proper' aerial is a gymnastics aerial, the side to side aerial that is used here is more common in martial arts, and thus martial arts tricking. Both are aerials, neither is more valid than the other.

This tutorial was such a huge help! I've been watching it for a few days, and today had a little free time to go out a try an aerial for the first time. I followed the technique that Taegashi describes in this video to the tee, and lo and behold, I can do aerials now! I was really surprised I was able to get them on the first day and only after a few tries. I even did the best aerial of the day at work today in front of a not so bad looking female co-worker who cheered for me afterwards, hahaha.
